According to Balmey:

- Grimes is keen to play.
- Vlastuin likely ruled out.
- Gibcus expected to line-up down back alongside Tarrant.

Double trouble: McKay, Curnow to face Tigers, Grimes in fight to be fit

Jon Pierik
The Age
March 13, 2022 — 5.47pm

Carlton expect key forwards Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow to be fit for selection, while Richmond co-captain Dylan Grimes trained on Sunday and is desperate to take to the field in Thursday night’s blockbuster at the MCG.

The Blues have a tough call to make on Sam Docherty. The former co-captain has made a stirring return from chemotherapy, but the Blues must determine whether he would be better off having another game in the VFL earlier on Thursday. Star defender Jacob Weitering was rested from the Demons’ clash but is also set to return.

The Tigers will have to make a call on new co-captain Grimes, who had surgery last week on a fractured left thumb and was in a cast. Grimes has hopes of playing but the Tigers’ medical staff will have significant input on how wise a decision this would be so early in the new season.

Tigers’ senior advisor Neil Balme said Grimes, who trained with the thumb bandaged on Sunday, was keen to play. The Tigers’ match committee met on Sunday, but a final call had yet to be made.

“Grimes is reasonably confident but no certainty. He is very keen, but we won’t take a silly risk on him. He did a bit today [Sunday]. The doc was much more confident today than he had been, but he is still no certainty. It’s just a matter of how he recovers from it,” Balme said.

Fellow defender Nick Vlastuin is nursing a hamstring issue and will likely be ruled out.

Balme said recruit Robbie Tarrant, the former North Melbourne key defender, and star draftee Josh Gibcus were expected to line up. Gibcus, an emerging key defender, has been praised for his athleticism and development over summer, and has spent considerable time manning up veteran Jack Riewoldt.

HeraldSun is saying Graham won't return until round 2.

----------------------------

Richmond is set to unveil teenager Josh Gibcus, the club’s first top-10 pick since Nick Vlastuin (2012), and Robbie Tarrant (North Melbourne) in a refreshed back six.

Jack Graham (hamstring) will return against Greater Western Sydney in round 2 while co-captain Dylan Grimes is racing the clock to take on Carlton after thumb surgery.

But the arrival of Gibcus and Tarrant has allowed Hardwick to experiment with fullback Noah Balta forward as the Tigers look to add depth following the departures of Callum Coleman-Jones (North Melbourne) and Mabior Chol (Gold Coast).

They will buck the trend and play twin rucks as Toby Nankervis partners with Ivan Soldo, who missed the 2020 flag and all of 2021 with a knee injury.

They teamed up with great effect in the 2019 finals as the Tigers stormed to another premiership.

Liam Baker, who boasts Shane Edwards-like versatility, will join Shai Bolton and Jason Castagna in the forward line, allowing a fitter Dustin Martin to increase his midfield minutes.

Hugo Ralphsmith has also barged his way into the squad, likely to replace Bachar Houli at halfback and shine aerially.

Sacked Blues coach David Teague is now plotting Carlton’s downfall from Hardwick’s box as Richmond’s new forwards coach.

Thursday will mark 3112 days since Carlton beat Richmond, dating back to Chris Judd’s shining moment as a Blue in the 2013 elimination final.

The Tigers have won 11-straight since and enter this season hunting a fourth premiership in six years.

RICHMOND co-captain Dylan Grimes is making a late push to face Carlton on Thursday night.

Grimes last week underwent thumb surgery, putting him in doubt to play Round 1.

But the star defender moved well at training on Sunday morning, taking part in contact work and some match simulation.

Grimes’ possible inclusion would leave the Tigers’ match committee with a selection conundrum and whether they should name top-10 draftee Josh Gibcus, who’s impressed during the pre-season as a key defender, for a Round 1 debut. Nick Vlastuin is also pushing to play after being sidelined recently with a hamstring injury.

The Tigers are set to be without Jack Graham (hamstring), while triple premiership midfielder Kane Lambert (hip) could be sidelined for several months.

Richmond’s Dylan Grimes set to play in round 1 but co-captain Toby Nankervis stuck in health and safety protocols

Mark McGowan
The Australian
15 March 2022

Richmond’s triple premiership defender Dylan Grimes is poised to play in round 1 barely a week after thumb surgery, but his fellow co-captain hasn’t trained for the past week.

Toby Nankervis is due out of the AFL’s health and safety protocols on Wednesday – a day before the Tigers do battle with Carlton – but coach Damien Hardwick said he was a certain starter.

Josh Gibcus will make his AFL debut and Ivan Soldo is in for his first match since round 17, 2020, but Nick Vlastuin (hamstring) has suffered a setback.

Jack Graham (hamstring) will try to push his case at training on Tuesday, while Kane Lambert (hip) has dodged surgery but there is no return timeline for him.

“Dylan’s responded really well. We probably thought he’d be in some form of doubt for the round 1 game but he trained strongly Sunday and he’ll hopefully train strongly again (on Tuesday),” Hardwick said.

“‘Nank’ won’t train today because he’s in health and safety protocols, but he’ll be available to play on Thursday, which is a great result.

“He went in last Wednesday (but hasn’t been able to train) … so you can imagine what his house is like. He’d be running through walls and hopefully his house needs a bit of demo work.

“I’m tipping he’ll be fired up when he gets out. So, it’s going to be a challenge but I’m sure all clubs are going through it at this stage.”

Grimes’ likely availability is a boon for Richmond, given Vlastuin will miss multiple matches to start the season and with former Kangaroo Robbie Tarrant and top-10 draftee Gibcus still learning the defensive system.

But Hardwick plans to stick with swingman Noah Balta in a three-pronged tall forward line, alongside veterans Jack Riewoldt and Tom Lynch.

“We’ve trained him as a forward this year, with the eye of what he can possibly offer,” he said.

“That’s not to say that at some stages he won’t play down back but it’s always good to have options as a coach, where you can flick the magnets and push a guy forward or push a guy back when you need him.

“Bringing in Robbie Tarrant has certainly helped with a bigger body down there also, and the emergence of Josh Gibcus, our first-round pick, has allowed us to move a few things around.”

Hardwick remains bullish about the Tigers’ season prospects despite missing finals last year but acknowledged they had some catching up to do.

“Our expectations are high, so we expect to play some good footy for a long period of time, but there are some sides that have gone past us,” he said.

“We’ve got to make sure we continue to play our very best footy and put our best foot forward.

“The greatest thing about an AFL coach and all coaches is you’re always trying to be the underdog – and we are that this year, so that’s our challenge.”

I know some people don't rate him but no Kmac is a big loss on a wing as he's a two way runner. So who comes in as a winger? Pickett?  :-\

If Grimes plays then it's as a KPD as it involves less tacking than playing on a small forward.

My current guess at our 22 for round 1:

B:   Broad                          Grimes                 Gibcus
HB: Short                           Tarrant                 D.Rioli
C:   Edwards                      Prestia                  Pickett
HF:  Bolton                         Balta                    Baker
F:  Castagna                       Lynch                 Riewoldt
R: Nankervis                     Cotchin                  Martin
Int: Soldo   Graham    Ralphsmith      Ross

23rd man sub:  Aarts

Injured: Vlastuin, Lambert, McIntosh.

Once again I wouldn't have Aarts in the 23 but I think Dimma will pick him. I would rather Brown or Dow.

If Grimes doesn't come up then I'd expect Balta will go back (he trained today with the backs) and we bring in another mid/small.

That’s a cracking forward line
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Interestingly the club and new recruits rate McIntosh highly as a gut running  player who sacrifices his own game for the benefit of the club, let’s see who the runners are without Macca and Lambert

Hmmm the anticipation is building !!
I actually haven’t been this excited since the start of 2017 tbh.
Even though we have retained a lot of players, there are also many changes.
Baker and balta up forward.
Tarrant and gibcus down back.
2 new captains.
Cotchin looking refreshed already.
Teague’s influence.
Soldo looking surprisingly impactful.

Interested to see how the likes of Bolton, Graham, Balta progress this year because they are the future.
Also RCD, Sonsie, Brown.
Want to see Stack return to that great form he had. Watched that bump on viney the other day.. never gets old.

I think Tom Lynch is also due for a huge year.
Plenty to be excited about.

GO TIGES.

Team looks good.

I wanted to see Mansell maybe.

Otherwise very excited to see a taller forward line and backline, plus Bolton + Baker + Edwards to lock the ball in F50.
