Sources insist Geelong is invested in trading for both Hopper and Grundy in a year they could also win the premiership.

GIANTS KEEN TO RETAIN RICHMOND, COLLINGWOOD, GEELONG TARGETS TARANTO AND HOPPER

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
24 August 2022

GWS Giants’ GM of Football Jason McCartney has commented on two key players who are continually being linked with a move away from the club.

Star Giants midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are the pair who could potentially be out the door this year.

Taranto, 24, is out of contract and being linked to both Richmond and Collingwood, while Hopper, 25, is being earmarked for a shift to Geelong.

McCartney admits GWS would love to retain both on-ballers and the job is now in front of the club and new coach Adam Kingsley to make that the case.

Does McCartney see both those players staying with the Giants in 2023?

“It’s hard to answer, but Tim’s easy, Tim’s out of contract,” McCartney said on SEN Breakfast.

“So he’s got a call to make. We would love to retain Tim. Tim has been a wonderful player for our club over the last six years.

“He was a best and fairest winner in a Grand Final year (2019), so we’d love to be able to retain Tim. Obviously the opportunity for him to speak with the new coach in Adam Kingsley over the next few days will be important.

“But Jacob is contracted and that will be something we’ll need to sit down with Jacob and work through with his management, whether it’s retaining (him) and playing a really important role in our midfield or is he keen to explore some opportunities elsewhere.

“Those conversations have been with management all year, but with the players we just finished some medical reviews and some reviews of their season.

“Those in-depth contract conversations haven’t been had directly with the players as yet.”

McCartney also commented on the club’s proposed ‘salary cap dump’ which includes the likes of Taranto and Hopper exiting.

St Kilda is chasing Collingwood free agent Jordan De Goey with soon-to-be CEO Simon Lethlean confirming the board had ticked off the move.

Port Adelaide midfielder Karl Amon has nominated Hawthorn as his next home from 2023.

Edit:

Port Adelaide has registered interest in Junior (Willie) Rioli.

North Melbourne has also expressed interest in Rioli, with the Roos in the market to add to their forward line scoring power. Rioli has links in Victoria, too, having boarded at Scotch College during his school days before heading to the SANFL.

West Coast has remained confident Rioli will stay at the club, with coach Adam Simpson on Friday telling SEN the Eagles were "hoping we can get it done in the next few weeks" and re-sign the brilliant goalkicker.

The Dimma briefing was probably the best, most informative & enjoyable ‘non-football’ hour I’ve spent at Richmond.
Like being at a team meeting that we’ve only seen on video before. Made one very interesting comment on a potential recruit.

He didn’t mention names but he met with someone the night before who wanted to come to Richmond because of who we are off field & the way we do things like the Hurley situation as much as on. The way he spoke, I think it was someone other than Taranto who’s been public knowledge

Foxsports Q&A trade talk this arvo:

Q. When will Taranto announce his intentions?

David Zita: I think we will know very soon, tipping this week.

Q. Thinking Richmond for Taranto?

David Zita: I think Richmond is the one at this stage, Collingwood focused on McStay, Hill and potential Grundy trade.

Q: Will Hopper be out of GWS or the new coach wanting to keep him?

David Zita: I think he and Taranto will both go but at the very least one won't be there next year. Giants happy to clear up cap space as part of a mini reset under Kingsley.

Q: Where does Geelong keep finding this extra cash?

David Zita: Players don't get paid overs there and they've had a steady stream of veteran retirements that means money can be shifted around on deals for recruits etc. Richmond doing similar!

-------------------------------

RICHMOND

Players that could leave

The enigma remains Dustin Martin. There have been countless showings of faith in Martin and a belief he will see out at least the next year of his current deal, which expires at the end of 2024. Still, we’ve seen far stranger things transpire in trade periods, so there’s always a chance something changes before that period is out. Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt are yet to re-sign, but they won’t play elsewhere.

Players that could arrive

Tim Taranto could very well be in the yellow and black jumper next year as he weighs up his future at Greater Western Sydney. He’s the major watch this space player for the Tigers, who aren’t linked to a stack of players this off-season.

Who’s already gone

Josh Caddy (retired), Kane Lambert (retired), Matthew Parker (delisted), Shane Edwards (retired)

Draft picks

12, 19 (via North Melbourne), 30, 84

Five off-season targets for EVERY AFL club: Richmond

Who could the Tigers add to their next wave of young talent?

Jack Jovanovski
zerohanger.con
August 30, 2022 - 4:09PM

Richmond, off the back of an impressive bounce-back 2022 season, is preparing to embark on a fifth finals campaign in six seasons; symbolic of the club's list management successes over the course of the past decade.

Acquiring the likes of Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis, Josh Caddy and Tom Lynch in recent off-seasons has helped spur the Tigers to premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020, and they will hope future acquisitions can help aid further flag runs in the years to come.

Richmond signed lockdown defender Robbie Tarrant this past off-season and he has proven very valuable to the Tigers' cause this season, whether he's been among Richmond's best 22 or merely acting as quality defensive depth.

The Tigers are likely to be players during the upcoming trade and free agency period, as there will be holes to fill left by the likes of retiring stalwarts Shane Edwards along with the aforementioned Caddy, and veteran superstars Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt edging increasingly closer to the end of their playing days.

All of that being said, we've compiled a list, in no particular order, of five targets that Richmond could target this off-season to help bolster its 2023 playing list.

1. Tim Taranto (GWS Giants)

The Tigers' reported pursuit of GWS' Taranto has gained steam in recent days, with league insider Tom Browne reporting Collingwood has cooled its interest in the Giants midfielder, perhaps as a result of Taranto beginning to lean towards joining Richmond.

An acquisition of Taranto would indubitably boost the Tigers' midfield stocks, adding another big-bodied presence alongside contested-ball merchant, Dion Prestia.

Taranto has also demonstrated his ability to go forward and kick majors throughout his six years in the AFL, posting a career average of 0.4 goals per game despite predominantly damaging the opposition through the middle of the ground.

As the 24-year-old Sandringham Dragons product is a non-free-agent, Richmond officials will seek to strike a trade agreement with the GWS hierarchy, with a first-round draft selection likely to be the minimum compensation for a player of Taranto's quality.

2. Rory Lobb (Fremantle)

Riewoldt's retirement, as previously mentioned, is imminent. Whether its imminence is the conclusion of this year's finals series or the end of next season, Riewoldt's days are numbered.

The Tigers boast another spearhead forward by the name of Tom J. Lynch, but it could be argued he can't do it all on his own, which would spark a need for another key forward.

In 2022, Lobb has showcased his impressive high-marking tendencies, as well as a knack for snagging goals from improbable angles. In short, he's had a career-best year and, rightly, will be high in demand come the free agency and trade period.

Lobb has been rumoured to be heading to The Kennel to play for the Bulldogs next season, but a late Richmond charge cannot be ruled out.

Either way, Lobb is not out of contract until next season, meaning an exchange would need to be agreed upon by both sides, with the Tigers possessing the necessary draft capital.

3. Darcy MacPherson (Gold Coast Suns)

It's no secret the Tigers adore small forwards. Their premiership teams of 2017-20 were built off the back of forward pressure applied by the likes of Daniel Rioli, Jason Castagna and Dan Butler.

Now, the next wave of Richmond small forwards has arrived in the form of promising father-son prospect Maurice Rioli Jr. and academy selection Noah Cumberland.

Gold Coast's MacPherson, currently out of contract but a non-free-agent, fits the Richmond pressure-small-forward mould.

The Suns, who have bigger fish to fry in terms of player retention, are unlikely to drive a hard bargain for the 24-year-old Northern Knights product, who has been a fringe best-22 player throughout the majority of his time on the Sunshine Coast.

If nothing more, MacPherson would provide Damien Hardwick with adequate depth in the forward half, especially as the likes of Rioli Jr. and Cumberland continue on their roads of development.

As seen with Liam Baker, the Tigers could get the most out of the hard-nosed MacPherson across multiple positions.

4. Tom Green (GWS Giants)

It would appear unlikely, if reports are correct, but if Collingwood was to land Taranto, the Tigers might look to pursue a similar Giants midfielder by the name of Tom Green.

The 21-year-old Green has Tigerland pedigree, with his grandfather, Michael, a four-time premiership hero and member of the club's Team of the Century.

However, unlike Taranto, Green is under contract at the Giants for the 2023 season, meaning the likelihood of Richmond being able to strike a trade this off-season is low, unless Green desperately wants out.

GWS' coaching situation - now settled, having just hired Richmond midfield assistant Adam Kingsley to take the reins - may sway Green to stay in New South Wales a while longer.

5. Jackson Nelson (West Coast Eagles)

Nelson, having served eight years in the league, is currently an unrestricted free agent, meaning he could depart the West Coast Eagles this year without any resistance.

Nelson played his junior football in Victoria, so a move home shouldn't be an unexpected development.

Throughout his time playing for the Eagles, Nelson has provided hardness at the contest and a ferocious attack on the ball, qualities every AFL coach adores.

As seasoned Tigers Marlion Pickett and Kamdyn McIntosh enter the twilight years of their careers, there may soon be openings at the wing position for somebody such as Nelson, who may not want to spend his prime years at the rebuilding Eagles.

Taranto yes please

Lobby no

Green if we can yes

MacPherson and Nelson would cost nothing so free hits but nothing to get excited about. Mac at least a good size and likes a tackle

Tom Mitchell is exploring a trade away from Hawthorn.

Collingwood among clubs made aware of the situation. Pies had been looking at Tim Taranto but he's more likely at Richmond.

The Hawks trying to get mins into Ward/Newcombe/Worpel + have an interest in GWS 20yo Tanner Bruhn

Sam McClure said he "thinks" Hopper wants to play for a big Melbourne club and Hopper is thinking very heavily about Richmond. Hopper also has a big offer from Geelong.

McClure added that if Dusty leaves then Richmond can afford both Taranto and Hopper. Tigers can afford only one of them if Dusty stays.

Gold Coast losing Rankine means they have now salary cap space so Dusty is more gettable now than a month ago.

Would anybody entertain a trade for Tom Mitchell?

Don't jump down my throat, hear me out - because yes I don't rate him as 'highly damaging' but IMO he's a decent inside extractor.

If he was gettable for our pick 30 (likely to slide to at least 35) and could be re-negotiated to say a 3 year deal on 400-450/year, would it be worth considering?

He's 30 in May so should have 2-3 solid years in him at least but I guess he probably doesn't fit our age profile unless we think we're going to challenge again in those years.

Not often we find diamonds around pick 35 but at least Mitchell could be a solid contributor for 40-60 games if we're having another crack.

Geelong are a chance for Grundy?

Why don't the media ever question how it is even possible.

They don't have draft picks, they shouldn't have cap space, they wouldn't trade any of their kids. I don't get it.

Lots of their players are veterans whose wages are partially outside the cap I believe. Although I think the AFL was looking to reduce this?

Personally I'd love RFC to go after Grundy if Collingwood is prepared to pay $300k of his wage as reported. Not sure how we could do it without moving on someone like Dusty, but TBH we have figured out how to win without Dusty this year and if he wants to go I am open to it.

Wages out:
Dusty
Edwards
Caddy
Lambert
Parker (minimal coin obviously)
Should be over $2million there

Wages in:
Taranto $700k
Grundy $700k
Bolton contract/pay rise

DUSTY A KEY SHAPER OF TRADE PERIOD

Richmond star Dustin Martin could be “the linchpin” of the upcoming trade period, according to Nine reporter Sam McClure.

Martin has two years to run on a contract with Richmond worth over $1 million, but there have been reports throughout the year the 31-year-old is weighing up a potential move interstate at season’s end.

Speaking on Channel Nine’s Footy Classified, McClure said Martin “could stay at Richmond, but I think he’s going to have to be convinced to do that”, while explaining the ramifications of a potential move.

“He now looms, this man, as the linchpin I think for what is going to happen in the trade period,” he said.

“We know he’s on $1.3 million for the next two seasons, he’s been umming and ahhing, he’s been telling people that he doesn’t love football anymore, maybe he needs a change of location, a change of geography.”

Greater Western Sydney pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are “both going” to leave, according to McClure, meaning a Martin departure could clear up sufficient cap space for the Tigers to secure both players.

Geelong is also interested in Hopper, with McClure saying the Cats were now “out of the race for Jordan De Goey”, while Gold Coast’s pending loss of Izak Rankine to Adelaide means Martin “is far more gettable than he was a month ago” from a salary cap point of view for the Suns.

Aaron Francis wants a trade from Essendon. He could be good key defender depth seeing as we have virtually none. I recall watching him play some decent games in the backline too. Would trade Castagna for him in a heart beat
