this draft for us will be about our priority pick selection and our 2nd round selection. Get these two correct and we will have had a good draft.

Don't be surprised if we don't pick up as many talls as supporters want.

Miller (and presumably Plough and the club as a whole) basically see modern footy heading towards where a side is made up of "18 midfielders with a big bloke at either end".

Greg also said that most young draftees these days take 4-5 years to come on and that you will hardly see any club getting rid of their younger players before this time.

So make of that what you will as far as a 3rd-year player like Meyer as concerned.

Food for thought for all supporters! - there is not much value in training the young fellows for other clubs to get the benefit of your labour

i believe we need tough midfielders ...

Cotchin seems to be our man ...

From what I've read, Cotchin is more of a Deledio type utility, not the tough midfielder you are after. Masten would be the better match for what you are looking for at this stage.
Miller reckons Cotchin can play in all positions for his size - inside mid, outside, HBF, midsize forward, etc. During the U18 champs Cotchin not only was carrying a shoulder injury but was also carrying some knee injury. Unless Melbourne tank in round 22 I would say Cotchin will be a Tiger come late November.

unless kreuzer is available Cotchin will be in the yellow and black  :shh

But imagine if we did get him, look at our midfield depth if they reach their full potential

Starting on ball --> Foley, Cotchin, Lids
Next rotation --> Connors, Blingers, Edwards
If need be --> Polo, Cogs

Rainesy will probably be thrown into the midfield mix as well.

hmm - how long we we have Ottens? 5 years? Or was it six?

Ottens was a champion after 3 years. We should have delisted him after his injury. Complete waste of time and money. Geelong should have paid us for his rehab.

Whilst I can see the way we are heading, we need to have a careful look at where the Bulldogs are at right now, it's a perfect example of being too light on for talls. We will be without Gaspar, Hall, Knobel, Kingsley, maybe Moore next year, we will need some replacements.

The focus needs to be on 3-4 years from now, we need to be planning ahead and drafting talls now so that they have plenty of time to develop. The way we have operated in the past is to only address the need once it is too late, that puts enourmous pressure on the players we draft. If we are drafting more talls now they can be given the time to develop. The other point is that we need enough talls on the list to ensure there is the competition for places. We can't have players getting free games simply because they're > 190cm tall.

Agree with everything you've said jezza. The problem for us is the best kids in this draft seem to be ruckmen and midfielders. Not too many KPPs. Maybe if we're lucky a Rance, Pears or another young KPP will still be around at pick 18/19. Next year's draft we'll have to find some more talls with Hurley the standout at this point in time. Miller of course will try to fill holes during trade week.

Certainly early on in the draft the focus will be on rucks and midfielders, but there's always talls there late, even rookie list, we just need to ensure we are taking some every year, then we can given them time to develop, make sure there is competition for places, and have the luxury to cut those that don't make it, rather than have to keep them on year after year because we don't have better options. We'll be bringing in probably 8 or so new players to the club next year, no excuses not to bring in any.

True jezza.

I think you've hit the nail on the head about us taking young KPPs as rookies as well as in the draft. That was the only thing I was really disappointed with our drafting last year. Not rookieing a young tall.

Yep. Unless we have plenty on the main list of any one type, I think we should pretty much always have 1 ruck, 1 KPP, 1 rover, and one wingman/flanker on the rookie list.
