Hopper is a dump 100%

It 100% isn’t. It’s an inability to match a contract offer Richmond has made that in turn helps them shed salary. That’s not a dump at all.

It helps them dump him a year early that's all.

Chances are he'd have been shopped around if we hadn't asked the question. He's surplus to their needs, coming off injury, on decent coin and they're likely to get a good deal for him being contracted next year.

Otherwise they may as well keep him and hold him to his contract but they simply won't. They need the cap space.

Richmond’s targeted response to critics over ‘risky’ seven-year deals for Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper

James Brien
24ssports.com/7news
28 September 2022

Richmond boss Brendon Gale has hit back at questions about the reported seven-year deals to GWS Giants midfielders Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, telling 7NEWS: “If you don’t take risks, you can’t advance.”

The teammates will join the Tigers in the AFL trade period, although their status as unsigned but not a free agent (Taranto) and scheduled for 2023 at GWS (Hopper) will complicate matters.

Richmond holds the No. 12, No. 19 and No. 30 picks in this year’s draft and will likely need to cough up next year’s first-round pick — and possibly a player — to close the deals.

However, with negotiations yet to officially begin, the reported lengthy contract offers – rumored to have combined annual wages of up to $1.5 million – have become the main subject of speculation.

Hopper will turn 26 in February and would leave the next few months of his contract before his 33rd birthday, while Taranto will turn 25 in January and would be close to 32 when his contract ends.

Premiership player Kane Cornes said the bids were “not the most responsible move by Richmond” and argued they prioritized Damien Hardwick’s quest for a fourth flag over anything else.

He likened it to Alastair Clarkson leaving a Hawthorn side out of the Premiership window when their top-up recruits Jaeger O’Meara, Tom Mitchell and Chad Wingard were still on the books.

Midfield pair O’Meara and Mitchell joined the Hawks a year after their last flag, 12 months ahead of Richmond’s schedule for Hopper and Taranto.

“That won’t be Damien Hardwick’s problem. It is very unlikely that he will coach Richmond for 20 years,” Cornes said on SEN this month.

Speaking to 7NEWS Melbourne at the Tigers’ awards night on Tuesday, Chief Executive Brendon Gale backed the club’s “due diligence” – and its history – on long-term offers for recruits.

“We looked at Dion Prestia a few years ago, these players in the 24, 25 age group, we all have expectations that they will play for many years to come,” he said.

“So there is a risk with all players, but if you don’t take a risk you don’t progress. We think these are reasonable risks as things stand.”

Prestia joined Richmond on a five-year contract from Gold Coast in 2016, aged 24, when players other than Lance Franklin were far less likely to receive such long-term offers.

Injuries have limited Prestia at times, but he became a triple-premiership player with a year on his original contract and was rewarded with a three-year extension in early 2021, running until he was 32.

Gale, meanwhile, did not offer an expected time frame to secure Hopper and Taranto during the eight-day trading period, but expressed confidence in their ability to close the deals.

“Like any team, after seeing Geelong (win the grand finals) we have work to do, they’ve been very impressive so we’re working very hard to find areas to improve our list,” he told 7NEWS.

“There was speculation, but we still have a lot to do. They are players that we believe can make us better as a football team. I’ll leave that and we’ll just be patient.

“I think we have a proven track record of making deals that are fair to everyone and we just keep going, so I’m confident that will get resolved.”

Poor form being so critical of the most successful club boss around.

Anyway if things don't pan out we're allowed to dump their salaries now  :lol

The 7-year contracts will be structured so the bulk of the cash will be paid in the middle years once Dusty and Lynch's current contracts have ceased. Then they tail off again so Taranto and Hopper will be on lower salaries when they are both 32 years old. $750k p.a. will be not high anyway in seven years time given the increasing salary cap.

You have to remember that Hopper is a salary dump and we're doing them a favour otherwise he'd be staying.
I'm thinking 2 firsts plus a player or pick 30 get a this done.

Hopper isn’t a salary dump.

Giants would prefer to keep him.

Whilst it does help there salary situation, there are many ways to reduce cap, made easier by the AFL signing off on picks + salary for lower pick salary dump trades for this trade period..

Again, trading Hopper helps GWS, but they’re not the ones pushing Hopper out the door like Pies are with Grundy and also did with Treloar.

Clearly they want him off the books.  Not sure what else you call it?  If they'd prefer to keep him, he's under contract so they can and trade out others.

They don’t ‘clearly’ want him off the books. Where is it clearly stated that’s the case?

In contrast you have Collingwood pushing Grundy out the door. Hawks with Mitchell. Gold Coast doing the same with Bowes.

It actually makes more sense for the Giants to keep him, and let him walk in free agency next season as the chances of it being a first round compensation pick tied to a (likely) top end pick will be better than what RFC can offer.

Again, it helps GWS to move from Hopper, but it isn’t their only option.

This is like any other trade for an in contract player. A team has made an offer that the current contract holder can’t match. They aren’t pushing him out the door.

Don’t see how hopper is any different to the others you have named. None of those players, their clubs or their management have come out and said they are looking to move them on, it’s just been heavily reported in the media the same as with hopper. The Tom Mitchell comparison is a poor one too. Hawks aren’t in salary cap trouble like the giants, they just see a 30+ year old with diminishing performances and market value that they’d much prefer to move on since they are right in the middle of a rebuild and would prefer to play one of their kids. They would have no trouble paying his salary next season.

Jack Gunston has played his last game at Hawthorn after telling the club he intends to join Brisbane as a free agent.

Fair point in regards to Mitchell, think you’re spot on as to why Hawthorn are moving from him. I agree with you that my use of him as a comparison is a poor one.

In relation to Grundy, it’s been widely reported that Grundy wants to stay at Collingwood, but Pies want him out to bring in all the other players they’re targeting this off-season. To move him, Pies will pay some of his salary.

In relation to Bowes, the fact that the Suns are willing to include a high FRP to facilitate a deal is classic contract dumping actions.

GWS aren’t doing either of the above with Hopper. In fact, if I was the Giants I’d be saying to Richmond we could attach one of the many picks we will be getting this off-season and move on from someone like Haynes. Point being, I don’t think that the Giants will discount the price of Hopper too much because of their salary situation.

Agree to disagree. I see the Grundy and hopper situation as very similar in principal just not as high profile as Grundy is being paid more, is a more recognised ‘star’ and plays for Collingwood so the media beat up is more intense and frequent. I’ve heard numerous articles basically saying the same about both in that their preference in an ideal world would be to stay at their current club but that their clubs need to move them on for mismanaging their cap so the players and their management have taken it upon themselves to talk to rival clubs.

In terms of trade value, I don’t think he is worth 2 first rounders whether the club is pushing him out or not. We have picks 12, 19, 30 and a future first to deal currently and I’m of the opinion if we can grab both players while holding 1 of those 4 picks (ideally 19 or the future first) then we’ve done very well.

From David Zita's live trade talk this arvo on the Foxsports website:

Q: jack graham and pick 12 for pick 8 and a future second from port sound fair?

Zita: Heard far worse trade proposals than that one, don't mind it

Q: Is the Taranto/hopper a done deal? Seems like Tigers will have to pay alot

Zita: Both will get done I think Blueboy, will be a lot to pay but the Tigers have the draft capital to make it happen

Q: Do you think GWS will want Draft picks for Taranto/Hopper or will players be used too? Soldo has been thrown up but what about an Aarts/Castanga to replace Hill?

Zita: They're happy to go hard at the draft, mini-reset of sorts under Kinglsey, clearing cap space and giving Kingsley a clear runway

Q: What will it take for Port to lure Jack Graham to Alberton? Could the Amon compo pick be enough? And how does the Rioli deal go down - will Port need to trade for picks?

Zita: Believe the compo pick will be second round and that wont be enough for Port to get Graham. More likely to get Rioli deal going than it is Amon

Q: What day do you expect the Hopper and Taranto deals to be completed?

Zita: Always a dangerous game this one... I reckon start of second week.

"We can tell you today that the Essendon Footy Club hasn't given up hope on getting into the conversation with Jordan De Goey."

- Damian Barrett

"I still feel that he will wade through these clauses in the contract and stay.

We keep saying in this business though, until the signature is on the line, it's yet to be official."

It was mentioned about a month ago that they had to shed about 1 million+ from next years cap so they set about achieving this in a methodical way.

By releasing this information so far out it has enabled them to put players up for trade enabling prospective suitors to plan towards this eventuality.

It is still a salary dump but a well planned one.
