RICHMOND forward Nathan Brown yesterday sailed through his latest comeback game, but has been warned by coach Terry Wallace he might still be three weeks away from AFL football.
Brown played about 50 minutes for the Coburg reserves at Preston City Oval and, starting deep in the forward line, kicked 2.1 from nine possessions and three marks.
He was rarely at top pace and looked a cut above the competition, but crucially pulled up pain-free in his leg after playing in four 12-minute spurts in the first half.
While Wallace was happy Brown had thrown himself into the game with gusto, he said his star might play up to 60 minutes next week before tackling a full VFL game.
That would put him on schedule for a Round 12 return against Melbourne in the second week of the split round.
Brown's demeanour after the game said as much as his performance.
After wearing the No. 82 jumper, he was happy to crack jokes about playing so early in the morning and his pleasure at not being king-hit by a trophy-hunting opponent.
"It's been about 10 months," he said of his return from complications with a leg first broken in 2005.
"I think Round 17 was my last proper game of football.
"It was good to get out there.
"I kicked a couple of goals and should have kicked another one.
"I was a bit nervous about how I would go and how my leg would pull up but it pulled up pretty well.
"It feels good. (Sometimes) I can tell when I start running there is an awful pain in there and it says to me I need to rest for a couple of weeks. But it felt good today and I have been full-on training for two weeks."
Wallace said: "The main thing was that you wanted to see that he was going to get himself in the contest. He was putting himself in situations where he was going to get tackled, and he was prepared to tackle."
Brown said: "I just want to have a good second half of the year. There is a lot of football left, and we need a good springboard to next year."
