The superstar AFL free agents of 2021

NICK VLASTUIN (Richmond) [restricted]

For two years, the Tigers have only lost depth players in the trade period, but at some point rivals will come knocking for their premiership stars, offering more than Richmond can.

The 26-year-old Vlastuin signed a two-year extension in early 2019, taking him up to free agency and allowing him maximum leverage to sign a big-money deal.

He’s worth one, after all, and there’d hardly be a club that wouldn’t want a defender of his calibre.

Floss could potentially be our next captain.

Clubs have already come for our premiership stars. They have all stayed barring B.Ellis who left with our blessing anyway. Graham and Broad were latest to reject offers from other clubs.

Dylan Grimes, Nick Vlastuin and David Astbury

A major reason behind the Tigers’ recent premiership dynasty is this trio, which have played in all three of the club’s flags. Coincidentally, all three are eligible for free agency at the end of 2021. With little room to move in Richmond’s salary cap, it’s likely any of Vlastuin, Grimes or Astbury could get more cash at rival clubs — and they’d be handsomely remunerated, as they all are among the league’s best defenders. Whether they’d be prepared to stay at the club on less money and keep the Tigers’ flag window open for as long as possible is the big question. Vlastuin is slightly younger than Grimes and Astbury, but you could argue Grimes would still be the greater attraction of the trio.

they will all stay

Only question mark would be Astbury and that would only be around retirement I reckon

Skippers, flag heroes, stars galore in MONSTER free agency crop

By Mitch Cleary and Callum Twomey - 6 hrs ago

The 2021 free agency crop is a monster

SEVEN Richmond premiership stars headline this year's bumper free agency crop which looms as the best in its decade of existence.

AFL.com.au can reveal 140 players are eligible for free agency this season, including 10 club captains and a host of superstars of the competition.

Jack Riewoldt will become a free agent for the first time, joining Nick Vlastuin, David Astbury, Kamdyn McIntosh, Shane Edwards and Bachar Houli as Tigers up for grabs.

>>Scroll down for the full list of free agents

Triple premiership defender Dylan Grimes also qualifies but is understood to be closing in on a fresh deal to remain at Punt Road beyond 2021.

It looms as the Tigers' toughest test to keep together its successful list after losing just two premiership players (Brandon Ellis and Dan Butler) to rival raids across their three flag years.

Cal Twomey and Mitch Cleary reveal the big name free agents for 2021

Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, Blues co-captain Patrick Cripps and Essendon jet Zach Merrett are first-time free agents as they enter their eighth season at their original clubs out of contract.

They are joined by a host of fellow 2013 NAB AFL Draft products including Giant Josh Kelly, Saint Jack Billings, Roo Luke McDonald, Demon Christian Salem, Eagle Dom Sheed and Crow Matt Crouch.

Skippers Dayne Zorko (Brisbane), Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood), Joel Selwood (Geelong), Max Gawn (Melbourne), Jack Ziebell (North Melbourne) and Luke Parker (Sydney) are also included.

Former Greater Western Sydney co-captain Callan Ward has been removed from the list after penning an extension with the Giants for 2022.

Collingwood goalkicker Jamie Elliott would have qualified but has hit a trigger for a third season for his contract, seeing him extended through to the end of 2022, while Carlton midfielder Jack Newnes was also originally set to again be a free agent but has also hit a trigger clause tying him to the Blues to the end of next year.

This year's bevy of names can be in part attributed to the uncertainty around future salary caps last year which saw clubs defer extending already contracted players.

Bontempelli, Cripps and Merrett will spearhead the list of restricted free agents who qualify as eight or nine-year players entering free agency for the first time and who sit in the top 25 per cent of their club's earners.

Other players expected to fall into this range include Kelly, Crouch, Billings and Vlastuin.

Bids for restricted free agents can be matched by their existing club – such as the Giants' landmark call on Jeremy Cameron last year which forced the Coleman medallist to seek a trade to Geelong.

Any players outside the top 25 per cent of earners or who have served 10 years or more at their current club will be eligible as unrestricted free agents.

Players previously delisted or those who have previously qualified as free agents fall into the same bracket.

St Kilda key target Tim Membrey looms as a fascinating unrestricted free agency case having been delisted from Sydney at the end of 2014 before becoming a regular contributor at the Saints.

Brisbane midfielder Jarryd Lyons also qualifies after moving from Gold Coast to Brisbane as a delisted free agent at the end of 2018.

Essendon's Dylan Clarke and Carlton's Matt Kennedy, among a host of players delisted and 're-rookied' by their clubs at the end of 2020, are also deemed 'free agents for life'.

Players such as Port Adelaide pair Tom Rockliff and Steven Motlop and Fremantle's Reece Conca, who moved as a free agent and fall out of contract at their new club, are classed as unrestricted free agents.

Free agency was introduced by the AFL in 2012.

Wouldnt be surprised if we haveca go at Tim O'Brien from Hawthorn. We had a crack 3 years ago and he stayed at the hawks but with Riewoldt coming to an end, Tim O'Brien may be a good option for us.

Geez talk about quantity over qualty...take out Cripps, Bont, Kelly & Gawn all of whom we're next to no chance of getting and that's a very mediocre crop... :shh

Updated free agents:

Richmond still has premiership players David Astbury, Bachar Houli and Kamdyn McIntosh as unrestricted free agents this year, while the Tigers' free agency list has grown in recent weeks after the addition of Matthew Parker through the mid-season rookie draft. The former Saint qualifies after being previously delisted by St Kilda.

Id take Liberatore and Wallis from the Dogs and you might even get Wallis as he is a bit on the outer ATM.  But the vast majority are too old for our needs and the real quality like Cripps or Robbie Gray we wouldnt have the salary space for.  Still its probably a great year for the likes of St Kilda and Hawthorn who are rebuilding.  Fill a few gaps for a couple of years with that lot.

Though of course St Kilda think they are contending with a pile of retreads and will probably self destruct later this year or early next year when they sack Ratten after 30+ injuries (Im projecting their injury list but they are getting close to it) in 2 years.

Free agency update - RICHMOND

Bachar Houli^
Kamdyn McIntosh
Mabior Chol*
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith*
Matthew Parker*
Ben Miller*

There's some interesting names still on the free agency list at Punt Road. Three-time premiership defender Astbury would be expected to get a new deal in line with some of the extensions given to other veteran flag heroes, but there's been no movement on a new deal for McIntosh, a two-time premiership wingman. Chol has plenty of interest in the market given his ability as a key forward and ruck and limited opportunities at Richmond in recent years, while Houli, who went down with an ankle injury over the weekend, is towards the end of an accomplished career. – Callum Twomey
