Jack Riewoldt requires four operations Mark Stevens

September 14, 2011 THE full extent of Jack Riewoldt's injury issues have been revealed, with the star forward needing an extraordinary four post-season operations.
A banged-up Riewoldt has already had hip surgery and will soon go under the knife for another hip clean-up on the other side.
Richmond also confirmed Riewoldt needed finger surgery and an operation on his left ankle.
To cap it, Riewoldt also played out the season with significant rib cartilage damage after a training collision with teammate David Gourdis.
Riewoldt wore a thin, plastic guard to protect his ribs in at least two games after Gourdis had accidentally crunched him on the Thursday before Richmond's Round 15 clash against Carlton.
But the left ankle injury proved particularly debilitating for Riewoldt, who lost much of his trademark leap this season.
"Being on the left, it was his jumping leg, which affected his ability to leap at the ball," Tigers head of football Craig Cameron said yesterday. "But Jack wouldn't want to see the injuries used as an excuse."
Riewoldt's hip problems are similar to those that ended young Geelong ruckman-forward Nathan Vardy's season early.
Riewoldt improved in the final six weeks as he learned to manage the injuries, but the output from last year's Coleman medallist was down. In 22 games this year, he kicked 62.26 and took 102 marks. Last season in 22 outings, he booted 78.30 and took 123 marks.
Riewoldt won the club best and fairest last year, but finished ninth in last night's Jack Dyer Medal count.
The post-season clean-ups are unlikely to drastically affect Riewoldt's preparations for next year.
At 22, Riewoldt has become one of the superstars of the game and is the Tigers' most important player.
