As is No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor who is so composed whenever he’s near the ball. While Lalor only had 10 touches on Thursday night, he rarely makes a mistake and contributed with a goal and a goal assist, possessing the innate ability to find his teammates in tight situations.
Kane Cornes is loving what he is seeing from Lalor who has spent the majority of his time at AFL level playing as a forward with small stints in the midfield.
“Lalor is something else, he really is,” said Cornes.
“I’m captivated by what a good footballer he is. That sounds so simplistic, but he makes the right decisions at the right time with the right option.
“There’s not an ounce of selfishness in him, he’s already got that team-first aspect, he glides in the air.
“There’s a lot to be positive about.”
Cornes’ love of Lalor prompted him to ask the question - Would you take Sam Lalor or Harley Reid?
David King replied: “Harley Reid. I think the kid will settle down.
“I think he’ll be a top player, he does some things…”
Cornes said: “Even though I’ve been critical of Reid’s actions, I’ve said in four to five years the product is going to be (great).
“But I think I’m taking Lalor. I think he is a better ball user and he has a bit more nuance and smarts in his game.
“He appears to be better over his head. The way he floats through the air…”
King added further: “Some of his handballing… he’s a Shane Edwards.
“He’s a handballer that you don’t recognise at the time but they put their teammates into clear space.”
