Richmond vs Carlton --- Round 1, March 18, 2021

David Teague's comments post-game were interesting. He said last year the KPIs were similar between both sides but it was one-sided to us on the scoreboard. Whereas last night the scores were close for the most of the night yet the KPIs heavily favoured us.

- We had 16 inside 50s from centre clearances but we only scored 2 points from them.

- We apparently had something like 53 inside 50s to 17 in the second half.

Just shows how inefficient we were going inside F50. The connection between our mids and forwards was off and we wasted plenty of chances allowing Carlton to rebound easily out of our forward line.


Carlton also scored 60% from their F50s entries so we gave up soft goals too.

It's only round 1 and there's always rustiness but we've got plenty of things to work on before next week.

The umpire should of cleared that clown hanging off of Astbury so he could take his bloody kick, what was he doing?  Astbury shrugs him off and he throws a primadonna, next thing they goal and Astbury is going to the tribunal, amazing, if you like soccer or live theatre...

Reckon I counted 5 shots at goal from very gettable spots that went OOF, OOB or didn't make the distance.

We played rubbish in round 1 last year and that draw with Collingwood had everyone writing us off. I back the club and Dimma and the boys to make the necessary tweeks for round 2

Go the Tigers by the way. Loved having footy back and watching Dustin do his thing while I did stuff all at work.

Our win on Thursday night was a club record 7 straight Round 1 wins .

Curiously, we scored 105 three times in that run.

RICHMOND

The Tigers want to repeat as premiers - so a repeat of recent Round 1s works quite nicely. As has become typical, Carlton provided a bit of a challenge in the season opener before fading late to lose by four goals. It was Richmond’s eighth consecutive Round 1 win over the Blues.

In the votes

You may have heard about this Dustin Martin guy. He’s alright. Rather than saving his best for another Grand Final, Dusty simply dominated the first game of the year, racking up 31 disposals, two goals and four goal assists. He was everywhere and always dangerous. Jack Riewoldt (four goals) had a strong game which was particularly important as Tom Lynch was blanketed by Jacob Weitering. At the other end Noah Balta continued to make opposition fans think “jeez, they lose Alex Rance and just find this guy who’s threatening to be as good, that’s unfair!”. Jack Graham (33 disposals, 836 metres gained) had one of his best games for the club.

Room for improvement

As mentioned earlier, Tom Lynch was kept quiet, ending up with 11 disposals and a goal in a losing battle with Jacob Weitering. Marlion Pickett, who was the late replacement for the ill Trent Cotchin finished with 13 disposals and looked nervous at crucial moments. You suspect he’ll be a simple omission for a healthy Cotchin next week.

Positive(s): Dusty isn’t slowing, Tigers still hungry

Dustin Martin picked up where he left off in Thursday night's win over Carlton.

The three-time Norm Smith Medallist produced a mix of brute power and delicate finesse in his 31-disposal, two-goal game which included two goal assists and 12 score involvements.

When the game was there to be won, Martin (with help from Jack Riewoldt) turned it on and got it done once again.

The Tigers also showed no signs of dropping off with a fierce hunger to win evident when the game was in the balance.

Negative: Lack of pressure (at times)

Richmond allowed the Blues to move the ball swiftly from end to end.

The Tigers gave up a number of goals direct from their forward 50 with Carlton at times shifting the ball from defence to attack with relative ease and under less pressure than we are used to seeing from the reigning premiers.

Damien Hardwick has built his side differently to that and no doubt there will be plenty of work on that specific aspect this week ahead of their clash with Hawthorn.
