HUTCHY HAS HIS SAY: Tigers should pounce on Riewoldt
RICHMOND must launch a fast, aggressive and lucrative bid to attempt to lure Saint Nick Riewoldt away from Moorabbin. And it must move now. The Saints' co-captain remains unsigned by the Saints, who are determined to do whatever it takes to re-sign him.
But the Tigers are morally bound to their supporters to launch a bid and make the Saints just a bit uncomfortable. Let's be honest here: if Richmond doesn't finish bottom then it will finish 15th at best.
It has massive bargaining power via the pre-season draft and it has major salary-cap space to make a big play. It has a marquee forward, Matthew Richardson, in the twilight of his career. It has Riewoldt's great friend, forward Nathan Brown, and his cousin, Jack Riewoldt.
And it has a recruiter, Greg Miller, who is renowned for bold recruiting stunts. Most of all, it owes its supporters one almighty attempt given the poor season. While Riewoldt has a great relationship and respect for Ross Lyon, there's no doubt the departure of Grant Thomas left the door just a tinge ajar for a rival recruiting bid. If only that the Thomas departure delayed negotiations due to the management reshuffle.
It is unthinkable to think Riewoldt and Nick Dal Santo are yet to be made formal offers despite the commencement of talks. And while the Saints have signalled now they mean business in re-signing both of their stars, rival clubs have the slightest of windows now — read, next four weeks — to make it so much tougher. The Tigers owe it to their fans to go down fighting, however tough the battle.
