Summary:

* Only two of our 23+ years old players are not premiership players. So Aarts and Markov will be first to go unless they have some sort of a breakout year and play regular seniors.

* 14 of our senior core are between 27-31 years of age while there's a thinning out in the middle age bracket (22-26). The latter the remnant of the Lennon, C.Ellis, Yarran busts from the 2013-15 drafts (thankfully we hit pay dirt in the 2014 rookie draft). So we need to strike again in the next 2-3 years before our current window shuts due to our older champions eventually retiring.

* We've invested heavily in youth in the last three drafts. So on average it's still a youthful list. This will allow us next year (especially if there's a retirement or two) to hit the free agency and trade period to fill in gaps within the 22-26 bracket.

* In terms of list balance, we're okay as far as the spread across rucks, KPPs, mids and smalls. Looking forward 5 years from now it's going to be a question of quality. Developing our youth and free agency as mentioned will be crucial in terms of restocking our A-grade talent. There may also be a need (not by choice) to fall down the ladder for a year or two to access the high end of the draft before rising again and challenging.

We need to strike again in the next two years with a flag. We loose a few top talents then and unless we find a few more in the free agent market we might be in for a bit of a rebuild. I like some of the talent coming through but it's hard to see them replacing Reiwolt, Cotchin, Rance, Martin etc.

Martin has plenty of time left but it's Rance, Jack & Edwards for me.

Admittedly we did well most of the year without our major bookends though!

Spot on we were depleted at one stage and got the wins ticking and found some great youngsters.

We will need to bring in 2 maybe 3 Agraders from other clubs over the next 3 or 4 years to maintain our position.

Wonder if Fyfe has finally woken up to the fact he's never going to win a flag at Freo - can't demand top dollar given he's 28 now and might even take a further pay cut to have one last crack at glory with his beloved Tigers... :shh

Some serious in depth targetting needs to take place. At this stage I see us needing to target a blue chip key defender and blue chip midfielder.

Sounds a bit dramtic.Build from the draft and free agency's along the way. We got good kids keep on adding. No matter what players like Rance and Martin if you replace them with someone half as good, good enough there once in a generation players.

Im pretty confident that our list management will already have some targets in mind. Its not being dramatic, its just reality. From both a playing petspective and salary cap point of view. The salary cap requires a minimum spend and thats why we'll target big names when some of our stars decide to retire.

Next year's free agents are limited to mids, key forwards and small/rebounding defenders.

The Giants trio of Whitfield, Cameron and Williams arguably at the top of that list.

Brad Crouch will probably be linked by rumour to us again.

Daniher and Viney are injury-prone and the former will want to go to the Swans if he leaves.

Fyfe is contracted with Freo until 2023, Dio.

Not dramatic at all the last three drafts we have had just one pick inside the top 20 the blue chips are usually well and truly gone  before then. You need your share of blue chips coming through. With the picks we have had the question has to be do we the blue chips on our list.

We dont have a replacement for Cotchin or even Prestia yet alone Martin atm or to put it more mildly none are yet to show they will get up to those players level. Thats not to say some wont but being pragmatic it doesnt look currently likely.

None of the talls ATM look remotely capable of attaining Rance Riewoldt status and JR is another we need to be proactive about finding a replacement.

When it comes to talls in particular we have not developed one quality KPP from the draft since 06 Riewoldt, 07 Rance, 09 astbury and 10 psd Grimes.

Those remaining on the list
Soldo cat B rookie. Ruckman. If honest hes lacking in areas but servicable as a ruckman
Nankervis mature trade ruckman. Has his limitations just a solid player
Chol rookie. fwd/ruck. Will be 23 in january. Still very light and very inconsistent not sure he will make it and if he does to what level.
Coleman - Jones nd 20. Ruck/Fwd. Just a baby who does show a heap of promise at just 20yrs still a long way to go before we know what we have.

Lynch f/a. KPF. A grader
Miller nd 63. KP?. very early but atm he doesnt look like it.
Balta nd 25. KPD. Very promising athletically. Looks likely but to what level
Nyuon nd 54. KPD. just too early to say anything.

Broad mature nd 67. tall DEF. Imo servicable.
Garthwaite nd 72 Tall DEF. Dont see him as KPP  and not sure he has the traits to play third tall.

Hardly a big investment in talls and certainly very few decent picks, just two on any type of tall.Lynch aside where is the top end talent coming thru. And before people start jumping up and down about the age of those left and they have time who really projects fwd as a player in the Rance Riewoldt Lynch  league. Imo not much chance of drafting a blue chip kpp with late nd and rookie picks. The way we have gone the last 9 10 yrs it will have to be thru F/A to replace our top end talls.

Simple fact is atm we have half the list with very few games behind them nearly all 22 and under players, theres 20 of them and only 4 have more than 20 games with the most being 39.
there has been a regular core that we have built our success on.Most of that core is now starting to get on.
I think Ramps is right some serious in depth targeting of quality picks or players needs to start taking place.

Getable from the end 2021 onwards IMO if Freo don't show real improvement...will be 30 , so unlikely to be of absolute premium trade value and we can also probably get them to pay part of his salary until 2023 like we had to with Deledio at GWS...:shh
