David Teague will be an assistant coach at the Tigers from the 2022 season.

20 September 2021

David Teague will join Richmond’s coaching ranks next season, following two and a half years in the top job at Carlton.

Teague, 40, will be an assistant coach at the Tigers from the 2022 season, bolstering senior coach Damien Hardwick’s coaching panel.

A former John Nicholls Medallist, as Carlton’s best and fairest during his playing days, Teague is now a highly credentialed coach with 14 years of experience.

Teague began his coaching journey as a 26-year-old with the Northern Bullants in 2008, departing for his first AFL assistant role at West Coast in 2010.

Teague looked after the Eagles’ defence for three seasons before crossing to St Kilda in 2014 and then to the Adelaide Football Club in 2015.

As Adelaide’s forward-line coach, Teague helped the sharp-shooting Crows play finals in three consecutive seasons, including a minor premiership and Grand Final appearance in 2017.

Following that year’s AFL Grand Final, Teague returned to Victoria to be an assistant coach at the Blues. He was appointed as the caretaker coach in June 2019 before assuming the permanent role in August.

Richmond General Manager- Football Performance, Tim Livingstone said Teague would be a great addition to the Club’s coaching department.

“David is a highly skilled and experienced coach who will be of great benefit to our players and his fellow coaches,” he added.

“We are excited to have David on board and welcome him and his family to the Richmond Football Club.”

Teague said he was excited about a fresh start at Richmond.

“Coaching is my passion, and I am excited by the opportunity to get to work with a new group of players and at a new club.

“I am looking forward to getting to work this pre-season and embracing the challenge that we all have, to climb the Tigers back up the ladder in 2022.

“It is great to be involved.”

Great appointment, a common trend of clubs improving when an ex coach joins as an assistant. Us with Leppa, Port with Voss, Sydney with Pyke.

Good stuff. Welcome Tiger Teague Train

He will learn how to win premierships without cheating.  :shh

It will take some time but we can hopefully exorcise the scum cheating out of him.  :rollin

Yep. Hopefully he can help us get back that forward connection
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Wouldn't mind one of Bucks or Voss now.

Teague said he was rapt to remain involved as the Tigers look to bounce back into the finals after a disappointing end to 2021.

“Coaching is my passion, and I am excited by the opportunity to get to work with a new group of players and at a new club,” Teague said.

“I am looking forward to getting to work this pre-season and embracing the challenge that we all have, to climb the Tigers back up the ladder in 2022.”

Hardwick feels Teague will be better for his time as a senior coach at Carlton, noting he had success as a backs coach at West Coast and a forwards coach at Adelaide before taking on the Blues role.

Teague was axed by the Blues last month after an external review of their underperforming football department.

The 40-year-old had a 42 per cent winning record in two-and-a-half years as senior coach, having taken over in 2019 when Brendon Bolton departed.

Richmond will be Teague's fifth stop as an assistant coach at AFL level after he worked in similar roles with West Coast, St Kilda, Adelaide and Carlton.

"We obviously like David - he has a great knowledge," Hardwick said.

"Sometimes what happens is you can have a go at senior coaching and you can come back and learn a lot.

"I have no doubt David has, we've had some great conversations.

"It's a big win for us ... he's going to be a real breath of fresh air for us"

Hardwick said Teague would work with their forwards.

Apparently the players liked him.

With no senior coach yet, I wonder if any of them would come over?

My mates at Carlton loved Teague and definitely sad to see him go. Whether that means he will attract players I don’t know, but you could assume he will have a great impact on our playing group

Good to see. Was treated appallingly by Carlton.
