Reduced from severe grading to high impact.

Only ended up coping 3. Take it and run.

They must've found out we're trading him.... :shh

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

‘Can’t be allowed to stand’: AFL hosts unload after shock Tribunal finding over ‘king hit’

Fox Sports
August 22nd, 2023 9:27 pm

Richmond young gun Tyler Sonsie has escaped with a three-match ban for an ugly off-the-ball strike at VFL level on Sunday.

With his side leading by two goals late in the match, Sonsie appeared to lose his cool and lash out at North Melbourne opponent Tom Cappellari.

Vision shows the duo tangle over the boundary line in the match at the Swinburne Centre in Melbourne before Sonsie reacts.

Getting to his feet, Sonsie goes back at Cappellari and appears to land a blow to the chin of the Roo.

Cappellari is then seen clutching at his face on the turf.

The incident was graded intentional conduct with severe impact and high contact.

At the VFL Tribunal on Tuesday night, Sonsie pleaded guilty to striking, but successfully argued severe impact down to high.

That would usually result in a four-match sanction, but Sonsie’s guilty plea to the charge of striking meant the sanction was reduced to three matches.

It was a penalty dubbed “woefully inadequate” by AFL 360 co-host Gerard Whateley on Tuesday night and one that “can’t be allowed to stand”.

Co-host Mark Robinson agreed, labelling the decision “rubbish”.

“There’s some words being exchanged, but you’re not expecting someone ... you can’t walk up to a player and punch him in the face like that,” he said.

“James Sicily got three weeks for a tackle in an act of play. Whether you agree with it or not, we’re starting to get our heads around it but that (Sonsie’s strike) is a blatant act of violence on the football field.

“We have just been smashing two s***heads for bashing up Jack Ziebell and we have the same violence on the field and we get a three week suspension.

“I get so frustrated with the inconsistency of footy and the inconsistency of life.”

Well the media witch hunt has worked beautifully for the AFL's deflection campaign.  The VFL are appealing the tribunal decision.

Not ideal but just let it go.

I was at a game vs Hawthorn, brereton punched Tony Free in the back of the head 40m away from play, broke Tony’s jaw, he never played again.
That was a king hit

He stiff armed him to the head when Freezer was coming in to tackle a Hawk player. Got 8 weeks.

VFL to appeal Tyler Sonsie tribunal decision

The Victorian Football League (VFL) wishes to advise that it today notified the VFL Appeal Board and the Richmond Football Club that it would appeal the three-game suspension imposed on Richmond’s Tyler Sonsie for striking in last weekend’s Round 22 VFL match.

The VFL Match Review Panel initially graded the incident as intentional conduct, severe impact and high contact.

Because the incident was graded as severe impact, it was sent directly to the VFL Tribunal with a base sanction of 5+ matches in accordance with the classification.

The VFL Tribunal found that the incident constituted high impact (downgraded from severe), intentional conduct and high contact, which carries a base sanction of a four- match suspension.

The sanction was reduced to a three-match suspension based on Sonsie’s early guilty plea to that classification.

The VFL will appeal the three-game suspension on the grounds that:

(A) the decision involved an error of law that had a material impact on the Tribunal’s decision;

(B) the decision was so unreasonable that no Controlling Body or Tribunal acting reasonably could have come to that decision having regard to the evidence before it;

(C) the classification of the Reportable Offence or Policy Breach or other conduct (as applicable) was manifestly excessive or inadequate.

The appeal will be heard at 5:00pm on Monday, August 28.

That was Round 19, 1994. Freezer missed the next 4 weeks but made it back for the final round of that season.

Tearing his ACL in Round 5, 1995 ended his career. Came back for one game the following year but the knee wasn't right and he never played again  :(.
