Dimma said in his presser that Young won't be playing.

Only Tiger debutants will be Hopper and Taranto.

Prestia and Short are right to go.

Pickett is available for selection. He's lacking match-play but he's done all the conditioning so if we pick him we're confident he's right to go.

Seems those in the media are going for Carlton. In their match preview, Lloyd, Barrett and Nat Edwards all tipped the Blues. Lloyd reckons Carlton's midfield will overpower ours.

Hardwick said developing forward-ruck Samson Ryan was in contention to play his second senior game on Thursday night, while the likes of Judson Clarke and Tyler Sonsie were also a chance.

'Spy' says Cumberland wasn't part of the Captain's run today. Neither was Sonsie nor Young as Dimma said in his presser.
Miller, Samson, Clarke, Mansell, Ross and Dow were there as part of the 26 man squad as well as our usual senior blokes.

So, my final guess at the team based on that is:

B:    Vlastuin       Miller       Grimes
HB:  D.Rioli         Balta         Baker
C:    McIntosh     Prestia      Pickett
HF:   Bolton        Riewoldt    Clarke
F:     Martin         Lynch        M.Rioli
R:   Nankervis     Hopper       Taranto
Int:  Ryan, Broad, Cotchin, Short.
Sub: Ross.

Emg: Graham, Dow, Mansell.

The one I'm unsure about is whether Clarke will be in the 22 or used as the sub.

I'm not sure if Dimma will but it will be a major shock if Mansell is played as a small forward in a real game. I was told yesterday though that Mansell has given and done everything he has been asked to do in that role. It's whether he has the ability to do it in the real stuff that matters though  :-\.

I’m getting 2019 vibes in the sense that if we can just break even on the ledger until reinforcements arrive (Tarrant and gibcus) then we can really push hard after the bye. Just gotta hold the fort until we get some tall timber back

Damian Barrett on Footy Classified last night reckons McKay will kick 7 goals against us tonight because we don't have Tarrant or Gibcus.

Round 1 Burning Questions - ’Not sure they’re capable’: Reality check amid Tigers hype

Catherine Healey and David Zita
Fox Sports
March 16th, 2023 12:41 pm

Richmond v Carlton (Andrew Collins Cup)

Tigers’ burning question: Will the Taranto-Hopper deals live up to the hype?

It’s no secret experts on jumping on the Tigers train in 2023 off the back of their remarkable trade period that saw Giants duo Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto sign at the club. The move is set to free up the likes of three-time Norm Smith Medallist Dustin Martin, Shai Bolton and Trent Cotchin to spend more time forward, bolstering the already dynamite duo of Tom Lynch and Jack Riewoldt. But will the new-look Richmond engine room find their spark early in 2023? Fox Footy’s Jonathan Brown is concerned the Tigers are taking an ageing list into the new season. “There are quite a few veterans – stars of the team, those A-graders – that for Richmond still to be successful, they still need to be playing at A-grade level. And I’m not sure they’re capable of that anymore,” he said On The Couch.

Blues’ burning question: How deep does Carlton’s mental scars run?

Carlton spent all but the dying seconds of the 2022 season inside the top eight before their famous slide out of finals only by percentage. Coach Michael Voss had proved to be one of the hires of the season as he lifted an injury-depleted defence into finals contention. But their shock finals drop off is likely to leave some lingering doubts – the question is how deep do they run? Nineteen of 25 Fox Footy experts have tipped Carlton to play finals, while Freo great Matthew Pavlich believes the Blues can overcome the mental game. “Carlton have promised so much for a long time and really last year should have been finalists and tasted some September action if not for a couple of blunders late in games in the late rounds,” he told Fox Footy. “I think that would’ve stung them and will make them a top-eight team in 2023.”

THE 4 CERTAINTIES FOR RICHMOND VERSUS CARLTON

BY SEN
16 March 2023

Back for another year, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for Thursday night's season opener between Richmond and Carlton.

Tim Taranto & Jacob Hopper each with 20+ disposals

Decked out in new colours, the star duo is set to come out firing in their Tigers debut.

Tim Taranto was discussed constantly throughout pre-season, looking poised for a career year after being among Richmond’s best through the scratch matches.

The former Giants best and fairest has only had two seasons averaging less than 20 touches in his career, so exceeding that mark is almost a formality for him tonight.

Jacob Hopper is set to add some grunt to the Tigers’ engine room, seeking a bounce back season after an injury-hampered 2022.

With an average of 22 disposals per game across his career, Hopper will certainly get his fair share of the footy in the season opener.

Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt & Dustin Martin combine for 6+ goals

On name power alone, the trio Richmond have named at full-forward looks set to be one of the most fearsome in the competition.

Tom Lynch is a perennial Coleman contender, finishing as the runner up last year after kicking 60 goals across 18 games.

Jack Riewoldt may not be the dominant key forward he once was, yet he is still a big threat to boot multiple majors at any time, averaging 1.9 goals per game last season.

Three-time Norm Smith Medallist Dustin Martin rounds out the group, looking to come back firing after an interrupted 2022.

Martin may have made his mark as one of the game’s greatest midfielders, however he has proven time and time again that he can break a game open playing as a key forward.

Matched up against a Carlton backline missing some key pieces, expect these Tigers to run rampant in a high-scoring affair.

Jack Makeham

Harry McKay kicks 3 or more goals

Robbie Tarrant has been a good matchup for Harry McKay over the last few years and in his absence it will likely be Ben Miller who gets the job.

Following his best pre-season ever and coming into his prime, this could be an enormous year for McKay and that starts with the season opener.

Expect Harry to take advantage of the matchup and hit the scoreboard against the Tigers.

Patrick Cripps 30 or more disposals

Patrick Cripps averages 30.8 disposals per game against Richmond in his last four matchups.

It’s fair to say the Tigers historically haven’t put a ton of defensive work into the Carlton skipper and unless that changes tonight with Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper coming in, he will once again dominate.

He picked up 30 and 34 across the two games in 2022 respectively and was the best player on the ground in last season’s season opener.
