How Butters, mega deal shook up AFL draft… and early whispers on top calls

Should the Tigers land Pick 5, they’d hold the second and fifth selections – one of the strongest hands in this year’s draft.

So what does the reshaped order mean for how the early stages of this year’s draft could play out?

Assuming Port Adelaide matches a Pick 1 bid on Cochrane, Essendon takes GWV Rebels star Ethan Drever and West Coast selects local gun Heath Mellody with its first pick at No.3, Sandringham Dragons high-flyer Arki Butler would be a major contender to be taken by either Richmond (Pick 2) or Melbourne (Pick 4).

Butler, who has drawn comparisons to new Cat Toby Greene, is blessed with freakish talent, athleticism, clean hands, class and a great goal sense. He’s not the complete player yet, but if the club that drafts Butler can help him live up to his full potential, it’ll be greatly rewarded for its investment.

Multiple sources suggested Butler would sit at the very pointy end of both the Tigers’ and Demons’ club draft boards. Would that prompt Richmond to select him with its first pick to ensure Melbourne can’t get him with Pick 4?

Another player to keep an eye on in the top five is Mitch Harris, who’s now widely regarded as the best key defender in the draft pool after a strong Under 18s carnival for SA and excellent displays for Woodville-West Torrens’ SANFL league side.

A tough, courageous and close-checking defender, Harris has improved his one-on-one defensive capabilities this year to complement his intercept game that’d already blossomed in his bottom-age year.

While the Tigers are unlikely to consider him with their first pick, five clubs spoken to by foxfooty.com.au on Monday linked the Demons to Harris.

In fact, sources suggested Harris might’ve been a key reason for Melbourne’s move up to Pick 4 last week, amid whispers North Melbourne (Pick 6) has interest in the 196cm backman. And even if the Kangaroos must send Pick 5 Sydney’s way to help them land All-Australian Nick Blakey via trade, Melbourne’s move could still pay off, with a player like Harris potentially helping fill a key defensive chasm at the Swans long term.

The other Harris curveball is the Adelaide Crows, who’ve been strongly linked to Harris, as first reported by 9 News Adelaide’s Braden Ingram.

The Crows don’t enter the draft until Pick 15, but are keen to move up the order to put them in a strong spot to draft Harris, according to clubs. They’d love North’s pick — which could also be part of a potential Nick Murray trade — but the complication will be if Sydney demands Pick 6 from the Roos in a Blakey trade.

Another theory among clubs in recent days is that both the Tigers and Demons would now be more comfortable taking 204cm Northern Knights ruck Harry Van Hattum with an early pick.

Van Hattum has been described as a generational prospect with an enormous vertical leap, great hit-out craft and the ability to become a fourth midfielder post-ruck contest.

Only a few clubs, however, have been prepared to use a top-five draft pick on rucks this century. The Demons used Pick 3 in 2019 to take Luke Jackson, who became a premiership player two years later. Carlton’s Matthew Kreuzer (Pick 1, 2007) and West Coast’s Nic Naitanui (Pick 2, 2008) are the only other rucks taken in the top five since 2000.

But with both Richmond and Melbourne now holding multiple picks inside the top 12, it wouldn’t be a major shock if either club used its first selection on Van Hattum, knowing it could pair him with another high-end talent a few picks later.

Butler and Van Hattum would arguably be Richmond’s ideal draft scenario. Butler would provide much-needed forward-half spark and Van Hattum would be the long-term replacement for triple premiership ruck Toby Nankervis.

Van Hattum could also appeal to Melbourne as a long-term successor to legendary Demon Max Gawn, learning from the veteran ruckman before eventually taking over.

On the basis of Richmond getting pick 5 from Port, and Swans now have pick 6.

Who goes where?

1. Essendon - Port - Bid on Cochrane
2. Essendon -Drever
3. Richmond - Carlton - Bid on Walker
4. Richmond - HVH
5. Eagles - Mellody
6. Melbourne - Butler
7. Richmond - Teixeria?
8. Sydney - Harris (they prob need key defenders). But don't be surprised if they bid on Matthews
9. Gold Coast - Malady? Snell?
10. Saints - They may go for Gayfer here - or someone they like more. Steed? Snell? Malady? Bradley?

After the top 7-8 its gonna be very hard to predict.

I don't think I've been this worried with our drafting. Maybe in all honesty the Dusty selection. I was so keen on Dusty and so many wanted John Butcher...

I don't want us to have to make a call on HVH being generational or not, my gut feel says he won't be. Bit of a junior bully, had an average carnival and was 3rd highest rated ruckma, his combine was OK.. I think he will be a genuine AFL player but I hate having to make a decision on using Pick 2 for him or not.

We could take whoever we like,  remaining of; mellody. Drever. Butler. At 2.

Gambling hvh is still there at 5...

4d chess like hawthorn did with roughead.

People are saying Melbourne traded up with the expectation of Hvh , assuming Richmond wouldn't take him. With harris as the back up.

Who knows.

All assuming we get 5 over the line.

TL isn’t that the gamble with all top end draft picks?

Whether we go Drever, HVH, Mellody, Butler or Tex at #2, were gambling on them becoming an all-aus caliber 200+ gamer.

The only difference I see is that HVH is a ruck and it’s rare that they go so high, which is valid and it’s the reason I didn’t wanna go for CDT last year.

Honestly I don’t think that any of those top5 players had consistently great seasons at state or talent league level whether that was due to form or fitness.

Looks like it’ll be our pick 22 + future 1st for ports pick 5.

Would give us pick 2, 5, the early 20s compo pick and our early 40s third round to draft 4 players.

Could add a 5th pick is short is traded tomorrow.

East Perth key defender Jake Soutar estimates he’s spoken to 10-12 clubs after being overlooked in the mid-season draft.

Height: 190cm
Weight:  74g
Age: 20
Clubs from: East Perth, West Coast JFC

Interesting to see if we go for a 20-22 year old from a state league rather than another 18 year old with our last pick this year just as we did with Nathan Broad in the 2015 draft.

So lets deal with the bombers and take Walker?

if walker is that good the compo pick wont matter.

Its pretty simple for me. If we have botched more than 2 picks from our 2024 draft that wont be elite then its a hard no for HVY. Take 2 mids.

smilie is likely one already  :shh

Had a great year and a lot of people have talked about him over here. He and Wright stand out to me as 21 -22 year olds just that little bit more advanced than 18 year olds and ready. This is what im saying it a possibility both go at around pick 40 or later if listening to the experts. Its supposed to be a deep draft ive banged on about our club doing due diligence and going deep while the going is good.

Makes sense crawski
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”
