Fresh faces

The Tigers have announced first-round draft pick Josh Gibcus will debut against the Blues after impressing through the pre-season. Former Kangaroo Robbie Tarrant will be standing right alongside the youngster, also wearing yellow and black for the first time. Tom Brown is not far off a senior chance, but COVID issues have hampered his pre-season and spoiled any hopes of a round one call up. - Howard Kimber

This the official team? I don't doubt it but we normally have a Official them thread.
Nah FT, that's just torch's guessimate.

Having said that my 'Spy' says the 23 both torch and MT have plus Dow, Mansell & Parker will make the up the squad of 26 based on training today in the Captain's Run.

So that's Grimes, Prestia, Dusty, Ross, Tarrant, Baker, Riewoldt, Cotchin, Edwards, Castagna, Short, Aarts, D.Rioli, Lynch, Soldo, Balta, Nankervis, Dow, Gibcus, Bolton, Mansell, Graham, Broad, Parker, Ralphsmith, Pickett.

If there's going to be any rain then it will be interesting if that affects team selection as far as playing 3 tall forwards and 2 rucks.

Melbourne weather - Thursday 17 March

Summary
Min 18
Max 29
Possible shower.

Possible rainfall: 0 to 2 mm
Chance of any rain: 40%

Melbourne area
Humid. Partly cloudy. Medium (50%) chance of showers, most likely in the morning and early afternoon, then again at night. The chance of a thunderstorm, less likely in the afternoon. Winds north to northeasterly 25 to 35 km/h tending north to northwesterly 20 to 30 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the evening.

Edit: Jane Bunn said the storm will be hit and miss. Most areas will be dry but there's a threat of a possible storm at the 'G tomorrow night.

Tigers’ burning question: Are the dethroned premiers back to their best?

There’s been nothing but good signs from Richmond this pre-season after the side’s fall from grace in 2021. While there were departures at the end of last season, the acquisition of Robbie Tarrant has bolstered the defensive post and allowed Noah Balta to swing forward, while the likes of Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin have had some solid preparation for the season ahead. One gets the feeling there’s at least one last push in this dynasty side. Defeating Carlton to start the season would be the first step in a bid to restore the status quo and, given the optimism around the Blues, send a message to the rest of the competition.

Blues’ burning question: Will Mitch McGovern hold up when the real stuff starts?

Mitch McGovern’s pre-season in defence looked to be paying dividends given his impressive performance against Melbourne in the AAMI Community Series. His ability to play in that position effectively will be put to the test in a big way on Thursday, with Richmond’s forward line set-up of Jack Riewoldt, Tom Lynch and Noah Balta looking very ominous. Jonathan Brown told On The Couch: “I’m looking at Mitch McGovern going: ‘How didn’t this happen two years ago and sent down to defence by David Teague and the staff there to play the same position his brother has become an All-Australian dominant defender in? He looked like a real natural there, he reads the play beautifully and jumps at the ball.” How much McGovern will be able to play with freedom will be an interesting watch given the caliber of forward firepower the Tigers have; if it works, his five-year deal on an average of $800,000 could look quite a bit better.

Carlton will be pumped up at the start with a new coach and all. Need to be at least with them at quarter time so we're not chasing. The focus will be around the clearances especially centre clearances. We have an advantage in the ruck with Nank, Soldo and Balta. We need to nullify their mids and have enough forward line pressure for repeat entries to expose their backline. Obviously, we also have to take our chances in front of goal as we've done through the preseason.

I feel from Carlton what I felt from us at the start of 2017. Very exciting young team.

But we are the old cool heads. I wouldn’t be surprised if Carlton get out to a 4-5 goal lead early and we claw our way back.
Going to be a great game
