There is one very important reason to keep this final at Punt Road.
It will really annoy the handbaggers down at Geelong.

Yeah we're already going to vote for him mate, you don't need to keep selling it.....

Yellow and black: How a CD led to star defender's Tigers decision

EILISH Sheerin's debut season has been simply remarkable.

Plucked from AFL Sydney side Inner West Magpies (and Newtown Breakaways prior to that), the 30-year-old Sheerin has been named in the All-Australian squad and has been a key part of Richmond's surge up the ladder.

But with draft interest from both Richmond and Greater Western Sydney on the table, the Tigers have one anonymous supporter to thank for Sheerin opting to nominate for the Victorian draft pool.

Sheerin had spent a season with the Giants as a train-on player before rupturing her ACL, and then returned to the club for an invitational series against Sydney earlier this year.

"Trent Moseby, he's our list manager, and he's very diligent, so I imagine he looked through a lot of very average-quality AFL Sydney footage and saw me at some stage. He reached out towards the end of that invitational series and I'd just been told by GWS that day that they wanted to draft me," Sheerin told womens.afl.

"I was doing recovery after the game, and I was driving a car I'd bought from a car dealership. It has a CD player in it which sits underneath the back seats, so you don't really know it's in there. I bumped the media console, and it started playing this CD which was in the player. And it had one track on it – the Richmond Football Club song.

"It's still crazy, and it still sits in there, I'm treating it as a good luck charm. I'm never removing the CD from the car. I didn't think anything of it, and that night Libby Graham – who was also being signed by Richmond (through a trade from the Giants) – had reached out to see if it was OK to pass on my number to Trent.

"I was wary of the change, there wasn't much time before I had to be down in Melbourne, and I'd have to uproot my whole life. It was exciting, but there was a bit of fear in there as well.

"Initially I said no, that it was too short and I wasn't ready, that I wouldn't be able to get the most out of myself as a footballer if there were so many other elements changing. I spoke to my family and friends, and every single one said I had to do it, that there was no reason to not take up the opportunity.

"In that, the universe makes things charmingly obvious to you, and I had to come down and meet with the club, and once I did, I absolutely loved it."

The torn ACL which halted her journey at GWS was on the opposite knee to the one she had suffered 10 years earlier as a semi-professional soccer player, and she subsequently drifted away from the sport.

Sheerin picked up football through friends at Newtown in either 2018 or 2019 (she's not too sure on the finer details), and had primarily played as an inside midfielder throughout, making her All-Australian squad nod as a rebounding half-back even more astonishing.

"I hadn't played backline until this year. You just go in with a growth mindset and being eager to learn. I'm so lucky, yes, I'm having to learn it at the top level, not local, but we've got great coaches as well, who understand exactly what you have to do," Sheerin said.

"Richmond's always been really great, they say play to your strengths. So when you're out there, play to your natural instincts, but here are some basic structures to play around. The messaging from the club down to our backs coach, Lauren Tesoriero, is really simple, clear and easy to follow.

"I'm surrounded by some amazing players that help provide that guidance, Bec Miller is such a general back there with a great voice, Beth Lynch is another one who has played 25-plus games, and even Libby, who's just come in and playing more consistent games, she's so keen to learn and has come along in leaps and bounds."

Sheerin works as a business development manager for a company her mum, Petra Playfair, started 35 years ago, which specialises in visas and migration.

Conveniently, the company has offices in both Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne, meaning she was able to continue her role after moving for AFLW, and she can also work from home when required.

"She's an absolute gun, she's been a finalist for Telstra's businesswoman of the year a couple of times, they've been the largest provider of legal assistance to asylum seekers. So as a consequence of that, I've worked in detention centres, both in Australia and internationally," Sheerin said.

"I used to spend a lot of time flying up to Manus Island and doing the claims assistance, providing provisions to the asylum seekers who were held in detention centres up there.

"We've now moved a little more into the corporate space, and I'm the director of a division we've created to help migrants, predominantly from south-east Asia, to help them come to Australia and help them set up businesses here and thrive."

Farmer wants a flag: Tiger veteran’s remarkable tale

With 7000 sheep at home, Courtney Wakefield is as tough as they come when there is work involved. But there’s been many tears along the way for the Tiger veteran to All-Australian selection.

Tigers v North SF preview: New-look teams for do-or-die battle

Gemma Bastiani
womens.afl
11 November 2022

A draw two weeks ago between Richmond and North Melbourne has, oddly, led to the pair meeting again in this weekend's do or die semi final. Although just 13 days will have passed since they last played, plenty has changed for both teams and a draw is no longer on the cards.

Head-to-head history

Richmond and North Melbourne have played four times since the former joined the competition in 2020. The Kangaroos took the win in the first three, before the draw a fortnight ago. Against the Roos, Richmond averages a score of 24.3 points, while North Melbourne averages 51.8 points in corresponding games.

Last time they met

A dramatic draw in front of a sold-out Arden Street crowd in round 10 ultimately dictated the make-up of the top eight. Monique Conti and Ash Riddell each won 21 disposals, while Ellie McKenzie starred with two goals.

The Kangaroos were without captain Emma Kearney and ruck Kim Rennie, and lost rebounding defender Erika O'Shea to injury during the game. As a result, North Melbourne coach Darren Crocker was forced to adjust his structures. Emma King had to play as the side's number one ruck, leaving Tahlia Randall as the lone tall marking target in the Roos' attack.

Richmond stopper Meg Macdonald went to star Jasmine Garner through the middle and held her to just 13 disposals - Garner's fewest since 2019 - which played a significant part in slowing the Roos down.

It all came down to a desperate effort from Emelia Yassir to rush one final behind for her Tigers to even up the scoreboard after North Melbourne, exemplifying just how tight the tussle was for the duration.

Key matchup

Bec Miller against Tahlia Randall looms as the key one-on-one match-up for this one, especially after the Tigers' defence was exposed in the air last week. Randall took three contested marks last time these two teams met and is averaging 1.9 marks inside 50 and 1.9 contested marks this season, kicking 10 goals in the process.

In round 10 Miller was playing just her second game back from a hamstring injury, but this time around she has three consecutive games back under her belt and will no doubt be itching for another crack at Randall.

For Randall it comes down to her ability to convert. Getting access to the ball is less of an issue, North Melbourne's midfield has proven it can get it in her vicinity, the forward just needs to make the most of those opportunities.

The state of play

As is the nature of the top eight format, one team - Richmond - approaches this game off the back of a loss, while North Melbourne has kept its hopes alive after eking past Geelong. Nonetheless, both have well and truly experienced the pressure and tension of finals footy.

The biggest shift for this matchup since last time is the return of Kearney and Rennie for North Melbourne. Kearney offers dash and composure out of the back half, with her ability to gain ground with run and carry limiting the impact conditions can have on North Melbourne's defensive exit. In addition, a small forward like Yassir will need to be hyper vigilant of Kearney's impact and play largely as a defensive forward rather than focus only on their own attacking game.

Rennie, meanwhile, adds some height and athleticism through the middle of the ground while also allowing Emma King and Randall to sit as tall key forward targets, splitting defensive units' focus across the dangerous pair.

Richmond cannot get stuck playing straight line footy again like it did last week against Brisbane. The Tigers look at their best when pressuring the opposition, then once the ball is won, using the width of the ground to find space and time to deliver the ball inside 50 with composure. They showed just how good they can be in this respect in the final quarter last week, and should they execute that more consistently through the four quarters, they will be exceptionally hard to beat.

North Melbourne, on the other hand, showed last week just how relentless its defence can be. They conceded 41 inside 50s, but only one goal, as the likes of Brooke Brown, Jasmine Ferguson and Sarah Wright created an impenetrable wall. For this reason, considered attack from the Tigers will be vital, otherwise they will be playing right into the Kangaroos' hands.

Tip:

In one of the most difficult matches to tip this season, the Kangaroos' experience will come to the fore. North Melbourne by three points.

Richmond Tigers v North Melbourne Kangaroos Preview

Sarah Burt
7news
12 November 2022

There’s been controversy galore ahead of the AFLW semi-finals with Richmond refusing to move their finals clash with North Melbourne from the Punt Road Oval - despite that ground’s limited capacity.

The Tigers have been caught in the eye of a finals storm after tickets quickly sold out and fans from both clubs realised they would not be able to attend the game.

So what does all of that mean for the semi-final? We take a look.

LAST TIME THEY MET

The Roos and Tigers clashed just two weeks ago and it ended up in a heart-stopping draw in front of a crowd of 3,147 at Arden Street Oval.

That match gave the Tigers a double chance for the finals while sinking the Kangaroos to the bottom of the eight.

North Melbourne was without their star captain Emma Kearney (knee soreness) and key ruck Kim Rennie also missed through health and safety protocols.

Ellie McKenzie starred for the Tigers, and they controlled most of the first quarter, while Kangaroo Emma King stepped up in the ruck with 27 hitouts..

North Melbourne struggled to capitalise on their forward pressure and were inaccurate in front of goal, which ultimately led to the sides being deadlocked on the final bell.

KEY MATCH-UP: Jasmine Garner v Meg McDonald

Richmond prioritised tagging two-time North Melbourne best and fairest Jasmine Garner in round 10. It worked, with Tiger Meg Macdonald keeping the prolific midfielder to just 13 touches. Now that Kearney is back, Richmond will need to watch her off halfback too.

HOW HEALTHY IS THE TEAM?

Richmond:

Sarah Hosking – Adductor (test)

Beth Lynch – Ankle (test)

North Melbourne:

Perri King – Finger (TBC)

Cassidy Mailer- Leg (indefinite)

Erika O’Shea – Eye (test)

Who wins?

North Melbourne have never lost to Richmond, and have never lost at Punt Road either, making the commentary around the Tigers’ home ground advantage at the venue an interesting narrative.

The width of Punt Road is wider than GMHBA stadium, where the Kangaroos played last week, and the wide ground seems to help North’s ball movement. The Tigers will be aware of this and will likely utilise the likes of Mon Conti and Ellie McKenzie to cover the extra space.

There was a lot of conversation around North Melbourne’s Garner and Tiger Conti battling it out for points in the Coaches Association Champion Player Award (which Garner eventually claimed) last time they met, however, this time there is a whole lot more at stake and these two excel under pressure.

Tip:

North Melbourne defeat Richmond.

Agree we got the jump on them early last time. They had to chase us. But when they closed the contests and space down they got on top. Their skills by foot are better than ours
