AFL fans could be in the stands as cardboard cut-outs.

Footy fans could have their very own cardboard cut-outs in the stands when AFL games resume next month.

Only the COVID-free Northern Territory has opened the door to crowds returning, with Victorian health authorities anticipating it will be months before they give the green light.

With that, the prospect of ‘virtual fans’ is being investigated by a number of clubs.

A large printing firm is already testing prototypes of weather-resistant plastic or cardboard cut-outs.

Collingwood have confirmed they are among the clubs considering turning it into a reality.

“We’re are working through that now,” Pies chief executive Mark Anderson told SEN radio.

“The fan one is fundamentally a virtual cardboard cut-out of the image of the person.

“Our plan is to do a sample of that across our membership base and run a competition to be in the stands even when you can’t be.

“That’s the plan and the thinking at the moment.”

Clubs could cover the costs with a sponsor’s backing as opposed to fans paying for their print-out.

The possibility of virtual fans comes after Channel 7 revealed what games will sound like for viewers at home.

Canned crowd noise will be piped through after empty grandstands made for awkward television in round one.

This is a more insane idea and not to mention a waste of resources than that time when they put tarps over the seats at Adelaide oval.

German soccer side Borussia Mönchengladbach used these plastic cut-outs last night at their stadium. Apparently each supporter paid 20 euros with the money donated to charity.

I'd rather an inflatable me, sitting not in the stand but in a corporate box with the window open, drinking an inflatable beer.

Thry are already doing it in South Korea I think it for their baseball.

North won't need cut-outs as they have been practising one fan social-distancing since 1925  ;D.

Cutout fans gaining momentum ... Pies a lock Round 2, Dogs Round 3 ... will superpower Richmond join in? “Not for us” said a very senior Tiger official today.

If there's no spike after today's protests surely they'll let the crowds come back? :shh

Perhaps if we promote the Dreamtime match as a #BLM protest they'll let us in?  :shh :shh

Pathetic that the government allows protesting in the first place.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
