Tiger coach Damien Hardwick was particularly pleased that Riewoldt’s goal assists were well up on last season.  He was ranked No. 1 in this category at the Club, with 21, and was No. 4 for marks (102).

Jack Riewoldt requires four operations

    Mark Stevens
    From: Herald Sun
    September 14, 2011

THE full extent of Jack Riewoldt's injury issues have been revealed, with the star forward needing an extraordinary four post-season operations.

A banged-up Riewoldt has already had hip surgery and will soon go under the knife for another hip clean-up on the other side.

Richmond also confirmed Riewoldt needed finger surgery and an operation on his left ankle.

To cap it, Riewoldt also played out the season with significant rib cartilage damage after a training collision with teammate David Gourdis.

Riewoldt wore a thin, plastic guard to protect his ribs in at least two games after Gourdis had accidentally crunched him on the Thursday before Richmond's Round 15 clash against Carlton.

But the left ankle injury proved particularly debilitating for Riewoldt, who lost much of his trademark leap this season.

"Being on the left, it was his jumping leg, which affected his ability to leap at the ball," Tigers head of football Craig Cameron said yesterday. "But Jack wouldn't want to see the injuries used as an excuse."

Riewoldt's hip problems are similar to those that ended young Geelong ruckman-forward Nathan Vardy's season early.

Riewoldt improved in the final six weeks as he learned to manage the injuries, but the output from last year's Coleman medallist was down. In 22 games this year, he kicked 62.26 and took 102 marks. Last season in 22 outings, he booted 78.30 and took 123 marks.

Riewoldt won the club best and fairest last year, but finished ninth in last night's Jack Dyer Medal count.

The post-season clean-ups are unlikely to drastically affect Riewoldt's preparations for next year.

At 22, Riewoldt has become one of the superstars of the game and is the Tigers' most important player.

Tigers aiming to rebuild Riewoldt

    Greg Denham
    From: The Australian
    September 14, 2011

RICHMOND has finally revealed why its crack full-forward Jack Riewoldt's season tapered off midway through the year.

Riewoldt, last year's Coleman medallist with a personal-best 78 goals, will soon enter hospital for operations on both hips, his left ankle and a finger.

The Tigers yesterday said his ankle injury, which is understood to have aggravated his hip problems, had hampered him during the second half of the season.

which is supported by a decrease in his goal-kicking output.

Up to the end of round 12, which included 11 Richmond games, Riewoldt kicked 38 goals. His average of almost four goals a game included his zero-possession effort in round two against the Saints when he was concussed in the first quarter and forced off.

In the Tigers' 11 remaining games, Riewoldt booted just 24 goals to take his season's tally to 62, the same as Collingwood's Travis Cloke and nine less than the Coleman Medal winner, Hawthorn ace Lance Franklin.

In the first half of the season, Riewoldt kicked six goals against Carlton in the opening round and two other bags of five, against North Melbourne and Brisbane, but after the injury, his best individual efforts were two four-goal hauls.

He played 57 consecutive games and the only match in which he failed to kick a goal for the first time since round two last year was when he was knocked out early against the Saints.

He is expected to be available for the majority of the Tigers' pre-season training prior to Christmas.

Our season was over by round 15 as far as not being able to make the finals. So why did we continue to play him while injured rather than wrapping him in cotton wool for the rest of the season and putting him in for these surgeries at a earlier date so he would be definitely right by the start of the preseason in late Oct/early Nov  ???.

It was the walking wounded at the B&F last night

Would think there is close to 9-10 in the number of blokes needing or who have had surgery

And Jack was one of the ones who wasn't hobbling around last night  ;D

Where are all the bozos who came in here and attacked posters like me because we said Riewoldts season was over well before r24 and that he should be rested for the rest of the season so he can have a full preseason.

Now the truth comes out - 4 operations needed. If he'd gone in for surgery from the start of r16 or r17 he would have done a couple of operations already but nah ... lets keep our best players out on the field until their completely stuffed. Stupidity 100% stupidity from the RFC IMHO. Short sighted policys been exhibited once more. Very Very disappointing.

I can imagine what would of happened, as it was Jack was being accused of being lazy, selfish, petulant etc, but without him the floggings would of been relentless and we would had bonfires at puntroad hysterical screaming and such.

Yep Ramps it doesn't make sense. You don't mess around with your A-graders and keep them playing while injured when there's nothing but pride to play for. Jack should've been put into cotton wool in readiness for the 2012 preseason.

Totally agree - when a season is shot absolute no point in playing injured players, especially your best ones

granted Jack's problems aren't major but seriously you play 'em injured you run the risk of either making the existing injuries worse or landing a new one caused be over compensating for an existing one
