Nah. No mention of how many rookies there will be. There is still no final decision from the AFL on list sizes nor TPP even though we're almost through the trade period :-P.

The Rookie list should be increased in my opinion , gives players a chance to stay on a list and prove themselves  at a reduced cost to the clubs

While a deal is yet to be locked away, sources familiar with the situation said lists were likely to drop by two spots from this year to next.

As it stands, clubs have 44 players on their lists (inclusive of senior listed and Category A rookies) as well as up to three Category B rookies.

AFL close to list size cuts as end of trades looms

AFL club lists sizes will be cut to a minimum of 37 and a maximum of 44 players - including all rookies – next year.

The number of primary list players will be cut by two and the total rookie numbers by one from limits this year.

Sources close to the situation confirmed the AFL is close to agreement with the AFL Players Association on final list sizes with an announcement expected in the next week. Further meetings were due to be held with the AFL Players Association on Thursday.

The players union and the AFL had wanted to finalise the figures before the trade period ended.

The salary cap is also close to being finalised for next year with a cut of “about 10 per cent” to apply with sources saying the final number appears close to nine per cent with one per cent to retirement fund.

The AFL is likely to hand responsibility for applying the cut to player contracts to clubs and will not mandate the reduction as a flat across the board percentage.

This idea has angered clubs who believe it now opens up weeks and months of pain and renegotiation of contracts with players and player agents at a time when staffing at clubs has been slashed with the soft cap reduced clubs.

There is discussion about whether first and second year players will be quarantined from the cuts.

The maximum number of primary listed players on club lists will drop to between 36 and 38 down from 38 to 40 now.

The maximum number of primary-listed players a club can have is contingent on the number of rookies the club wishes to take. This year if a club had 38 primary-listed players they could have up to six rookies, if they had 40 on the primary list they could have up to 4 rookies for a maximum of 44 players. They could then have up to three Category B rookies on top of that.

Under the plan for next year that primary list figure has now been cut by two - to a maximum of 38 primary list players - and clubs can have up to a maximum of six rookies (four category A rookies and two category B rookies) for a total maximum of 44 players.

If a clubs has a full book of seven rookies (four category A and three Category B) they can have only 37 players on their primary list.

Category B rookies are the players coming to the AFL from outside the system – the overseas players or the soccer players or basketballers. This year clubs could have up to three Category B rookies next year it will be cut to two.

A club next year could have as few as 36 primary listed players but then they must also have at least one rookie – to get to the overall minimum figure of 37 players. Previously there was no requirement for a club to have any rookie listed players.

Player agents and some clubs were briefed on the likely changes on Wednesday.

So we have dropped two and Rance retired. Technically that's all we have to lose but I assume there will be more and we take on 2 draft picks. Generally myself I'd avoid the draft and take existing players. It's going to be a raffle and who knows of you'll get a buddy or a bomb

Tom Morris said on Fox Footy tonight that it's only one mandatory pick in the draft this year instead of the usual three pick minimum....

It is such a compromised draft this year as about half the top 30 are part of other clubs agency’s and then there is quite a few priority picks.
By the time it gets to our 2nd  pick it will be equivalent to a 3rd round pick
I guess that’s why Richmond don’t seem as interested in this years draft
By trading a couple along with the delisting allows us to keep most our existing players.
The draft system has become a joke in so many ways, I hope it improves with the new changes and the sooner they make clubs pay for free agents the fair it will get.

If we only have to pick one then we've dropped traded retired 5. Do we have to lose any more, I don't think so. Looking at the RFC site we had 48. So take one pick and pray it's the next Nat Fife at pick 17.

If lists are being reduced by two(?)  we'll still have three spots...you'd think we'll draft at least two of which one will be MJ... like to see us re-draft Turner as a rookie but don't think we will....hopefully we'll also be able to snag Ethan Baxter as a Cat B rookie which falls outside the list restrictions...

All AFL players will be asked to vote on a new pay deal in the next three days, which will see them receive a 3.5 per cent reduction across the board in 2021.

If approved by players, foxfooty.com.au understands there will be a nine per cent decrease to Total Player Payments, down to $13.17 million per club.

But not all players will cop the brunt of this nine per cent wage cut. Instead, decreases in list sizes and contracts for first-year players will fill the void.

— For players who had a contract for next year before COVID-19 hit, they will take a 3.5 per cent pay cut.

— For players who signed a deal after the mid-year contract freeze, there will be no wage reduction.

— For players who had a contract for 2021 and beyond before the COVID-19 break, they will cop a 3.5 per cent reduction next year, with clubs having the ability to shift their salary by a further five per cent in the later years of their contract.

It’s expected players will approve of the deal by a significant majority when the AFL Players’ Association takes each club through the details later this week.

There will also be a reduction of 10 per cent into the AFLPA’s retirement account, player development, union funding, injury account and others.

The AFL slashed each club’s soft cap by a whopping 30 per cent this year, leading to mass redundancies across the industry and dozens of assistant coaches out of work. But this relatively minor pay cut for players is a product of months of negotiations between Gillon McLachlan’s team and Paul Marsh’s team.

It’s understood that the players’ share of revenue will sore beyond 30 per cent in 2021 under this revised deal.

However, there will be a mechanism to capture any additional revenue above forecast. There will be a downside clause should COVID-19 have a significant impact on the AFL’s finances in 2021.

Put simply, there will be less money for players who are yet to find a home in 2021.

AFL player agents were briefed early on Wednesday afternoon regarding the changes.

Sources with knowledge of negotiations believe this deal is a win for players, who at one stage were facing a 15 to 20 per cent cut in salaries.

As first reported by foxfooty.com.au last Thursday, clubs will only be required to select a minimum of one player in December’s national draft, down from three.

Don't see Baker and Pickett remaining as rookies given they are dual premiership players. Surely they will be promoted.

That will still allow 3 National draft picks including MRJ.

So that would lead to 38 senior listed players: current 33 plus Baker, Pickett, MRJ, pick 17 and pick 36.
 
4 Cat-A rookies: Aarts, Chol, Stack plus rookie pick 18.

2 Cat-B rookies: Eggy, Colina.

Agree with Dio in that I wouldn't mind rookie-ing Fraser Turner.
