The Hardwick drama has not been the only off-field issue at Richmond, with young gun Sydney Stack still stranded in Western Australia despite being released from prison having breached COVID-19 rules in WA.

Cotchin was however upbeat about Stack’s future at Punt Road, although he did not know when Stack would be back in Victoria.

“Stacky’s fundamentally an incredible person. He’s obviously had a couple of mishaps. He’s young, he’s still learning, he actually reached out last week to have a conversation about a few little things that he can change, which we’ll tee up over the next week or so,” Cotchin said.

Stack remains stranded in Western Australia as he awaits sentencing over a breach of the state’s quarantine rules. O’Neal said the Tigers were standing by the young defender.

“It’s unfortunate that he can’t get back to Melbourne but at the same time he’s getting good advice over there and we’re in constant contact and we’re anxious to have him back here and back down at Punt Road and get him down to training again, and I know he’s anxious to have that happen too.” - Peggy O'Neal.

Tigers trim costs to pay Stack fine as return nears

Richmond hopes to welcome back Sydney Stack soon with the Tigers working out a cost-cutting plan to absorb his $100,000 fine and save jobs.

Richmond pledges to help Sydney Stack as return to club nears

HeraldSun
14 March 2021

Richmond has shaved costs to avoid huge job losses at Punt Road as a result of the COVID-19 hit season, absorbing some of Sydney Stack’s huge fine in its football cap.

Richmond is hopeful Sydney Stack could be back at Punt Road within weeks as it absorbs the damage of his $100,000 fine within the club’s football department cap.

Stack is in a much better place than when he was released from prison for a West Australian COVID breach as he awaits a March 25 court date for that offence.

The talented indigenous player is living with his auntie in Northam and attempting to rededicate himself to his AFL career.

He is not only getting a high level of support from Richmond on a fitness program, he is also accessing the type of counselling and welfare he needs to work on his issues away from football.

Stack was rocked by a family bereavement pre-Christmas and then returned home to West Australia where he committed a second COVID breach after his initial Queensland AFL infraction.

But when he was bailed after serving three weeks in jail the Supreme Court judge suggested he was unlikely to serve more jail time even if given a conviction.

The Tigers are desperate to get him back among their support structures, with Stack able to play practice games and VFL despite his AFL ban that runs until Round 5.

The Tigers and Stack’s management are determined to respect the court process but there is a hope with borders to soon be opened up he could be back in Melbourne soon after that court case.

Richmond AFL player Sydney Stack is due to learn his penalty for breaching Western Australia's strict COVID-19 quarantine laws.

Stack has pleaded guilty to one count of failing to comply with a direction.

If Stack avoids jail time, he could rejoin his Richmond teammates within days.

Stack still has to serve four more matches of his AFL ban, but it's expected he will be eligible to play second-tier games during that period.

AFL star Sydney Stack fined for COVID-19 quarantine breach in Perth

Stack was charged with failing to comply with a direction, and on Thursday faced a sentencing hearing in Perth Magistrates Court.

His lawyer Tom Percy said Stack had already spent 21 “difficult” days in custody over Christmas before he was granted bail.

Mr Percy said a Richmond football club representative was in court to support Stack, as well as Stack’s manager and girlfriend.

“AFL clubs are not known for their patience with players who offend, but they are committed to keeping him,” Mr Percy said.

Sydney Stack has escaped with a $6000 fine for breaching Western Australia’s strict COVID-19 quarantine laws, but his hopes of an international music career have taken a blow.

Stack appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday for his sentencing, having already pleaded guilty to one count of failing to comply with a direction.

Both the defence and prosecution agreed a fine would be a suitable punishment, but Stack’s lawyer Tom Percy also pushed for a spent conviction.

Mr Percy said Stack was a “budding musician” who was keen to travel to the United States to explore opportunities.

But the magistrate rejected the request, saying it was important to deter others from offending in a similar manner.

Mr Percy said Stack left the residence in Northam because it was overcrowded and he had a falling out with his family.

Stack, who had been on parole in Perth since January, is planning to return to Melbourne on Sunday to link up with Richmond.

But an AFL return appears unlikely for quite some time.

Stack still has to serve three more matches of the 10-match ban he copped for breaking the AFL’s return-to-play protocols last year.

Mr Percy said that Stack only rated himself “25 per cent” match fit compared to what was required at AFL level.

Outside court, Stack apologised for his breach, saying he was remorseful for using up the Western Australia’s valuable resources.

When asked if he thinks he will be able to return to AFL ranks after serving the remainder of his ban, Stack replied: “Not in my head, I don’t think so.”

“It (my body) is not AFL ready. I have a lot of work to do when I get back.”

Stack has played 26 games for the Tigers, but is out of contract at season’s end and faces an uncertain future.

Mr Percy said Stack knew he was unlikely to get another chance if he made another mistake.

Richmond General Manager - Football Talent Blair Hartley, who supported Stack in court today, said the entire Club looked forward to welcoming the 20-year-old back to Melbourne.

“Clearly, the last few months have been difficult for Sydney, so it was great to get some good news today that he can re-join our football program in Victoria,” Hartley said.

“Sydney’s welfare and overall health will remain our priority upon his return, and we will continue to support him however best we can.

“We would like to thank all those that have helped Sydney during his time in Western Australia in particular his manager Paul Peos and the AFLPA.”
