The AFL website is tipping us to win by around 5 goals.

Match preview: Carlton v Richmond

AFL.com.au
Riley Beveridge
Mar 19, 2019

Where and when: MCG, Thursday March 21, 7.20pm AEDT

Last time they met: MCG, round one, 2018: Richmond 17.19 (121) defeated Carlton 15.5 (95)

The Blues stunned the Tigers when they kicked the first five goals of last year's season-opener, only to be overrun. Richmond led by just four points at the final change, but eventually put the game to bed in the last term. Charlie Curnow earned the three Brownlow votes after kicking five goals.

What it means for Carlton: After a two-win season last year, this could set the tempo for Carlton's improvement. While a win would appear unlikely on the surface, a greater sense of competitiveness could bring about some optimism for the year ahead.

What it means for Richmond:
The Tigers were stunned in last year's preliminary final and must respond in round one. A lethargic performance could spell some concern among fans. But should they produce an emphatic performance, 2019 could bring more dominance.

How Carlton wins:
The Blues always get up for the season-opener. If they can ride the wave of positivity stemming from their JLT campaign, maybe they can shock the Tigers.

How Richmond wins:
The Tigers beat their young opponents with their forward pressure. Should they get the game on their terms early, it could spell bad news for the Blues.

The stat: The streak is dead, long live the streak. The Tigers have won seven straight games against the Blues. But before that, the Blues had won 11 of the previous 12 against the Tigers.

The match-up: Patrick Cripps v Dustin Martin

Two of the best midfielders in the competition. Martin is still ranked as the No.1 player in the game by AFL Player Ratings, while Cripps is ranked No.19. Both are bulls out of the centre, and both can also have a massive impact moving forward.

It's a big week for: Jack Riewoldt (Richmond)

Regardless of whether Tom Lynch makes his debut for the Tigers, this could be a massive night for the reigning Coleman Medal winner. Should the club's new recruit play, the dynamic between the two will be intriguing. Should he not, Riewoldt will be keen to show he's still the big dog.

Expect Jack Riewoldt to have a big night irrespective of Tom Lynch's availability. Picture: AFL Photos

Big call:
Forget Lynch, Jack proves he's still the main attraction in Richmond's forward line.

Prediction: Richmond by 29 points

Five burning questions: Richmond v Carlton

Peter Ryan
The Age
20 March 2019

Season 2019 will come to life on Thursday night when Carlton and Richmond clash in front of a packed MCG. Here are the burning questions.

What impact will star recruit Tom Lynch have on the match?

The 26-year-old is not overhyped. He is a genuine match winner who will complement Jack Riewoldt perfectly as he leads hard at the ball and wins the ball on the ground. Of course it might take some time for Lynch to settle into his groove inside 50 but it might not, either. He kicked a lazy eight goals when playing for the Suns against Carlton in round two last season and his desire to impress will be even greater tomorrow night when he plays his first game under lights at the MCG.

What will the Tigers throw at the Blues' No.1 pick Sam Walsh?

The number one pick has not put a foot wrong in the pre-season but he will be tested physically and mentally as he enters the AFL scene. The presence of Lynch, and subsequent commentary around his performance, might take the pressureoff the first-gamer. The 18-year-old has great poise and confidence but he also has plenty to learn and his real education will begin against the ruthless Tigers. What will make things interesting is that umpires will pay free kicks to players who are niggled off the ball unnecessarily, which will make it harder for opponents wanting to get nasty towards young on-ballers. Whatever Walsh provides in round one it's worth remembering he is just 18.

Can Carlton improve their scoring power?

As the list takes shape with Patrick Cripps leading a young midfield, Charlie Curnow enthusing a disparate forward line and Jacob Weitering aiming to become the key defender Carlton craves, the focus will now turn to performance. The first hurdle might be kicking 100 points, something the Blues have not managed for 55 games, last reaching the mark in round 11, 2016. Mitch McGovern, Alex Fasolo and Harry McKay give the Blues more than one option inside 50 while their number of inside-50s will surely exceed last year's average of 45. Although Blues coach Brendon Bolton says the total points is immaterial it would be nice to get that monkey off the back early in the season while a win would be a bonus as Carlton hasn't beaten Richmond in the season-opener since 2012. A loss would be veteran Marc Murphy's 100th loss while a win would make it win 150 as he plays his 250th game.
How will the players, coaches, umpires and fans adapt to the new rules?

Unnecessary 50-metre penalties marred last year's season-opener so expect outrage if a player incurs two consecutive 50-metre penalties or a team gives away a free kick for not being in their starting positions. The fans will notice the absence of runners about as much as they noted their presence last season but the coaches' frustration might peak as they struggle to get messages to their players. That should make television cutaways to the coaches box more enthralling for those at home. Goal-line technology including the new 'snicko' will once again be under scrutiny as the AFL attempts to get more decisions right than wrong. Expect more open clearances and the chance for some high-flying or leading forwards to cash in on quick breakaways more often. Beyond that the game will be much the same, as confusing and confounding and as unpredictable as ever.

Is Richmond's quest for redemption likely to succeed?

Last year's shock preliminary final loss to Collingwood was a shattering end to a season that hit such great heights but finishing third gives the Tigers motivation for 2019.

Dustin Martin's emerged wiser after dealing with the reality of backing up 2017 while key forward Lynch has been added to an already good line-up. The core is as strong as ever although the real test for the Tigers will come if Trent Cotchin, Martin, Alex Rance (playing game 200 in round one) or Jack Riewoldt (playing game 250) are injured. The rule changes will force them to defend differently. Richmond is good but this year will be more difficult than the previous two with the expectations being that they will be slower out of the blocks this season as they build towards a positive conclusion.

Tigers looking to avoid repeat from last Blues fixture: Vlastuin

By SEN
20 March 2019[/i]

Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin has stressed the importance of a fast start ahead of their season opener against Carlton at the MCG tomorrow night.

In the corresponding fixture last year, the Blues jumped the Tigers by booting the opening five goals to take narrow leads into both the quarter-time and half-time intervals.

Damien Hardwick’s side went on to win the match comfortably in the end, but Vlastuin says they don’t want to be playing catch-up from the outset this time around.

“Both teams got off to a good start until half-time then we managed to wrestle it back,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We were playing players in different positions and different roles within the side, so that did affect it a little bit.

“Winning becomes a habit so it’s good to look at it that way, but you don’t want to give teams a six-to-seven goal head start and have to chase them down.”

Vlastuin, 24, put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension that will see him remain at Punt Road until at least the end of 2021.

Richmond have dominated this fixture in recent times, winning the last seven meetings.
