Malcolm Blight blasts Richmond life membership decision (5AA)

Adelaide great Blight blasts Richmond life membership decision

Andrew Slevison
Tue, 6th Feb 2018

Malcolm Blight has made it very clear he does not agree with the Richmond Football Club.

The Tigers last week awarded life membership to the 2017 premiership team but Adelaide Crows legend Blight feels it is far too premature for some of these players to be handed such a prestigious accolade.

“The 22 that played were made life members,” he said on Sportsday SA.

“Now, every club can do what they like but when a player gets a life membership for five games…

“I’ve got to quiz who made that decision and why would that decision be made?

“You are already a premiership player, you are already one of the very specials in the game.

“(I find it disrespectful) to a guy who has been there eight years, played 120 games and just missed out on playing.

“What’s he done? He’s done plenty.”

Kane Cornes then added: “The thing for me is you are always going to be a premiership player, that is special in itself.

“(You) do not automatically get life membership because you’re a premiership player.

“Port Adelaide it is 10 years of service, the Adelaide Footy Club is something similar.”

I agree with Blight, in the emotion after the GF win a decision was made to award life membership to all premiership players.

This decision diminishes the life membership award at our club.

If Broad had been charged by the police, was found guilty and Richmond cut him lose we would have had given life membership to a player who only played a handful of games.

totally disagree, as Benny Gale said the most important thing a footy club can do is win flags and we should honour those that help achieve that goal

^^

I'm fine with it. And the decision was made more in regards to the blokes that played 80-90 games in the 60s and 70s and won flags but don't have Life membership. While plodders that acquired 100 during our dark days of the 80s-90s-00's got it.

I also disagree with Blight.

The Broad example is poor too IMHO.

If Broad had played 150 games and had been awarded life membership that way and then was arrested by the police, the same result would have occurred. You just have to look at Carlton and their most famous player in John Nicholls who served a 3 month jail term after being found guilty of embezzlement and larceny. He is a life member and an ex con. The two are mutually exclusive.

The ultimate goal of a player and club is to win a flag. Anyone who contributes to that ultimate achievement becomes an instant hero in the fans eyes. The premiership players certainly don't agree with Blight. They have a special bond and meet year after year for the rest of their lives and celebrate their achievement.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Who cares what he says, wasted a lot of time and money stuffing St Kilda over.
When we win the flag this year any dual players will get double life membership.

Not to mention an AFL legend  :whistle

Not sure if people realise that weekend prison release in Victoria was introduced because of Nicholls. Lib PM (Menzies) and Vic Premier (Bolte) both staunch blue supporters cooked up the law so Big Nic could play footy on weekends... that's how the story goes  ;) ;D

I agree with Blight, in the emotion after the GF win a decision was made to award life membership to all premiership players.

This was not a decision made in haste after the game.  The decision to make all premiership players Life Members was made and signed off by the Board (and I think members) in early 2017.  It just so happens that 6 months later we have 22 additional premiership players for the club.

This decision was made by RFC for the RFC.  It has nothing to do with Blight, Cornes or whoever chooses to question the decision.  Their clubs can make decisions for their club and we will do the same, thanks.

It's our club Blighty. Not yours. You do not get an opinion on this.

 :nope

Members voted on it at the lat AGM, last December 2017.

Board put it forward just after the GF
