TOP-END DRAFT MOVEMENT NOT EXPECTED

The early order of the NAB AFL Draft is expected to hold as is until potential moves closer to the event in November.

Clubs within the top-10 picks have fielded many calls about possible swaps and splitting of top selections but after the first week of the Trade Period it is looking increasingly likely the top 10 will stay as is.

North Melbourne has knocked back big offers for pick No.1 and won't budge while Greater Western Sydney will hold firm with its No.2 selection for now with the possibility to sliding back closer to the draft for the right offer.

Gold Coast at pick No.3 and Adelaide at No.4 have both been interested at pushing up the order, while Hawthorn has tried to improve its draft position too but is at this stage considered unlikely to move from No.5.

Fremantle is expected to hold its pair of top-10 picks – No.6 and 8 – after securing the earlier selection as the main part of the Adam Cerra deal while Richmond has been keen to package up selections to move up from No.7, including in a proposed swap with Adelaide at No.4, but has yet to find a taker.

St Kilda (No.9) and West Coast (10) are also tipped to hold their selections during the Trade Period, with clubs then able to swap only selections in the weeks leading up to the draft and again during the event.

It is then, closer to the draft, that clubs will make more educated calls on pushing up or down the order with certain players in their sights.

Tom Browne on 7news tonight said:

- Essendon are leading the race to get Bobby Hill.

- Port Adelaide haven't spoken to O'Meara, his manager or Hawthorn.

- One club recruiter has said Hawthorn's wish to get first round picks for Mitchell, O'Meara, Gunston, etc is "fanciful".

- Freo likely to get Jordan Clark from Geelong for pick 22 and a future 3rd.

Does anyone think we do anything else this trade period?  If so, what?

At a minimum I would be trading 38 + 40 for something better if we can.

Those two picks are valued at 894 points combined.
Pies P27 is worth 703
WB pick 23 is worth 815

Both need to bid and would gain a points surplus by trading with us.

Pies need capital for Lipinski & Hill plus points for Daicos and with limited future picks don't think it works. If Bombers keen for Hill do they part with 11 for 26 & 28 or 38 even to get Hill with 26.

Patrick Lipinski
The Pies started negotiations with the Bulldogs by offering pick 58 for Lipinski and then upped that offer to two picks in the 50s. But the Dogs have been hoping for better for the 23-year-old, with the Pies exploring other pick swaps with Richmond and the Dogs also looking at their options. The clubs are likely to find a trade that works to avoid seeing Lipinski go through the pre-season draft. – Callum Twomey

GWS forward Bobby Hill has officially requested a trade to Essendon with one year remaining on his contract.

RICHMOND

Summary: Losing Callum Coleman-Jones and Mabior Chol is a blow for Richmond - one could’ve been OK but both of them going out the door hurts. What it has done though is bolster the Tigers’ draft hand even further - they’re a force to be reckoned with come draft night and will likely look to package picks up to move further up the order. Robbie Tarrant coming into the side suggests Damien Hardwick thinks there’s at least one more flag crack in the side. With all their draft capital, could Tom Mitchell be a target to help soften the blow of when Trent Cotchin finishes up and add to their flag credentials next year?

Richmond made monster offer for North's No.1 pick (afl site)

REVEALED: Richmond makes monster offer for North's No.1 pick

By Callum Twomey

10 October 2021

RICHMOND has made a massive play for the No.1 pick in an attempt to supercharge its rebound up the ladder next year.

However North Melbourne, like it did to Adelaide's offer for the top pick, denied the Tigers' pitch for the No.1 selection with its eyes set on young gun Jason Horne-Francis.

AFL.com.au can reveal the Tigers offered North Melbourne picks No.7, 15, 26 and Callum Coleman-Jones for North's No.1 pick during discussions over the Coleman-Jones trade.

The move would have left the Roos with four picks inside the first 26 selections as well as the 22-year-old ruck/forward, however Richmond's effort could not get North Melbourne to budge on its plan to take the club's first ever No.1 pick to the draft.

With bids to come on father-sons Nick Daicos and Sam Darcy likely inside the first five picks, Richmond's first pick is likely to finish at No.9, which would have been a significant slide back for the Roos if they accepted the deal.

The Tigers, who won the 2017, 2019-20 premierships before missing the finals this year, have not had a No.1 pick since Brett Deledio in 2004.

The clubs ended up settling on a trade on Friday that saw Coleman-Jones make his way to Arden Street along with picks 42 and 47 in this year's draft as well as a future fourth-round selection in exchange for a future second-round pick, No.40 in this year's draft and also veteran Robbie Tarrant.

I don't think we would have done that trade to get one player.

If we got 1, then we'd probably have done the trade with Adelaide - pick 1 for 4, future Adelaide 1st and future Melbourne first.

Then traded the future firsts for picks this year. Future Adelaide for one of Freos picks, and future Melbourne for maybe St Kilda or Essendon firsts.

We could have turned 7, 15 and 26 into 4, 6 and 9-11.
And you may not think I care for you

Were the Roos right to knock back the Crows and Tigers' trade offers?

What could get the deal done?
