State of Origin [merged]
« on: May 23, 2006, 02:22:18 AM »
Bringing back State of Origin has been brought up again. Lyon wants a Vic vs the Rest game at the 'G - Link.

Use to love seeing the Flea strut his stuff in the dark years of the late 80s but now I don't want to risk injury to any of our young guys.

Thoughts?

I was never a fan of State of Origin footy. Give me a Tiger premiership, finals appearance or even a win over a rival any day. ;D

I don't even like that International Rules thing they have every year - just don't see the point :-\

Have never really understood the passion they have for State of Origin in the NRL  :help

However having said that I am going the Rugby State of Origin at Telstra in July so maybe I will learn ;D

State of Origin (NRL) is huge.  Everyone is divided, everywhere you go.  Even at my ballroom dancing lesson the other week they were going on about who was going to win.  Everyone in my household is born in a different State - myself = Vic, Hubby = S.A., Mini-me = Qld and my son is NSW.    I'm only interested in the final score - the actual game is quite boring.

I agree with MT on the possibility of injury to key personell, You could have a minimum selection quota of say 4 to 6 players that must come from the SANFL, WAFL, NSW/ACT/QLD AFL and the VFL. This would give fringe players a chance to impress on the big stage in a bit to try and make it to the AFL.
As far as the format goes, it may work the way the Americans do it. Have an Eastern Zone (Vics v Allies) and a Western Zone (WA v SA). Both games played on say a wednesday night and the winners of each zone play each other in the Final a fortnight later on a day to be determined. (maybe the weekend of the mid season break)
That way you only need to set aside two days in the whole season.

Well thats my 2 cents worth anyway. (Not that it's worth that. ;D)

State of Origin is back in the spotlight with Jonathan Brown saying he wants it back. The AFL had sought input from all 16 club captains at the start of the season on the Origin concept and it got a positive response.

Richmond's Kane Johnson said he would be unlikely to play because of the risk of injury. Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd said he would only play during the mid-season break, while Johnson believes the pre-season is more suitable.

LOL CUB. I think that would go for every Tiger  :-\.

Last night's NRL SOO was great but the Storm have lost two players to injury. One out for the season. That's why I'm against it if Richmond players are involved. Why risk your best players.

Yea it's a different culture the roaches and the toads really hate each other, wheras in footy everyone just hates Victoria.

I liked origin and it was great to see all the best players in one team, but if it were to be of detriment to Richmond or our chances of a flag - Umm no way hosie

The thing with the NRL State of Origin, injuries aside, is that the players will then turn around a few days later and play for their respective clubs.  So some of them are playing 3 games in a matter of a week.  And the AFL guys whinge about a couple of hours flying to Perth!

The NRL guys playing 2 games in 3 days is an incredible effort but it's harder in Aussie rules' players to back up as the games go for 120 minutes compared to 80.
