Ch 7 news tonight reckons it'll be Victoria vs Allies and played in February. Apparently Dangerfield and Pendlebury have already put their hand up to play.

SEN has picked 4 Tigers in their sides: Dusty, Houli and Lynch for Victoria and Jack for the "Dream Team".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the AFL reportedly considering a State of Origin game in late February to help raise money for bushfire relief, the question turns to what the teams would look like

The Herald Sun are suggesting it will only be one match and set at Marvel Stadium, which likely means it will be Victoria versus the Dream Team, rather than the traditional matchups.

Would love to see it personally. Really enjoyed the 2008 game when Foley tore it up.

This is something the NRL does much better than the AFL (and trades too).

Me too. Foley did us proud that night.

I tend to disagree with the NRL do it better crap. They have little to no club-fan connection, so the state of origin fills in as the pinnacle for that sport. Plus there's only 2 states in the whole country that really give a crap. AFL actually stands as the premier winter code in 4 States, and is widely played and followed in all the other states and territories.

In any case, I think its a great idea. Will definitely tune in, but I'm just worried about Dusty.

AFL confirm State of Origin match - Feb 28 @ Marvel Stadium (afl site)
« Reply #50 on: January 09, 2020, 02:16:03 PM »
Well it's official.

Dimma will be Victoria's coach.

Maximum 3 players per club can be picked to play.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Victoria will play an All Stars line-up on Friday February 28, with money raised to boost a Community Relief Fund set-up by the AFL to help rebuild football facilities ripped apart by the national crisis.

Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick will lead the Victorians and Sydney counterpart John Longmire will coach the All Stars in the match to be staged at Marvel Stadium.

The AFL ($1.35m) – in association with the clubs ($900,000) and AFL Players Association ($250,000) – have committed a $2.5million donation.

A total of $1m will provide immediate emergency assistance through the Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery fund. An additional $1.5m will kickstart the Community Relief Fund for grassroots facilities.

The match – to be played during the second weekend of the pre-season Marsh Community Series – will see players selected in a process still to be determined.

There will be a maximum of three players per AFL club eligible to take part in the match to ensure minimal disruption to club's pre-season plans just 20 days before round one.

The three players from your club who could be selected for State of Origin

By SEN
10 Jan 2020

Dustin Martin (Victoria)
Tom Lynch (Victoria)
Jack Riewoldt (All Stars)

Dustin Martin an absolute lock for Victoria's midfield and as a resting forward. Tom Lynch would most likely start at full-forward for the Big V. Dylan Grimes narrowly missed out with Jack Riewoldt’s excitement factor necessary inside forward 50 for the All Stars.

Mate v mate: How the Vic v All Stars teams will be picked

By Mitch Cleary
afl.com.au
16 Jan 2020

CLUBS will hold the selection power for next month's State of Origin bushfire relief match after each receiving a shortlist of names from the AFL on Wednesday.

Eight players – four for Victoria and four the All Stars – were put forward by the AFL that clubs will be required to confirm as fit to play for the Victoria v All Stars match at Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 28.

Victorian coach Damien Hardwick and All Stars counterpart John Longmire will then select their squads of 27 on Tuesday, February 18.

A maximum of three players per AFL club will be eligible to feature across the two playing lists.

The final teams will be announced on AFL.com.au on Wednesday, February 26.

Each team will have a starting 18, six interchange players and three emergencies.

A player's best and fairest finish and the 2019 Virgin Australia AFL All-Australian squad were heavily favoured in the process of selecting eight names from each club on Wednesday.

Could we get more State of Origin matches in the future?

By Mitch Cleary
afl.com.au
17 January 2020

NEXT month's State of Origin Bushfire Relief Match could be the catalyst for permanent representative football, according to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick.

Speaking for the first time after being announced as the Victorian coach for the clash at Marvel Stadium on February 28, Hardwick conceded he had changed his opinion on State of Origin.

"If you had have asked me this time last year, I'd probably say no. (But) sometimes things can have a really deep impact, and this might be the start of something," Hardwick said.

"The amount of players we've seen put up their hand for a significant cause is really important.

"It might not be every year, it might be every four years, I'm not exactly sure. It's the players' hands, they're the ones who've got to get out there and play."

Hardwick will coach against an All Stars line-up led by Sydney coach John Longmire, with the pair restricted to a maximum of three players per AFL club across the two playing lists.

The 2019 premiership coach said he had one player first on his list at the selection table.

"Oh, Dustin (Martin)," Hardwick said.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting the other players, you do see them around, but you don't have the day-to-day connection with those guys.

"I know Paddy Dangerfield, but it'd be good to know him a little bit better, Scotty Pendlebury and those types."

Hardwick said dual premiership forward Jack Riewoldt had put his hand up to play for the All Stars – but may have a fight on his hands to become one of three Tigers eligible.

He's got to make the side, Jack. He's already declared himself the captain of the opposition side.

    - Damien Hardwick

"It'll be interesting, some of the players who will be available, Jack, Shane Edwards, to name a few, are going to be important for them as well."

Tickets for the State of Origin match will go on sale from Tuesday January 21 at 12pm AEDT with entry also including the NAB AFL Women's curtain raiser between Collingwood and Melbourne.

Junior prices start from $10 and adults from $20 and will be available from Ticketmaster.

Match-day experiences are also available for auction via here including watching from the coaches' boxes, sitting on the interchange bench and becoming the team's drink steward.

All funds raised will go directly to the Community Relief Fund set-up by the AFL to assist with local football clubs repairing facilities torn about by the national bushfire crisis.

Tom Browne tonight on Ch 7 news said Cotch will play for the Big V.

The names of 8 players from each club (8x18=144) will be put forward to make the final list of 54 (27 per SOO team).

Four All Stars, four Vics: Your club's State of Origin contenders

Sarah Black
afl.com.au
26 Jan 2020

Eight players – four for Victoria and four for the All Stars – were put forward by the AFL, with clubs now in the process of selecting their lists for the Victoria v All Stars match at Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 28.

A maximum of three players per AFL club will be eligible to feature across the two playing lists.

AFL.com.au has confirmed that the player's birthplace will determine which team they are eligible to play for, not the state they were drafted from.

The final teams will be announced on AFL.com.au on Wednesday, February 26.

Here, our writers name their eight players from each club who are eligible for both squads.

RICHMOND

Victoria: Dylan Grimes, Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin, Dion Prestia
All Stars: Shane Edwards, Marlion Pickett, Jack Riewoldt, Sydney Stack

Skipper Trent Cotchin may just miss out on Victorian selection under coach Damien Hardwick, as Jack Dyer medallist Dion Prestia is coming off stronger form. The Tigers could have bookends in the Big V, with Tom Lynch and newly minted Virgin Australia AFL All Australian Dylan Grimes looking set for a gig (Bachar Houli's soft tissue concerns over summer rules him out), and Dustin Martin is born for the big stage. Just try to stop proud Tasmanian Jack Riewoldt from having a run, while clever South Australian Shane Edwards adds some experience. Rounding out the possible Tiger All Stars are dynamic West Australian pair Sydney Stack and Marlion Pickett, edging out Dan Rioli and Shai Bolton (Toby Nankervis is still recovering from groin surgery). What better way to follow up a Grand Final debut than with a State of Origin match?
