Straight sets, but it's not all bad

Richmond might have been dismissed in straight sets in its first finals series, but there are countless positives to come out of the season and one big one from the semi-final loss. Despite going down by 36 points to North Melbourne, unheralded defender Katelyn Cox showed just what she is made of. After being signed by the Kangaroos as an inactive player replacement in 2021, and delisted without making her debut, Cox went back to the VFLW and developed her footy. That earned her selection at the most recent draft and Cox has since played every possible game for the Tigers this season. Typically a running, rebounding defender, Cox was tasked with a defensive forward role on Roos captain Emma Kearney and didn't just work to stop the star, but also kicked her first ever AFLW goal to open the game.

While Garner breaking free and King playing more as a stay-at-home forward was essential, it really came down to the controlling style of play North Melbourne was able to execute, effectively playing 'keepings off' footy.

The Kangaroos not only won more possession than they did in round 10, but also found more of it on the outside, therefore limiting the pressure Richmond was able to apply.

In turn with North Melbourne's increase in uncontested possession and increased reliance on kicks over handballs, it dominated the mark count, registering 33 more than the Tigers and 65 in total. In the second quarter alone, the Kangaroos took 29 marks to Richmond's eight.

Richmond in fact generated more inside 50s and scored more efficiently in Saturday's semi-final than it did in round 10, but it was opened up on the turnover as North Melbourne kicked 51 points - 68.9 per cent of its total score - from turnover.

By using clean, controlled movement around the ground, North Melbourne's deliveries forward proved far more effective, despite registering 35 inside 50s, exactly the same number as in round 10. By picking their way down the ground and hitting up neat targets up forward, the Tigers' defence was forced into more one-on-one battles, which was unsettling for the home side.

This season Richmond has forced poor, chaotic forward entries from its opponents, meaning its defensive line could move across and provide support to one another, but with the elite inside 50s North Melbourne was able to bring on Saturday that defensive style was simply not possible.

As a result, those 35 inside 50s were far more effective, with the Roos goaling from 31.4 per cent of their entries on Saturday, compared to just 8.6 per cent in round 10.

With that methodical, considered ball movement North Melbourne was able to cut through the pressured, defensive structure that has brought Richmond so much success this season, ultimately winning through to a maiden preliminary final berth.

X-rated message in full view lands Richmond AFLW star Jess Hosking in hot water: ‘Deeply disappointed’

The AFL has handed down its verdict after the AFLW star displayed offensive words on her shoulder strapping.

Richmond AFLW star Jess Hosking has apologised for a sinister message written on her shoulder straps during last weekend’s semi-final loss to North Melbourne.

7NEWS reporter Mitch Cleary revealed the AFL issued the star Tiger with a ‘please explain’ notice after Channel 7 cameras picked up the crude message during the live broadcast of the game.

Hosking, who played the game with both shoulders strapped, had a stack of different words written on the strapping, but it was the “Kill B*tches” comment on her right shoulder that drew the ire of the AFL.

The AFL confirmed in a statement to 7NEWS that Hosking had escaped punishment for the “offensive language.”

“The AFL issued a please explain to Richmond’s Jess Hosking after an inappropriate message was written on her shoulder strapping during the Richmond and North Melbourne final last weekend,” the statement read.

“Hosking was extremely remorseful and deeply disappointed in her actions. The AFL has since accepted a letter of apology from Jess and has issued an official warning to the club and Jess regarding the offensive language.”

She was also pictured during the qualifying loss to Brisbane with a message in a similar place on her shoulder, which read “Smash B*itches”.

Incidentally, Hosking’s twin sister Sarah appeared to take an aggressive mindset into the clash against the Kangaroos with a series of big bumps throughout the match.

Her crunching bump on Mia King left the Roo in serious discomfort, but Hosking was ultimately cleared by the Match Review Officer.

“Oh Hosking! She has floored Mia King with a brutal bump, and King is very slow to rise,” Channel 7 commentator Alister Nicholson said at the time.

“She is picking them off left, right and centre at the moment, Sarah Hosking - and she is shaken, Mia King.”

Richmond bowed out of the finals in straights sets after finishing fourth on the ladder.

They played North Melbourne twice in three weeks, drawing with the Kangaroos in the final game of the home and away season.

It was the club’s first finals series since they joined the AFLW in 2020.

Ch7 don't have to take close ups of our girls' strapping & the onus should be on them to control their images just like they would with the men's game.  Take a wide shot & none of it could offend.   
Also, who cares if the girls play with a bit of backbone?  We encourage it in the men's game, why not the women's game too?   
What's the bet an opposition player has "Smash C*nt*" written on their strapping ... (urging her to "Smash Conti" ...)

As for a little thing on wrist strapping, what a strange comparison compared to this

Writing a small run kick chase on a message is one thing .. having a third party fill your strapping with nonsense that she wouldn’t even be able to read is a totally different matter

I’m the opposite of PC correct and this offends me zero .. I just think it’s unprofessional, childish and looks ridiculous

North have been eliminated in the Prelim by Melbourne. Just further illustrates the gap between the top sides and us and where we need to improve and eventually get to.
