I agree. I can see him replacing a Castagna or a Parker from our current side.

More pill yes.

I still think RCD should be playing more of a Kmart Dusty role. Half forward half mid.

Highest possessions was Johnson -a VFL listed player -with  23 ...no-one else even got in the 20's... :shh

Clarke stars as Richmond VFL holds off Footscray

By Brenton Mann

Richmond was stuck in an arm-wrestle with Footscray for the initial three quarters on Saturday at the Swinburne Centre, before breaking clear with a five-goal last quarter to clinch a steely 25-point win.

Fleet-footed young Tiger Judson Clarke sparked his side with four crucial goals, the final score reading, 14.11 (95) to 10.10 (70).

Premiership ruckman Ivan Soldo also drew the gaze of the Richmond faithful as he and seasoned Bulldogs’ ruckman, Stefan Martin locked horns from start to finish.

Soldo and Martin were like two bulls in a paddock, with their aggression setting the tone for their respective midfields.

Jake Aarts was another hardened senior Tiger that showed the way for the bevy of cubs under his tutelage.

Aarts’ pressure peaked when the Bulldogs were making a late flurry, holding the visitors at bay and ensuring Richmond won the four points.

Three-time premiership Tiger Kane Lambert was industrious and instructive in his first game of 2022. The midfielder sat out the second half, playing limited minutes in his first game of 2022 as he manages his hip issue.

Lambert found his way onto the ground midway through the opening term and had an immediate impact. The gut-running Tiger found Samson Ryan on the lead, with Ryan clutching a strong mark and importantly converting his set-shot.

Clarke kicked goals at critical times for Richmond, initially keeping it in touch with Footscray on the stroke of quarter-time, then sealing the win with his fourth goal in the final term.

Both sides set up strong defensively behind the ball, which meant capitalising on turnovers was the main source of scoring. Soldo and Martin’s dominance swayed between the two hulking ruckman, with Tiger Soldo getting the better of his counterpart in the centre square.

The Tigers built momentum in the back end of the first quarter and Clarke reaped the reward, as he pounced on a loose ball close to goal and skidded through his first major on the stroke of quarter time.

The goal cut Footscray’s lead to under two goals and Riley Collier-Dawkins sliced the deficit to under a goal with an inspirational goal to kick-start the Tigers’ surge in the second term.

Lambert had a direct hand once again, pumping the ball inside 50 where Maurice Rioli caused the spillage via sheer dynamic pressure, which led to Collier-Dawkins skirting the boundary line and snapping the goal on his right boot.

Footscray hit back swiftly via a free kick off the ball inside 50, before Soldo showcased once again his set-shot prowess, sneaking through a major from a tight angle for his first for the afternoon.

Second-gamer Austin Johnson then plucked an intercept mark on the paint of Richmond’s 50 and launched through a booming set-shot goal.

Johnson showed it was no fluke, kicking his second goal in the final term from almost the exact same spot, helping seal the win for Richmond. The hard runner accumulated the ball at will on the wing and half-back, but also showed a willingness to play his role and help get Richmond’s game up and going.

The Tigers were cashing in on their good work up the field, as Noah Cumberland dragged down a strong contested mark and curled through his first goal.

The hosts netted four goals in the second term as Footscray kicked two goals via free-kicks, as the Tigers took a narrow two-point lead into half-time.

The third quarter was full of pressure around the ball and in transition, as both sides battled to play the game solely on their terms.

No player epitomises the Richmond pressure more so than Rioli Jnr, and the son of a legend had just the right amount of teasing distance, sweeping in front of a Footscray defender and snatching the intercept mark. The Tiger dynamo swung the tide in Richmond’s favour after converting his set-shot.

Clarke then showed that his mind and reflexes were just as quick as his feet, snapping his second goal and adding to Richmond's momentum.

A duo of goals by Clarke in the final term assured victory for the burgeoning Tigers.

Classy snaps by Sydney Stack and Cam Olden in the last quarter were the icing on the cake for an impressive Tiger victory.

RICH: 3.0 7.3 9.8 14.11 (95)

FOOT: 4.5 6.7 7.9 10.10 (70)

Goal Kickers:

Richmond: Clarke (4), Johnson (2), Aarts, Collier-Dawkins, Cumberland, Olden, Rioli, Ryan, Soldo, Stack

True. I watched the first half though and, aside from his goal, I barely noticed RCD at all. I thought he might have been off injured at one stage.

Although he didn’t get a heap more of it, I noticed Sonsie, specifically his ball use and his ability to involve himself if chains.

Stats aside, I just don’t think Riley is showing enough. I don’t want to be a negative nelly but I think I’m in the “bust” camp with him.

Looks like the VFL stats have been corrected again.

2021 draftees Tom Brown (23 disposals, seven marks), Judson Clarke (four goals), Samuel Banks (19 disposals) and Tyler Sonsie (17 disposals) all impressed.

Soldo was better in the second half but was given a flogging in the first half. All our rucks struggle against Martin.

Richmond VFL coach Steve Morris provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's win over Footscray at the Swinburne Centre.

Tom Brown (23 disposals, seven marks, four rebound-50s)

"Took huge steps forward on the weekend. His starting position was much improved and he reads the play really well. He's starting to piece together some good form."

Maurice Rioli (21 disposals, eight inside-50s, six marks, one goal)

"Was excellent again on the weekend after a quiet match last week. He's in great form and his pressure is as good as anyone in the competition but he's also finding a lot more of the football."

Sam Banks (19 disposals, nine marks, eight tackles, four rebound-50s)

"Excellent game on the weekend. His defensive efforts and intent have improved in the few games that he's played for the Club and he uses the ball really nicely."

Will Martyn (18 disposals, four tackles, four rebound-50s)

"Has prepared himself really well to play good footy down back and that's exactly what he's done. He was really solid down there defensively but also got involved in a lot more attacking play."

Tyler Sonsie (17 disposals, seven marks, six inside-50s)

"Whilst Tyler was a little bit quieter with ball in hand, his defensive efforts were a standout on the day and he's building into the season nicely."

Ivan Soldo (16 disposals, 31 hit-outs, five marks, six clearances, one goal)

"Had a great battle with Stefan Martin and it was great to see him attack the contest and get involved in plenty of ruck contests on the day which was great for him after missing so much footy over the last couple of years."

Jake Aarts (15 disposals, seven clearances, five tackles, one goal)

"Did a lot of grunt work on the weekend with seven clearances which was outstanding. His pressure really helped stem the opposition's clearances and minimise their effectiveness."

Kane Lambert (15 disposals, four inside-50s, three clearances)

"Had a great game in his first game back. Not only did he really influence the contest in the half that he played, but he was also instrumental in guiding those young players around him and setting them up to succeed."

Bigoa Nyuon (14 disposals, seven marks, two tackles)

"Has hit a bit of a purple patch of form on the back of great preparation. His big spoils were once again a standout and his rundown tackle in the last quarter was an incredible effort."

Riley Collier-Dawkins (13 disposals, four inside-50s, one goal)

"Riley's basing his game on defence at the moment which is a great starting point. He kicked a beautiful goal spinning forward and had a reasonable game on the day."

Judson Clarke (12 disposals, four goals, three marks)

"Was great on the day and finally got real reward for effort for playing his role over a number of weeks now. He kicked four goals and probably could have made it five. He continuously showed up in spots that we would want him."

Sydney Stack (10 disposals, two marks, one goal)

"Sydney had an interrupted preparation for the game, but tried really hard and had a really classy finish in the last quarter on the back of great defence."

Noah Cumberland (nine disposals, two marks, one goal)

"Noah was pretty banged up on the day. He was a little bit quieter than usual but is definitely progressing in his development and understanding of the game. He took a great overhead mark and had a really classy finish from close to the boundary."

Samson Ryan (eight disposals, five marks, four tackles, one goal)

"His numbers don't look huge, but the amount of times that he was outnumbered and was able to bring the ball to ground was outstanding. We would have kicked two or three goals as a direct result of him halving contest on the day."
