Hope Fox Footy do a Grand Final recall this time, never did one in '17... :shh

Heath Shaw's mid-game admission to Dustin Martin during Grand Final mauling

By Alex Zaia
SEN
10 Feb 2020

Ray Shaw has revealed a mid-game admission from son Heath during GWS' Grand Final thrashing to the hands of Richmond last season.

The Tigers romped to an 89-point win in one of the most one-sided Grand Finals in VFL/AFL history and Shaw says even Heath waved the white flag as the Giants could only muster just three goals for the entire match.

“It was all over at half-time,” the Collingwood great told SEN’s This Is Your Sporting Life - For Tobin Brothers Funerals, celebrating lives.

“I remember Heath (Shaw) talking to us afterwards and he said to Dusty (Dustin Martin) halfway through the third quarter: ‘Why don’t they just blow the siren now!’

“You try, but you are not going to get there. They were shot.”

After watching GWS in their pre-game warm-up, Shaw sensed something was amiss despite it being their maiden Grand Final appearance.

The build-up to the match centred around the fitness of captain Phil Davis who underwent a fitness test on a calf complaint less than an hour before the first bounce.

“I go to every game early and I like to watch the warm-up,” Shaw said.

“You can see whether they are on or they’ve got a bit of spring, and Rhyce (Shaw) and I were talking about it, they didn’t have any spring even before the game.

“In the warm-up they were flat, they didn’t look lively at all.”

The Giants still haven't watched the GF either.

Why Razor Ray got a hug and apology from Dustin Martin on Grand Final day

By Nic Negrepontis
SEN
12 Feb 2020

AFL umpire ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain has revealed why he got an apology from Richmond star Dustin Martin during the 2019 Grand Final.

Chamberlain pinged Dusty for holding the ball late in the third quarter, which Martin clearly disagreed with as he lashed out at the umpire, saying “for f—’s sake Razor”, leading to a 50m penalty for abuse.

The soon-to-be two-time Norm Smith Medallist would seek out Razor Ray later in the game for a hug and an apology.

“I do recall at the start of the last quarter Dusty came into the centre bounce and I was starting the last quarter,” Chamberlain told SEN’s Whatley.

“We shared a hug and he goes, ‘I’m real sorry, I just got angry’.

“And I said, ‘that’s okay I do that too sometimes, that’s normal isn’t it’.

“They’re competing and it’s the big stage and it’s for a premiership and you expect them to be invested and that is totally okay.”

Martin would finish the game with four goals and his second Norm Smith Medal.

The GF moment that brought Dimma to tears

He is one of footy’s most renowned hard men but former rugged defender Damien Hardwick has admitted he was reduced to tears late in the Grand Final.

Hardwick told Fox Footy’s season launch on Monday night at Crown that Trent Cotchin’s late goal from the centre bounce saw him hit with emotion.

The Tigers have a selfless culture, but as Cotchin broke from the centre his coach was desperate for him to ignore the leading Tom Lynch.

“It is actually my favourite moment from the Grand Final. I still get emotional just seeing it,” he told Fox Footy’s Eddie McGuire at the launch.

“Myself and Trent went through a lot together, and to see that goal and what it meant to our footy club was really important. Tommy Lynch was leading out of the square and he couldn’t have been more open but we were all saying, ‘Just kick it over his head’, and to see the players get around him…

“Trent will go down as one of the all-time leaders of the Richmond Football Club. To see what he has done is just outstanding and I shed a little tear in the box when I saw that goal go through. I was so happy for him.”

Hardwick revealed Dustin Martin’s squared ball to his former housemate Marlion Pickett wasn’t just inspired, it was orchestrated.

“Incredible really. It’s hard to believe he has played one game and has got four TV shows coming out. I have done more interviews about Marlion than anyone else….

“Him and Dusty had that really strong connection and Marlion moved in with Dusty for about three weeks and you can imagine the conversation would have been fast and vigorous.

“You can see that vision, we get different bits of vision and from behind the goal you could see Dustin telling Marlion where to run and he was obviously going to set the goal up.

“I was watching the crowd and every person in the stadium went up.

“People in Marlion’s situation, there are a lot of people out there who think their chance has passed but we can open up opportunities for people like that and the supplementary list is important.”
