Draft Combine: Tigers father-son prospect headlines list of 96 players invitedMatt Balmer
September 4, 2020
FOX SPORTSRichmond father-son prospect Maurice Rioli jnr is among the group of players invited to the 2020 AFL draft combine, in a year that has run like never before.
The AFL on Thursday released a list of 96 male players and 82 female players invited to test over coming months – but the combine won’t run as a big group event in Victoria as per the norm.
For most states, the combine will be held over the next five weeks, with Victoria’s event yet to be locked in due to the COVID-19 restrictions in the region.
Victoria has the largest group of players invited, making up nearly have of the total invites across the combines.
In recent weeks, AFL clubs were asked to submit a list of players to attend the combines, with all invitees receiving nominations from at least three clubs.
In total there are four father-son prospects and two father-daughter prospects, with Alice Burke (daughter of St Kilda great Nathan) and Maurcie Rioli jnr (son of Richmond champion Maurice) headlining the list.
Rioli is also eligible for Fremantle under father-son rules and Essendon as a next-generation academy prospect. The small forward has boarded at Melbourne’s Scotch College at recent years, impressing in the APS school boy competition.
Tarni Brown (daughter of Gavin), Luke Edwards (son of Tyson), Taj Schofield (son of Jarrad) and Ewan McPherson (son of Steve) are the others included in the list.
In total, there are 19 academy prospects including in the male list, with nine players linked as next-generation academy prospects.
The Western Bulldogs are set to match a top-five bid on key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, while Port Adelaide prospect Lachie Jones could also feature in the first round.
Gold Coast is set to a major draft bonanza given they have access to Alex Davies and Joel Jeffrey, while Sydney and Brisbane both have a number of top class prospects.
