‘Bogged’ car, pinwheels and a reverse grill: Inside AFL draft interviews – and weirdest 2025 questions

Ben Waterworth and Dylan Bolch
Fox Sports
October 21st, 2025

First-round prospect Sam Cumming reckons he had 16 club interviews in the first two days at the combine.

“At first, it’s definitely pretty daunting, especially when you’ve got an Adem Yze (Richmond) or a Connor Idun (GWS Giants) looking across from you,” Cumming tells foxfooty.com.au. “It’s all part of the process.

“It’s not too bad. I guess you get used to it at some point.”

-----------------

Top WA chance Jacob Farrow, who’s met every club except Gold Coast, was asked by Richmond to nominate the craziest thing he’d ever done.

“They stumped me, so I was there for a bit thinking,” he tells foxfooty.com.au.

“I said probably doing a backflip off a high wall and nearly cracking my head open.”

----------------

“You present yourself to the best of your ability each time and I think it is challenging, but I really enjoy it,” Sam Grlj tells foxfooty.com.au.

“Why should I shy away from it when I want to do this for a living? So I might as well embrace it.”

That is, though, easier said than done when scouts reach out to prospects for the first time.

--------------

Fellow club-tied player Louis Kellaway – a Richmond father-son prospect – was asked by Fremantle which Dockers player he “would kick off the list”.

“(It) was a little bit weird,” Kellaway tells foxfooty.com.au.

“I talked around it … I just said I’d slot into the midfield well with (Caleb) Serong and (Andrew) Brayshaw.

“That was a tough question to answer.”

Minnow club asking a minnow draftee which minnow player he'd kick off their minnow list.

Perhaps they forget there's 800+ listed players and the F/S eligible kid probably doesn't care who's not getting a game for Freo given he 99.9% won't be playing there.

Seems like afl clubs are stuck asking those same dumb psychoanalytical situational questions to a bunch of 18 year olds hoping to learn something about their mentality.

Yep.

I'd have told them to kick off Serong to Richmond's list for a Future 4th rounder. See how they like it. Dumb question, dumb answer.

Draft should be held in October instead of 5 weeks after silly season.

All the chatter is bloody annoying.

Unfortunately the Draftees have their VCE’s to tend with over the next 4 weeks.
They also need to prepare for life after football….

What difference do you think it would make? A significant one? There might be 70 kids taken across the country.

All that anxiety about both exams + draft.

vs

Knowing you're drafted and can relax somewhat (they would, smart or not), or knowing you're not drafted so you'd better study harder

As someone who potentially has a daughter looking to be drafted this season I can tell you first hand, exams are taking 100% of her focus at the moment and so they should be.
We’re not just talking about the 50 or 60 kids who will get drafted this year, we’re also talking about the 3-400 hundreds that will nominate and won’t get drafted. These kids have just spent the last 12 years working toward this, is definitely doesn’t come down to “oh well, I didn’t get drafted, I better pull my finger out with study now” for many of the kids the next 4 weeks may determine what happens to them for the rest of there lives, it shouldn’t be all thrown out the window just because the punters can’t wait and extra 5 weeks to see what there club is going to do in the draft.

I really respect this answer and personally don't think the draft before or after VCE has enough Pros or Cons to clearly suggest either is best, but if parents and the kids think it should go after VCE then sure. As a kid doing VCE, id personally prefer to have some certainty about the draft before hand so I could relax and not have that weight on my shoulders during exams.
Go Tigers!

Richmond only came on late and didn't speak to Robey until the Combine. Same attention as any other club though. Hasn't spoken to any club more than twice.

Twomey - "Do you want to go to Essendon?"
Robey - "For sure" (he's a Bombers fan)

Robey has grown from 175cm in 2023 to 182cm in 2024 and now to 192cm this year.

"They can't go too far wrong the Tigers." - @CalTwomey on Richmond's draft hand

https://x.com/AFLcomau/status/1980876894364135506

In the Gettable AFL segment, Cal Twomey discusses an ideal draft for Richmond at picks 3-4. Building on last year's six first-rounders, focus on speed and run. Top targets: Dylan Patterson and Zeke Uwland, but likely to Gold Coast. Alternatives: Sam Grill ("The Sizzler") for pacey midfield run (played VFL with Tigers), or powerful options like Robey, Sam Cumming, or Xavier Taylor. Overall, Tigers can't go too far wrong.

“Went forward and was damaging”: AFL Draft prospect’s forward focus pays dividends

Jonty Ralphsmith
Zerohanger
24 Oct 2025

North Adelaide prospect Sam Cumming looms as a potential top-10 pickup at the AFL Draft in November.

An All-Australian part of South Australia's victorious U18s National Championships campaign, Cumming's acumen in the midfield is well established and he has become a much more potent front half threat in 2025.

Starting forward for South Australia throughout much of the carnival, he proved a difficult matchup with his power and strength making him a dual threat in the air and on the ground.

Speaking to Craft of the Draft earlier in the season, Cumming said a goal of his was to improve his forward craft and he was given every opportunity to succeed before a shoulder injury cut his season short.

Recruiters got an entrée of that ability in a four goal game for North Adelaide early in the season, while he also showed his wares playing school footy for Prince Alfred College and averaged a goal per game for South Australia.

Cumming also played four senior games for the Roosters this year, averaging 13 disposals, three clearances and three tackles as he showed great promise in the midfield mix.

“We had a plan in place for him and he nailed it, achieving everything he wanted to this year,” Roosters coach Mitch Clisby said.

“We saw his strengths on show in those league games where he got a best on ground and showed his strength around the contest and competitiveness and went forward and was damaging.”

“We were really pleased with his progression as a forward – he's s a hard player to matchup on because one-on-one he's so strong and overhead, he's so powerful.”

His ability to slot in seamlessly followed the teenager playing local senior footy for Wentworth, the same junior club that GWS Giant Jack Ough hails from, as a 15-year-old, with those experiences giving him an insight into what it takes to play against men.

“Going up against bigger bodies has certainly held me in good stead,” Cumming told Craft of the Draft earlier in 2025.

“It was awesome to just watch how everyone prepares and the training standards.

“Being part of the grand final team, it was special to see what it meant to everybody especially being so young, so it was a real eye opener.

“I think we had 10,000-15,000 at the grand final which is the biggest crowd I've ever played in front of.”

Cumming then got an insight into life on an AFL list when training with Port Adelaide in pre-season, with Connor Rozee one he learned off in particular.

“Connor opened his arms a little bit and brought me in and taught me the ways to be an AFL footballer and his footwork is unbelievable,” Cumming recalled.

“The way he gets on the move at stoppage and has the agility and power to burst from packs and being able to find a target from that.”

He moved to Adelaide's prestigious Prince Alfred College ahead of last year, with North Adelaide nurturing his development in that time.

Roosters teammate and fellow draft prospect Blake Oudhsoorn-Bennier gave an insight into what he'll provide an AFL club.

“He's just an explosive player who has got good fundamentals,” Oudshoorn-bennier said.

“He's got good fundamentals; a good left foot, right foot and very good in the air and plays taller than he is.”

“I think he's the ultimate professional as well when it comes to being an athlete.

“He looks after himself off the field, but then when it's trainings and games, he really drives those standards.”

Taylor is growing on me as he seems to be clear top4/5 consensus now,  along with - duursma. CDT. Robey.

Sharp odd one out.

That leaves backline -

Old bigs - broad.
Old smalls -  Vlastuin. Short.
Bigs - Miller. Balta. Gibcus. Trainor.
Smalls. - brown. Banks.

Fred rodriguez no where to be seen.

Feels like he was talked about as a potential pick 1 not too long ago.

Would be nice to have him at 38.

Louis Emmett another who would be good at that pick. More so if we don't have CDT.

Kellaway as the 4th player drafted .

Balta. Gibcus. Trainor.
Smalls. - brown. Banks.

We need mids and pace
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”
