Not a criticism of Richo but we've often played better without him in the past.  I reckon we'll cope okay.

better team wothout a spoilt fool screaming for the ball and then screaming when he doesn't get it or drops the mark.

Doc Larkins said on MMM this afternoon that Richo only has a minor fracture in his eye socket and should only miss 1-2 weeks. Not as bad as initially thought.

Polo will need scans but they will wait and see how it fairs. He may be able to play the season out but if its no good he will need to have his shoulder done.

Maybe its better for him to get it done now and then set himself for next season.

I thought Richo had his eye taken out the way blood was piszing out of him. Showed great heart in wanting to come back on too. I've never been a fan, but one thing about the man, he has a huge ticker.

Unfortunately for us, he doesn't have a brain.

Richardson set for quick return

INITIAL fears that Richmond forward Matthew Richardson would be sidelined for eight weeks with an eye-socket fracture proved premature when scans yesterday showed the fracture would probably keep him out only for two weeks.

Richardson sustained several injuries to his face and skull in the final quarter of Friday night's loss to the Crows, when he was accidentally kicked by teammate Andrew Krakouer.

Richmond football operations manager Paul Armstrong said the collision could have sidelined Richardson for much longer but . now it appeared to be a hairline fracture that doesn't require surgery.

"He's also got a broken nose, which will require minor surgery, and 13 stitches in a gash near his eyebrow, so the prognosis is somewhere between two and three weeks."

Melbourne University associate professor in sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner said Richardson was very lucky.

"I'd say he got out of it pretty lightly, really. A hairline fracture to the eye socket is not too bad," he said. "Hairline means that it's not displaced, and the problem is if it is displaced, they have to put the bones back together again and it needs surgery and a plate."

Brukner said he saw no reason why Richardson should not be back on the field within three weeks.

He said the Tigers would want to take it easy on Richardson to ensure a smooth recovery and a quick return. "If he got another knock on the fracture, it might cause it to be displaced, so you want to wait a couple of weeks to make sure it's reasonably strong and solid," Brukner said.

Richardson's was not the only injury sustained by the Tigers in the tight final quarter against the Crows. Teammate Dean Polo dislocated a shoulder, but was back on the ground before the end of the game and is not expected to miss next week.

Armstrong said Richmond had not yet had the opportunity to gauge the extent of the injury. The same shoulder caused problems for Polo earlier in the season, and the club will be keeping a close eye on his recovery.

RICHMOND yesterday received an improved injury report on full-forward Matthew Richardson - then turned its attention to who of Jack Riewoldt, Cleve Hughes or Kent Kingsley would replace him.

It was feared Richardson might need surgery for a fractured eye socket and maybe even a broken cheekbone after being hit by a stray boot from teammate Andrew Krakouer in the Tigers' loss to Port Adelaide.

But yesterday, a specialist told him he would miss 3-4 weeks after receiving 13 stitches on a cut above the fractured eye socket, as well as a broken nose.

"It's just a small crack, so I don't need an operation," Richardson told Channel 7 yesterday. "I won't play this week, but once the swelling goes down, I should be able to get back quickly."

Richardson will miss a stretch of games that starts with the Dreamtime at the 'G game against Essendon, and the Tigers seem likely to reward young Tasmanian forward Jack Riewoldt, who kicked two goals for Coburg yesterday.

But developing centre half-forward Cleve Hughes (two goals), dropped last week, and former Cat Kent Kingsley (five goals) are other options.

The Tigers will also need to determine whether promising on-baller Dean Polo needs surgery on his dislocated shoulder, after it popped out on Friday night.

Coach Terry Wallace said post-match he was unsure whether Polo could play on with the injury.

"He's got one of those shoulders that slips in and slips out," Wallace said.

"The problem with that type of injury is that he'll probably be feeling OK again by Wednesday or Thursday. If it's causing him irreparable damage, he'll go in and have it done. I think it could work out either way."

Richardson has missed 20 games in five years, and encouragingly the Tigers have won nine of them.

Assistant coach David King said yesterday the club would in coming days consider whether it was time to play Riewoldt.

Tigers decide on Polo, Richo replacement

Richmond will decide this week whether to book young midfielder Dean Polo in for surgery after he suffered a second dislocated shoulder this AFL season.

Polo had his right shoulder pop out in a tackle in Friday night's loss to Adelaide but was able to return soon after and play the game out.

That sort of recovery would normally clear the 20-year-old to play Essendon on Saturday night, however the fact Polo also dislocated his shoulder in the pre-season indicates there could be a long-term problem.

Tigers coach Terry Wallace said Polo had the sort of joint which could pop out easily, however the Tigers will this week decide whether to address the problem through surgery.

That would rule the onballer out for at least a month.

"Hopefully he can continue playing but he will meet with a specialist who will tell him if he can keep playing with it," said Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong.

Richmond face another big decision this week, as Wallace must decide how best to replace Matthew Richardson, either in the forward line or in the ruck.

Richardson will miss at least two games after suffering a hairline fracture to his eye socket in a collision at AAMI Stadium.

Richardson, who also required 13 stitches to close a cut above his left eye, was actually lucky the injury was not significantly worse.

The Tigers must now decide who to replace Richardson with, ex-Geelong forward Kent Kingsley, youngster Cleve Hughes or the untried Jack Riewoldt all in the mix.

Kingsley booted five goals in the VFL while Riewoldt and Hughes both kicked two and are longer-term options.

Richardson's absence will also deny Richmond a rucking option, as Troy Simmonds, Trent Knobel and Ray Hall are all yet to return from injury.

The Tigers at least received some good news from the weekend, as defender Luke McGuane was cleared of a shoulder injury while playing in the VFL, after the Bellerive Oval goalpost snapped and fell on him.

Dr Brukner on SEN says Richo will miss 2 weeks and be back by round 11.

On Polo, Brukner said he has a loose lax shoulder. If he had a "normal" shoulder then popping it out could cause a fair bit of damage. Bit if it pops in and out all the time like Polo's shoulder does then you don't do much damage. He will need shoulder tightening and a reconstruction at sometime down the track. Up to the RFC if he has surgery now or we get him through the season and do it at the end of the year.

IMO given the year is a write off already they might as well do it now so he is ready to go for preseason training.

Dean Polo (Richmond) shoulder
Had problems with looseness in his right shoulder all year. Full dislocation on Friday night but may continue playing and delay surgery until the end of the season.
