Hardwick delivered the ultimate praise to five-gamer Maurice Rioli, whose return three games ago, the coach said, coincided with the re-emergence of “the Richmond style of game”.

“He was probably a little bit quieter last week, but defensively he’s just elite at what he does,” he said.

“We call it that when he’s playing, people see ghosts (just with) the pressure that he puts on. They know he’s there and around the contest and he’s just exciting and our players love playing with him.

“His energy is infectious and our players feed off it, so although he’s a little bit quieter last week, we think he’ll be much better this week.”

In the name of the father: Maurice Jr on footy’s great legacy

Maurice Rioli Jr carries one of football’s most famous surnames. He opens up on his sadness at losing his father as a kid, the special player his dad was and his childhood.

Dimma's comments post-game on Maurice jnr.

Hardwick: "It was good to see Maurice step up in that moment [our last goal]. Maurice is effectively a first year player. He's just getting better and better. There's some things he does incredibly well and there's areas of his game he needs to improve, but he's young. We like what he brings - the energy he brings. It inspires what he brings defensively. He had a good ... ummm ... okay game today I should say."

Maurice needs to play every game from here on out. Just as simple as that.

David King on 'First Crack' tonight praised Maurice's game today. He loved Junior's 2nd, 3rd and in one clip 5 chase and pressure efforts in one play.

His pressure and chasing was great. Still work to do on his tank but loads of talent.

I'm really enjoying what Maurice Jnr is bringing to the team.  It just makes me think of the future when he is a fully developed player going into the midfield & running rings around some of the best - like throwing a wolf in amongst the sheep.  I remember the impact his father had when he first came over, Snr had his flaws & needed to work on a few things but he quickly became the most damaging player in the league.  Snr was a fully grown man & ready-made player who was built like a cannon ball, whereas Jnr is starting as a young bloke still building his body & fitness.  But when all the construction work is finished we are going to have one serious weapon!
Its only early days but I think Jnr has the potential to be a more all round player than his father ever was, that alone is pretty exciting!       ;D
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!  Loud, proud & dangerous!

Maurice's uncle and father of Willie Rioli at the Eagles, Willie snr, passed away at 50 from a heart attack. Willie Rioli won't be playing for the Eagles this weekend. Not sure what's happening with Maurice jnr (and Dan for that matter)?

Hoping he can become a bit cleaner with the ball in hand as he gets more experience. Think it might be a case of his brain thinking faster than his body can process which is common in the younger players.

His pressure is great. Wouldn't drop him unless he's stuffed.

Agree, has got the defensive side of his game down pat. Just needs to work on his game with ball in hand. I’m sure he’ll get there.

Taking it one step further, the best way to judge the value of a player's pressure is looking at if it causes turnovers from the opposition, and measuring pressure act effectiveness based on the score by a team generated by a player's pressure. It's here, that Richmond young gun Maurice Rioli dominates.

The excitement machine has only played 12 matches this season, but from those 12, he has forced 46 turnovers, which resulted in a whopping 106 points created for his side.

To put that into perspective, Brisbane's Lincoln McCarthy has generated 99 points for the Lions from his pressure acts, but he has played eight more matches than the aforementioned Tiger.

For good reason our attention gravitates to the eye-catching midfielders and goal-kickers, or even defensive interceptors, when looking for the most effective players on the park. But don't forget to notice and praise those at the source, the unsung heroes applying a stack of pressure to ensure your favourite players can thrive in the spotlight.

So he needs to play whenever he is fit, period.
