Richmond coach unsure despite contract
July 24, 2007 - 4:10PM
The Age & Sportal

Terry Wallace has admitted that he may not get to complete his five-year contract as Richmond coach.

After posting respectable mid-table finishes in his first two years in charge, the Tigers have slumped to last spot on the ladder with just one victory and seem certain to claim the wooden spoon.

Wallace's position seems safe enough for now, with no suggestion that he will join Carlton's Denis Pagan, Fremantle's Chris Connolly and Melbourne's Neale Daniher on the outer this year.

But the situation could be markedly different in 12 months' time if the Tigers have not shown significant on-field improvement.

In the current unstable coaching climate, Wallace said he was not "twitchy" about his position and said he planned on fulfilling his part of the deal.

"I'm not getting twitchy but it's always disappointing when you see guys and you know and understand what they go through on a regular basis," Wallace said at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

"My promise was when I came here that we were going to re-align the footy club in relation to developing our own players for the future rather than trading them in from outside," Wallace said.

"That's the pathway that I've put in place and that's the pathway I'll continue to go down until I get a tap on the shoulder and (I'm told) `that's not your job to do any more'.

"All you can do is, you've made a pledge and you just stand by your pledge."

Wallace said he hoped the Richmond board would honour his contract which runs until the end of 2009, while adding "that's not always the case in football as we know".

"I think that all of us knows that our time comes and it comes and goes and from where I am situated I'm just getting on with my job," he said.

"I think it goes through waves. This was always going to be a fairly unusual year when we had so many coaches close to the end of contract or coming out of contract.

"There was probably a little bit more stability in the previous few years.

"Going through the history it's always gone in crests and waves.

"I suppose that's one of the reasons why this football club - it wasn't just me, it was this football club - decided when I first started that they wanted a long term contract so we could try to realign the club to where we wanted to go."

Wallace's 'pathway' is enduring a pear-shaped third season as the Tigers languish in last position with a solitary win and the Richmond coach is concerned that the season may peter out.

"Clearly the three sides down the bottom of the ladder performed really poorly on the weekend," Wallace said.

"Has their season come to an end? Have they thrown in the towel? It's absolutely fair to speculate that, we're pretty keen as a group [to ensure] that that's not the case."

Wallace said that while it appeared Richmond was down and out on the field, it was actually progressing.

"What we can re-assure them [Richmond fans] is that we're heading in a direction and we haven't changed from the direction we want to head," he said.

"Sometimes you look like you're going backwards at 100 miles an hour when you're actually marching forwards.

"Those who are privy to what we are trying to achieve internally are confident that we are going forward.

"Those on the outside probably see us that we're going backwards."

Meanwhile, Wallace believes the AFL should address the current system which sees clubs benefit from finishing in the lower reaches of the ladder, although the Tigers coach admits he isn't sure what can be done about it.

"When I was a young person watching games, ninth position was better than twelfth position and that was the way that it was back in those days," explained Wallace.

"It's not necessarily that way now and I don't know whether that's a great thing."

Tigers dismiss tank talk (RFC)

Tigers dismiss tank talk
4:53 PM Tue 24 July, 2007
By Catherine Murphy
richmondfc.com.au

TIGERS ruckman Troy Simmonds says he finds talk about his team tanking “offensive”.

“Every time you step out on to the field, it’s a competitive game and you want to win and that group of players (the Tigers) want to win every game,” Simmonds says.

“There’s no talk of tanking whatsoever. We’re coming up against some quality opposition (in the next few weeks) and I think it’s a great chance to show that if we’re coming up against the Sydneys and the Geelongs, West Coast over in Perth, and we come up with some good footy, it will certainly back up what I’m saying.”

Tigers’ coach Terry Wallace echoed Simmonds sentiments and said the current system of allocating draft picks should be changed.

“I’ve said before that the system at the moment isn’t the way I’d like to see it,” Wallace said.

“When I was a young person watching games, ninth position was better than 12th position and that was the way that it was back in those days. It’s certainly not that way now and I’m not sure that’s a great thing.”

:yep

If there's no tanking then why does everyone suggest there's a problem with the draft system.

Plough in the audio clip said he knew when he signed up that it would take a couple of years before the Club's finances would be in a position to help improve the footy department in terms of say another recruiting officer or assistant coach or development coach. They ask the players what they need.

Wallace also said as an example of our side moving forward, our young backline is very different to the experienced one we had last year which included oldies such as Gas, Chubba and Chaffey.

mate, whats the point.
Its quiet obvious that Terry is now uncertain where his career is.
He knows it wont go the 5 years.
At the end of the day, if the RFC was run like a business, he would of been out the door along with Pagan , Connelly and Daniher.
ONE win from 16 games is hardly good enough.
Unfortunately the RFC is a ""mates club"" with Gary March being too close to Wallace which in turn will bring around his downfall as well.
The will be no cowardly coup.
You might find he might have had enough

You might find he might have had enough

has he told you he has had enough? or are you just speculating

take this scenario

season 2008

tigers have a full and great preseason with no issues/injuries
players like snake and coghs are fit and firing from day 1
brown is fit and firing from day 1
polak really starts to dominate at chb
lids and tambling come into their own
jack and cleve improve out of site aka t cloke this yr
rfc win the games that they nearly won in 2007/should have won in 2007
we finish top 8

this can all happen, say it does

will terry coach his 5th yr? i think so

will u assume terry may have had enough? i think not

just remember, every yr, someone has to finish last or down teh bottom end, this yr, rfc & mfc both had disastrous starts due to injury, hardly either coaches fault

u just hate terry and its not half obvious

and about march and terry, its a good thing they get along, but march did not emply terry when terry started!

Lets see xXx
Lets start with Cogs, was offered for trade to Freo at the end last year BUT HE changed his mind and didnt want to go, FACT.   He has poor kicking skills, will never get back to the player he was.

Nathan Brown is 29 years old and has had a very serious injury, will never be the player he was unfortuneately, lucky to be playing now.

Polak has played like ""Jason Cloke"" for the past 10 weeks, lets see how he goes when he is made accountable

Lids. needs to be alot stronger at the ball, will be great player though
Tambling. I like Richie although he will struggle, has little confidence in his own ablilty thus his poor performances at times.

Can tell you Cleve will never be any where as good as Travis Cloke. Travis Cloke was a standout in his under 18 year.  Would have been easy first round if there wasnt the father and son rule.

As for hating Terry, no not all . Im my opinion he continually talks crap and people beleive him , good for you ,the people who beleive him.
I would think that Terry coaching has been ordinary at the best this year . He started off on thr wrong foot by training the guts out of players thus having a big injury list at the start of the year, his problem , he is the coach. Dont see Paul Roos having injuries before the first game, Oh yeah thats right,
Terry blamed the drought ::)

What Crazy has changed his mind?
The "Executive" have changed their mind?
After only yesterday when he said he wouldn't walk away from the deal he made, he's going to at the end of the year say I'm going?
What a tangled web of intrigue this year has been  ::)

I reckon he admitting that he mighten see out his 5 years is of great interest
