24 May 2021RICHMONDFor all of the billing of a Friday night blockbuster, it was always going to be tough for this version of Richmond to head up to the Gabba and beat this version of Brisbane. They acquitted themselves relatively well, keeping within around a goal at halftime, before fading in the second half. They’re not in the top eight right now but it’s fine; they’ll be back.
In the votesWith many big names absent, several lesser-known Tigers stood up, with Jake Aarts (17 disposals, two goals) and Kamdyn McIntosh (19 disposals, 533 metres gained) both having their best games for the club according to the AFL Player Ratings. Noah Balta (17 disposals, seven marks, 13 intercepts) was a rock in defence while Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt each kicked three goals.
Room for improvementThe loss had nothing to do with the free kick count; the Tigers were simply beaten up in the contest. They had just 24 clearances to the Lions’ 51, including 13 to the Lions’ 35 from stoppages, along with big losses in the inside 50 and contested possessions counts. Dustin Martin had an atypically quiet night, spending plenty of time forward but failing to hit the scoreboard.
