Draft Combine: Tigers father-son prospect headlines list of 96 players invited

FOX SPORTS

Richmond father-son prospect Maurice Rioli jnr is among the group of players invited to the 2020 AFL draft combine, in a year that has run like never before.

The AFL on Thursday released a list of 96 male players and 82 female players invited to test over coming months – but the combine won’t run as a big group event in Victoria as per the norm.

For most states, the combine will be held over the next five weeks, with Victoria’s event yet to be locked in due to the COVID-19 restrictions in the region.

Victoria has the largest group of players invited, making up nearly have of the total invites across the combines.

In recent weeks, AFL clubs were asked to submit a list of players to attend the combines, with all invitees receiving nominations from at least three clubs.

In total there are four father-son prospects and two father-daughter prospects, with Alice Burke (daughter of St Kilda great Nathan) and Maurcie Rioli jnr (son of Richmond champion Maurice) headlining the list.

Rioli is also eligible for Fremantle under father-son rules and Essendon as a next-generation academy prospect. The small forward has boarded at Melbourne’s Scotch College at recent years, impressing in the APS school boy competition.

Tarni Brown (daughter of Gavin), Luke Edwards (son of Tyson), Taj Schofield (son of Jarrad) and Ewan McPherson (son of Steve) are the others included in the list.

In total, there are 19 academy prospects including in the male list, with nine players linked as next-generation academy prospects.

The Western Bulldogs are set to match a top-five bid on key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan, while Port Adelaide prospect Lachie Jones could also feature in the first round.

Gold Coast is set to a major draft bonanza given they have access to Alex Davies and Joel Jeffrey, while Sydney and Brisbane both have a number of top class prospects.

AFL releases best results from the 2020 NAB AFL Combines

125 of Australia's top junior male footballers completed the 2020 NAB AFL National Draft Combines held across multiple locations across Australia over the last few months.

Players from all states and territories were represented at the 2020 NAB AFL Draft Combines with a spread of talent across Australia including Queensland, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmania.

The 2020 NAB AFL Draft Combine assessed each player's athletic ability through several tests including 20-metre sprint, two-kilometre time-trial and vertical jump. Players height and weight were also recorded.

Among the players tested were AFL Club Academy eligible players including Blake Coleman, Jack Briskey, Carter Michael and Saxon Crozier from the Brisbane Lions Academy, Godfrey Okerenyang and Josh Green from the GWS GIANTS Academy, Braeden Campbell and Errol Gulden from the Sydney Swans Academy and Alex Davies, Joel Jeffrey, Brodie Lake and Max Pescud from the Gold Coast SUNS Academy.

A further nine Next Generation Academy players in Joel Western and Brandon Walker (Fremantle), Reef McInnes (Collingwood), Cody Brand and Josh Eyre (Essendon), Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Western Bulldogs), James Borlase (Adelaide Crows), Lachie Jones and Tariek Newchurch (Port Adelaide), and Conor Downie (Hawthorn) also completed the 2020 NAB AFL Draft Combine.

Three Father-Son eligible players in Luke Edwards (son of Adelaide Crows' star Tyson) Taj Schofield (son of Port Adelaide star Jarrad) and Ewan Macpherson (son of Western Bulldogs' star Steve) were also tested.

There's no mention of him being at the combine. Not even in the media articles stating which father-sons were in attendance. He must not have gone.

Shifter Sheahan on SEN just said MRJ will be the last one to be tested.
