Melbourne are being Richmonded tonight.  8 50 metre penalties against Melbourne for time wasting and gobbing off.
I see why the AFL are doing it but it's too much.  I've umpired, I know what it's like but simply shaking your head or saying your joking doesn't deserve 50m. 
Perhaps a 25m penalty more appropriate

I can understand them wanting to remove verbal abuse and over the top demonstrative behaviour towards umpires. No one should have to put up with that at any level. However, imagine copping a 50 and losing a GF due to simply chuckling to yourself . Once again the AFL overreacts and only makes the problem worse with rules and interpretations that only frustrate fans even more. Of course, it's the umps that will cop the backlash which defeats the purpose of it all.


ps. Speaking of the umps, how about Cripps being allowed to run a mile without bouncing for one of his goals  .

It will be Carlton for finals or even premiers after tonight's game against Melbourne. 
I must say they look pretty good.

Another 5 minutes and they may have been run over but all up Carlton turned up to play as if it was a H&A game while Melbourne weren't mentally switched on especially in the first half. They were dropping simple marks

Good for us in a way. Carlton revealed many of their cards last night before we play them in round 1. They've copied our 2017 forward line with 3 quicks small forwards at the feet of a tall. They smashed Melbourne in the clearances via Cripps, Kennedy, Hewett and Cerra. So we need to counter that. McGovern is being used this year as their loose man in defence and needs to be manned or pressured as his kicking can be iffy as were other Carlton backs. All up they played on quickly using speed of foot and handball receives.

The Stand rule encourages flooding. Another SHocking decision.

Carlton went with a high press in the first half as they applied forward pressure but once McKay and small forward Durdin (inj) went off at half-time and Melbourne were making a comeback the Blues did push numbers back. I hate Carlton but their workrate last night to support each other and their two way running was excellent.

In the guts, I noticed Hewett plays the defensive backstop role at centrebounces, Cripps stands to the side and Kennedy/Cerra stand forward of the centre circle. Whoever out of Cripps and Kennedy/Cerra gets first hands to the footy will try to get a forward handball to the other who will position themself just defensive side running past to receive the handpass. If that's blocked they look for Hewett in space. I noticed Oliver went ballhunting so that left Melbourne's defensive side at the centrebounce open to exploit with this forward handpass by Carlton. Protecting the defensive side at stoppages and the post-clearance contest was something we fell away badly at doing last year. So we will need to be wary of the Blues mids trying this against us. Whoever is standing defensive side of the centre circle can't be sucked into the initial contest or we'll just give up centre clearance after centre clearance. If can get back to 2017-2020 of nullifying the clearances then we'll have a good chance of winning as Carlton's defence is still suspect.

I'd take a guess this is the Carlton line-up for round 1.

IMO we look a bit suspect in key defence like this. Taking a big chance playing one of an unexperienced Gibcus or Miller on one of their talls (could go for the experienced Grimes but we like him in an interceptor role). Rather Balta line-up in defence and someone else plays forward and makes McGovern and his dodgy kicking accountable to force turnovers.

I'm also a bit concerned going too tall will make us too slow once the ball hits the ground in our F50 and on defensive transition. Geelong cleared the ball from end to end far too easily in the praccy match.

I think he looks very promising. Dekoning is just 22 only played 22 games and has tracked along far better than say CC-J imo.
If he was at Richmond you would be singing his praises and talking him up as a promising young player i would guess.

Voss imo will treat this year as another DEVELOPMENT YR  for him. His size and athletic ability along with more maturity 22yrs instead of just 19 and a reasonable amount of games behind him  says you have to show him just a bit of respect.

Imo he should play instead of Silvagni 194/?? who is  a bit meh imo. Like us Carlton have their undeserving favorite sons who get games i suppose.

McKay 204/104 at f/f C Curnow 192/94 at chf and DeKoning 203/102  in a fwd pocket giving Pittonet a chop out in the ruck would make for very difficult match ups indeed. they may even play all 4.

I would match them up with Tarrant 196/96 to McKay , Grimes 193/92 to Curnow and Miller 198/98 to DeKoning.

Injury watch: Who is racing the clock to be fit for round one?

The Tigers received a blow ahead of round one with co-captain Dylan Grimes in doubt for the Carlton clash next week after undergoing surgery to repair a thumb ligament injury sustained in the AAMI Community Series clash with Hawthorn. They will be without gun midfielder Kane Lambert, who could be a long-term absence as he deals with his hip injury, while Jack Graham remains touch-and-go for the start of the season due to a summer hit with problems including with his back, hip and hamstring. Nick Vlastuin is expected to be ready for round one despite a hamstring niggle, while younger midfielder Riley Collier-Dawkins has overcome sore ribs. Draftee Sam Banks has been battling a quad problem across the pre-season but has rejoined training recently and will be eyeing games soon.

Dimma on Talking Tigers:

* We'll be playing two rucks in both Nank and Soldo.

* No guarantee Balta will play forward in round 1.

* Carrying 5 talls at the moment. Deciding whether to go with that or play one less and Dusty plays more forward.

* Gibcus thereabouts for round 1 selection.

* Richo asked if Ralphsmith was a smokey for round 1 and Dimma replied "yes, he'll be thereabouts for round 1".

* Graham probably touch and go for round 1. Will definitely be available for round 2. We want to make sure he plays round 2 and onwards so we don't want to push him too early and he gets re-injured.


ps. Richo said he's heard they're expecting a crowd of 85k.

With outs like Grimes, Lambert, graham, vlastuin maybe then I'd expect to see the likes of Gibcus (move Balta forward, Dusty to mid), Ralph etc.

It's only R1 anyway...
