Wallace on Sports Tonight said we were flat and disinterested. He said he warned them.

TW also said it fell on deaf ears.  I think it shows that the maturity isn’t there, as a team, just yet.

You could tell early on that our players weren't switched on.  The desperation wasn't there, as it has been in other weeks.

Other teams may have the experience and ability to turn that situation around, but apart from a few exceptions, our players couldn't switch on properly, and turn their form around, after a sluggish start.

We still don't have the hunger and desire that is needed. That show no mercy attitude. As a side we're still too "nice". That's why we don't bury sides even when dominating on the way to a win. We seem to just do what is required and play to the level of the opposition on the day.

It would have helped too if we had kicked straight early. Some of the misses were unforgivable. That sort of thing just kills you. Once Hawthorn got a few goals in front, their confidence and run lifted and we were playing catch up footy all day.

Wallace irate at Tigers' efforts

Jason Phelan
Exclusive to richmonfc.com.au

Richmond was poised to take a big step in its quest to play finals this season against the undermanned Hawks, but barely managed to fire a shot in Launceston on Sunday.

It was a match that the Tigers were favoured to win and perhaps should have won with the carrot of seventh place on the ladder up for grabs. It's a scenario that's all too familiar for the yellow-and-black army, and Terry Wallace feels that his charges let slip a golden opportunity to send the club down a new path.

"Our supporters worry about those sort of games and we sat there and said, 'we need to be professional enough that our supporters don't need to worry about those sort of games (anymore)'," a visibly angry Wallace said from Aurora Stadium after the 41-point loss.

"That we'll be good enough and strong enough in the mind to be able to get the job done when you need to get it done. I'm not taking anything away from the opposition at all, but the reality of it was that they came here with about seven of their senior blokes out of their line-up and our blokes just didn't come to play - that was my message (after the match)."

Skipper Kane Johnson - who Wallace praised for his tireless efforts in curbing Luke Hodge - was the only Tiger to earn any plaudits from the irate coach who snorted disdainfully when asked specifically where his team had fallen down.

"Where do you want to start? I mean we just never got our game going at any stage at all. The worst element was that we wouldn't put our head over the ball and win it," he replied frankly.

"I don't have any issue with (Johnson's) mindset or where he was at, but the rest of the group need to have a look at themselves. You know a little bit of publicity - it doesn't take much - there were just a few little sounds coming out of the rooms over the week, a few things have been said that (indicated) perhaps a couple were getting a bit ahead of themselves and you learn a very, very harsh lesson in this competition if that's the case."

Unheralded Hawks Rick Ladson and Tim Clarke were among the chief architects of the Tigers' demise - gathering 53 disposals and 21 marks between them - and Wallace used them as prime examples of the differing mindsets on display on Sunday.

"Blokes with perhaps not huge reputations, but with enough to prove and that was the difference," he said of the two.

"I just thought we were appalling in our ability to man up, I mean I thought we had some guys who were more worried about what their numbers read at the end of the day in relation to their own stats than what they were worried about playing two-way footy and you don't win any game of football unless you're prepared to do it both ways.

"We've had our highs, our lows and we've had our shocking moments in the season - this goes down as one of them - and we've had some really strong moments.

"But what (this) shows you is that in this competition - (where) we were good enough to beat Adelaide who were absolutely flying when our disciplines are right, when everyone's dotting the Is and crossing the Ts - if you want to get ahead of yourself anywhere along the line, you'll come back down to earth with a thud."

terry wallace has not even been true and fair in his comments.

he comes out and says that only sugar can hold his head up, after a gr8 job on hodge. yes it was a good job, well done sugar, u did a fantastic job on an injured player. its common knowlege that hodge isnt right!

btw, terry should have praised simmo and petts, they are the ones who carried the side, and the only reason why raines cant be mentioned is because terrys poor form in the box meant that raines was denied bog 4 the game, as at quarter time he was on his way to that!

he says the boys were complaicent, ahead of themselves, believing the press, bla bla bla

yes that is true, but that is the job of the coaching staff to keep the boys head right, remeber many are still young.

nathan brown imo made a big mistake talking up the 8 and finals in an article on the w/e, this shows the team were getting ahead of themselves.

what disappoints me the most, we got thumped by the dawks, and terry made big errors in team selection and in his decision making during game day! maybe he was ahead of himself and the team just represented the way he coached during the week........remember, u only play like you train!

terry, this w/e , you have cost urself coach of the yr, its not just the players fault!

it was a shocker no doubt about it.

we played crap

the umpires had really no impact on teh result sort of, but what really breaks my balls is the way , week in and week out , we get treated very harshly by the umpires. they always seem to have 2 sets of rules.  now im not saying we lost due to th eumpires, but at many crucial times, crucial decisions and non decisions really wrecked us. we once again were very stiff and it peees me off

this loss was worse than the 2 100pt thumpings we had

I'm still trying to fathom why Terry didn't put Polo on Franklin. It wasn't as though Polo was containing Mitchell.

Polo played on Bateman

I'm not sure who played on Mitchell - we think it was (gulp) Tiv when Tiv was in the centre for the centre bounce. :rollin

That's true X but all they can do is tell them you cannot actually make them listen.

It was like at half time Suga spoke to them before they went off - he got really stuck into them but you could tell from the "body language" some of them just weren't listening and that's no fault of Suga.

Being at the game you could actually tell 10 minutes into the 1st quarter we were in big big trouble - they were as flat as pancakes.... :banghead :banghead

And did I mention the weather  :help

If a player needs the coach and captain to get them up and motivated for a game that would get the team into the top 8 then they shouldn't be out there. Where's the ruthless attitude? Maybe we should tell the boys next time we are favourites that they are playing the top side so at least  they are switched on and focussed when they run out.

we lost our ruthlessness when graeme richmond died. i watched the game the other night on fox, 1994 , v the crows at aami! northey coaching! by god we were an unskillfull mob, but we nearly had all that ruthlessness back. watching back , i had forgotten how hard and tough we became under northey. my only wish now was that we could tackle and play hard like back then.

makes me wonder how far we could have gone if fat mal brown didnt have an agenda v northey. and that fat prick now , who once claimed he loved tigerland, is nothing but a yellow and brown poo pusher!

The problem under Northey and a number of other coaches throughout that era was we tried to compensate lack of skill with ruthlessness and toughness. Once we met a top side that could match our intensity and toughness we were stuffed.

You would expect us to struggle now days against the top sides because of the number of young bodies we have in the team but there was such no excuse against a similarly young side such as Hawthorn. We were just not switched on mentally. I wish we could bottle what Wayne Johnston has. Even as just a runner he said the adrenalin still gets going in the big games. That's what we need from our guys. Get the adrenalin pumping and have that hunger to go for the kill :thumbsup.

Well well well....Got back Sunday night. Hobart was great. The whole weekend was great. Sunday morning 9 of us decked out the mini-bus with balloons and streamers with the theme song blaring only for a satanic performance. I was seriously offended with the way the boys played. Here we are putting our hard earned to go interstate, we take days off work and they serve up that crap....makes me sick thinking about it.

A lot of downers...too many passengers. Almost got lost on the big ground because we couldnt man up or create a contest. Woeful inside 50 during the 1st quarter. We just had no system or structure. We were bamboozled going into 50 and required someone to step up but it didnt happen and we got steamrolled. A couple of positives...rapt with Patto and Meyer's development, and solid performances from Newy and Johno.

Im really trying hard to like the Bowdens. I really am. Im trying to understand the fuss about Joel....Im trying to understand how he stole Richo's B&Fs the last two years. I was even sitting down with various supporters at Wrest Point discussing why they rate him...and I still dont get it. Patrick for me...Ill never get why we chased so hard for him (god help me if its to make his brother happy).

OM...looking at it from the comfort of the couch on TV lol...it looked to me in the first quarter that our players were caught out by the length of the ground- that was evidence by the fact that kicks from the wing were landing about 15 mtrs outside the 50 consistently, therefore...we were always 1 kick short and we needed one more short kick from the wing to a running player who could then have got the footy inside 50. Sadly there wasnt much run and the options for the extra kick that was needed just werent there.

If we had of played a good side, it'd have been a third 100 point thrashing.

How did we throw away a game against that rabble?!  :scream. Franklin got a whopping total of 6 possies and a goal when someone actually made him accountable ::).
