Former test umpire Talbot explained that the 3rd umpire ticks off his checks:

1. Proximity of the ball to the bat?
2. Any deviation of the ball?
3. Hotspot?
4. Snicko (RTS)?

Even if the first three show no evidence of a snick, if snicko shows even a small spike as the ball passes the bat or the next frame after that (as light travels faster than sound) then the batsman will be given out.

In India's innings there was a review. Original decision was not out. On review  there was no hotspot, and a ever so slight spike on Snicko. Decision was not reversed and it remained not out. Now applying what Taufel said (the protocols) it should have been out........but not on Blocker's watch.

And that's why the DRS system is flawed. You are still relying on umpires to make decisions despite the technology. And as our 2nd tier umpires have shown not just in this test series but especially in the BBL, they are not up to it.

Never been a fan of neutral umpires but bring them back! Our umpires have put the chances of home umpires being returned permanently in the bin. Oxenbauld has been pathetic

WP, the BBL umpiring has certainly been laughable. Batsmen given out lbw when they've hit the ball with the middle of their bat .

Taufel added that in the Paine dismissal there was no other explanation for the sniko spike as the ball passed the bat. Yesterday, Starc had walked nearly off the ground but because he had hit his shoe it was impossible to know via sniko if he had hit the ball so he was given not out by the 3rd ump and called back to the crease.

You're right though, DRS is grey because it allows for these umpire's calls.
