----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lights out as Seagulls eclipse VFL Tigers

At the Swinburne Centre, under lights, for the most part, Williamstown won through to a preliminary final by 25 points, while Richmond VFL will have to cash-in its double chance.

The lights went out with 4:47 left to go in the third quarter, as the Seagulls held sway by 19 points.

After a substantial break in play, the lights fired back up and play resumed at the start of the final term.

Following the bizarre turn of events, Williamstown held-off a spirited Tiger stuff, eventually prevailing, 11.14 (80) to 8.7 (55).

In their previous two meetings in 2018, Williamstown has had Richmond’s measure and in their most recent encounter, the Seagulls toppled the Tigers by 44 points.

Richmond was determined to not let history repeat itself and it started the game in fine fashion.

The Tigers hunted the opposition from the get-go and brought its trademark pressure and set about stifling the Seagulls and grinding them into submission.

Returning from injury, Dan Butler suited up at VFL level for the first time since 2016 and made his presence felt instantly.

Butler ignited the Tiger Army with a classy goal to open proceedings.

The premiership Tiger played most of the opening half, before being managed after halftime with an eye to Thursday night’s AFL qualifying final.

Williamstown has an uncanny knack of answering back with a goal, and halting momentum, and it did just that.

The opening term was an arm-wrestle with both sides having their fair share of momentum, without capitalising.

Richmond was able to repeatedly pump the ball inside-50, but simply struggled to capitalise.

Corey Ellis got the Tigers’ second major on the board after chopping off an errant Seagulls’ kick-in and slotting the set-shot from beyond the arc.

The Seagulls would hit back, and the Tigers held a slender lead of two points at quarter-time.

Noah Balta has enjoyed a promising debut season at Tigerland and showed that he may be a finals wildcard judging by his sterling second quarter performance.

Balta’s as versatile as a Swiss army knife, and it was his work up forward and through the midfield that really impressed in the second term.

After out-pointing his opponent at the top of the goal-square, Balta went back and slotted a very important goal, handing the Tigers a seven-point lead.

Jake Aarts was the happy recipient of a stuff before the restart, and suddenly Richmond’s lead was pushed out to 13 points.

Unfortunately, Williamstown kicked in gear and slotted back-to-back goals to bring the margin back to a point before Tyson Stengle provided the highlight of the night.

Stengle soared from three deep and dragged down a hanger.

He coolly went back and slotted the goal, before the Lachy Schultz’s duo of majors handed the visitors a seven-point halftime lead.

Williamstown burst of the blocks in the second half, skating to a 19-point lead.

Callum Moore gave the Tiger faithful something to cheer about after he arrested the ball from congestion, snapping truly.

However, as it did all night, Williamstown hit back and then—the lights went out.

Play was halted, players, coaches and officials looked bewildered and eventually three-quarter time was called.

The time lost was added to the final term, where Richmond fought valiantly and got back into the contest.

Jacob Ballard dragged the margin back to within three goals and injected some hope into the hosts.

It was all to no avail, as Williamstown held firm and sealed a preliminary final spot and with it a week off to rest, recuperate and study its pending opponent.

Oleg Markov also returned from injury, playing three quarters before sitting out the final term.

Markov and Butler got through the game unscathed and will be good to go next week at either level.

Luckless Tiger defender, Dan Coffield injured his knee in the first five minutes of the game and took no further part.

Ballard hasn’t hit one target by hand all game.  :banghead

He’s been really dissapointing tonight.

You seem surprised?

What he has dished up tonight is what I see everytime I watch our VFL side.

Correct. Just a VFL player at best.

Held over for the QF just in case they are needed to play

Thinking about last night further this morning, yes we were bad but it could work out for us as it gives players the opportunity to bat up again next week. Should Garth, Lloyd Butler not play Thursday night they will be better for a hit out during the weekend rather than another week off. Willy are a very good team but with the best young key defender at VFL level not playing and one of the best mids not playing, next time we could get them. Markov was good last night and will only get better next week...

It is to our AFL team's benefit that our VFL team plays next week. Gives Butler a full game next week if he doesn't play Thursday night as expected. Had we won last night then Butler wouldn't play for another fortnight.

Balme urges AFL and VFL to 'talk' on scheduling

MORE communication between the AFL and VFL would help clubs field their best team for finals, Richmond football manager Neil Balme says.

The Tigers' reserves played on Saturday night at Punt Road while the senior side takes to the field just five days later, on Thursday at the MCG, against Hawthorn for a qualifying final.

Having so little time between games meant small forward Sam Lloyd and defender Ryan Garthwaite didn't take part in the VFL clash, which the Tigers lost to Williamstown.

"We thought they were very much the next players in line in the chop-up. For them to play two games in five days in a serious final is probably pretty hard to do," Balme told Channel Seven on Saturday.

"I just wish the AFL and the VFL would talk to each other. It might make it a bit easier for us."

Dan Butler seems unlikely to earn a recall after returning from ankle syndesmosis surgery in his first hit-out since Richmond's round 16 victory over Adelaide.

He picked up just three disposals and slotted a goal, but emerged unscathed.

Oleg Markov also came back from a knee issue.

"The draw's pretty tough for them. We've got to play on Thursday, after a Saturday game, which makes it pretty tough," Balme said.

"Dan was good. He hasn't played for a fair while. I thought he was OK, particularly early. We'll see what happens."

Meanwhile, Virgin Australia All Australian squad member Kane Lambert is set to face the Hawks.

"We're pretty happy with the way he's gone. He's only missed a couple of games so he didn't really need to play one. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get up," Balme said.

Lambert, 26, missed the final two matches of the home and away season.

Small forward Dan Butler emerged unscathed in his return from ankle surgery as Richmond lost its qualifying final to Williamstown by 25 points at Punt Road. He had only three disposals and kicked a goal.

Oleg Markov (15 disposals) also made a comeback, lining up after a knee issue kept him out.

However, neither is unlikely to line up in the AFL side's qualifying final against Hawthorn.

"We've got to play on Thursday, after a Saturday game, which makes it pretty tough," football boss Neil Balme told Channel Seven.

"Dan was good. He hasn't played for a fair while. I thought he was OK, particularly early. We'll see what happens."

Sam Lloyd and Ryan Garthwaite were left out of the match.

"We thought they were very much the next players in line in the chop-up," Balme said.

"For them to play two games in five days in a serious final is probably pretty hard to do.

"I just wish the AFL and the VFL would talk to each other. It might make it a bit easier for us."

Onballer Anthony Miles collected 25 disposals while Corey Ellis finished with 22 and a goal.

Lost because:

- Stengle had his worst game for the year.

- Ballard & Morris were liabilties.

- Menadue was weak as pee.

- Soldo is useless.

-VFL players all had shockers

- No Garthwaite.

- Balta played at the wrong end.

- depth is not as great as we think particularly in the midfiekd and the unsettled line-up has lost form.

- Managed minutes for Butler.

 - Umpires.

-Williamstown were cleaner and made better decisions.

On an unrelated side note;:

Willy supporters have always been the biggest bunch of gobshytes & flogs in the comp. and proved it yet again last night. :shh

Why do you think CCJ should be delisted?

Did I say that? I don’t remember saying this.

From what I’ve seen (which isn’t much) I don’t think much of him but that said he looked better in ruck than soldo. Balta on the other hand looks good.

Bit of a reality check our KP players need time all shown alot this year Balta ,Miller and CCJ all first year players judge them after 3 preseasons.I agree we need midfield depth this draft, but we sure had alot of quality missing to.Get rid of dead wood like Miles and Ellis.
