Schulz aiming high in '07
11:37:26 AM Thu 1 February, 2007
Angus Morgan
Exclusive to afl.com.au

Based on his ranking in Terry Wallace's NAB Cup incentive scheme, Jay Schulz isn't yet guaranteed a start in the Tigers' fixture against Geelong at Skilled Stadium on 25 February.

But the straight-shooting Richmond forward has grand plans for 2007 and he's determined to make an early impact to set new standards for the coming season, his fifth at AFL-level.

"Before I got injured I was doing all of my training up the forward line, sitting up at full-forward alongside Kent Kingsley who's been a massive help to our forward line structure, he's really helped to stabilise it," said Schulz.

"Both of us have been working out of the square and it's been working really well. And of course you've got Browny who's always handy, and then Richo.

"Having said that, I've discussed with 'Plough' that you've got Graham Polak who's played down forward as well and there could be a chance for maybe him to come down and get a couple of quick goals while I hold up his end of the bargain."

Rotating between FF and CHB will probably help Sarge this year. Keep him involved in the game. The problem he had last year was he would kick a couple of goals early then disappear for the rest of the match as he didn't have the necessary fitness.

Quote
"I'm getting a bit sick of hearing people say, 'Look, it's time for you to stand up'. I know that myself, but I just haven’t been fit enough at times to do it.

Sarge must be reading OER lol.

Quote
"We're looking great at the moment and there's a lot of rumours around that no-one's training harder than us at the moment. A lot of the boys are fitter then they've ever been and it's going to set them up for big years."

Which AFL club isn't saying this. The proof will come in a few months.

Tigers find gun forward in Schulz
11 March 2007   Herald-Sun
Ken Piesse

JAY Schulz can yet be the powerhouse forward Richmond needs to sample again September action, judging on his impressive form at Princes Park yesterday.

While the Tigers lost a low-key practice match in 30C heat to Melbourne, their third loss in three weeks, the form of Schulz and the returning Nathan Brown encourage hopes for an improved 2007.

Rather than being remembered as a footballer whose late-night indulgences were blamed for Richmond losing a key sponsorship, Schulz says he is ready to repay the loyalty of everyone at Tigerland with his best season.

"I'm in my fifth year now and want to show the boys and everyone that I am here for a reason," Schulz said.

"I can play and I have a lot to offer."

Schulz kicked only two goals in the 28-point loss, but his marking and athleticism would be an asset beside Matthew Richardson when the Tigers champion returns.

"We've worked well together in pre-season," he said.

"There's room for us to play together for sure."

Teammate Brown's 21 disposals show he will be a valuable player for the Tigers, having not played a senior game after Round 17 last season.

Coach Terry Wallace says he expects Brown to play all 22 games this year.

"There's no problem at all with him now," Wallace said.

What a terribble headline for a player who has played 1 decent game of football in his AFL career.
Would somebody please tell me what his average kicks per game are.
I think you might be able to add them up on one hand.

Average kicks per game?

Got to say Jack - the number of kicks are not that important - it's the quality of the kicks not the quantity.

And yesterday the impressive thing from where I was sitting was the 1% ers. E.g his tackling, blocking, sheperds and work rate in trying to keep the ball in our fwd 50.

yeah ... i agree ...

i like Jay ... but he has one match that looks good in and we are smiling for him ...

i know he has talent and it is this year he has to do something ... as a forward you need to mark, kick goals and put pressure on your opponents ... thats all ... not how many possessions you get ... he is the type of player that can have five kicks for five goals !

come on jay ... f*** play man ! your the future richmond forward !

I understand what your saying there WP although my impressions of a gun forward is one that can take contested marks and wins a game off his own boot Eg Wayne Carey, Matty Lloyd, Alistair Lynch, Fraser Gehrig, Brendan Fevola etc etc etc
Schultz is hardly a gun forward

Great post WP.

Jay's got the tools to be a gun.
Just needs to stay fit and be provided the opportunity.

I am a huge fan of this 21yr old who will soon enough be making waves for the Tigers.

So is Fev lol but that doesn't stop him kicking bags. I agree Jack though calling Sarge a gun forward yet is laughable. The only thing we can say is he is still relatively young and improving. It took Pagan arriving at Carlton before Fev got his act together on-field.

The thing Sarge needs the most is a injury-free run this year. Even yesterday he went off temporarily (thank god) with an ankle.

I hope he has a great year so we can trade him. Kruezer, Bellchambers, Cotchin, Morton and afew others will be quality players from this years draft.
