Tiges vs Blues: Working Class vs the Establishment
« on: April 26, 2006, 02:36:26 PM »
Surely our club can sit down with Carltons management and find a date to create the "Class Wars". Today I listened to Mithen, I was saddened by his attempts to undermine Anzac Day for the pies and the dons. We should work our asses of to ensure "Dreamtime Day" with Essendon becomes a big event, and we should find a date to do the class wars with Carlton. Lets create 2 big games a year...and dont worry about undermining other stuff. Anyone have dates that we can do a big match with Carlton on an annual basis. Good Friday is the major one but no one seems like they want to do it...other dates may be possible...but RFCs admin needs to spend more time on developing our own stuff and dont worry about the rest. Id like your opinions and more importantly dates and then we can start a campaign to get our management to do something about it.

Good Friday is the one. I just saw a calendar. Theres not many dates available but Easter period is the best option. Whilst people get upset, in Australia people who believe in Christianity celebrate easter on different dates, tis especially the case with Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians celebrating usually 1 week apart or in some instance up to 1 month difference. Theres been plenty of times when weve had to do Easter when the Footys been on- no one has cared. So let there be footy on Catholic Good Friday- And let the Tigers and the Blues do it. The True Believers vs the Establishment.

Is the old class heritage of each club relevant these days? Carlton aren't actually rolling in dough anymore ;).  It was in Dyer's time and there was that mentality at the Blues under Elliot where they thought they could just buy  success and were above the law. I don't think that "class war" exists anymore between the two clubs and didn't one of those supporter surveys have us with a 60% more chance of having supporters who are professionals in their work. The hatred between the clubs IMO stems more from the on-field battles. I still want payback in a GF against them for what happened in 1982 lol.

IMO Anzac Day should be rotated between the clubs. At least b/w Vic clubs. The day belongs to everyone not just two clubs. The usual argument is that only Collingwood and Essendon could fill the 'G but there has been regularly a 15-25k difference in crowds between the Anzac game and the return game later on in the year. The significance of the day itself attracts more people to the footy more than any other H/A game; not who is playing.

Agree Ramps. Also their large supporter base should see them eventually through their current woes. The Blues at the moment are alot like where we were in the late 80's/early 90's - poor finances and playing list.

I agree and disagree. I think we should let the bumblers and the mags have the ANZAC. they are associated with it and we can build our own days. However you are right to say that it is not only those two who could fill the G. Fact is Collingwood v essendon carlton or us would fill it if the hype was there and carlton v Collingwood is probably a bigger crowd puller all things being equal anyway.

With a good team regularly competing like the Bums have had we could wipe the floor with the lot of them as well.

It would be nice to see other clubs have games, but i've got to admit that Coll and Essendon have built this day up to be a fantastic event, and i think if it was us as one of the teams and we'd done all that, we'd be peeed if say a Carlton or a Melbourne, or Essendon or Collingwood came along and claimed it.

We have to be just as clever and build up our own events.  Carlton is your first point of call, i reckon, and no-one else.  They are pubic enemy no. 1 and we've just got to find a theme/day, like Anzac Day or like the indigenous game this week against the Bombers and build it up.

I just can't imagine what kind of event Anzac Day would be with the Kangas and Dogs playing, so i say let them keep it, they've done it well.

I get annoyed with the ANZAC day game because of the way Eddie carries on about how only C'wood and E'don can bring in the crowd. What he forgets to acknowledge is the fact that one of the biggest crowds ever on ANZAC day at the MCG didn't involve Collingwood. It was in 1982 the Tigers played Essendon in front of a 92K+ crowd. I think to this day it is the 3rd largest ANZAC day crowd on record.

I'd let them keep it but I'd just like to Eddie to realise that there are other teams out there that can draw crowds
