Tigers face ruck shortage

Richmond's joy at winning only its second game of the 2007 AFL season on Friday night has proven to be short-lived with the Tigers facing a severe ruck shortage for this week's daunting trip to Perth to take on reigning premiers West Coast.

The Tigers have lost young ruckman Angus Graham for the rest of the season with a fractured right ankle while number one ruckman Troy Simmonds is no certainty to return from a mystery virus that caused his hospitalisation last week.

And with Trent Knobel having been out all season with an ankle season, the Tigers could be solely reliant on youngster Adam Pattison against arguably the AFL's best big man in Dean Cox and his more than handy back-up Mark Seaby.

Graham injured his ankle during Friday night's win over Collingwood, in what was only his second AFL game, and will have surgery this week.

Meanwhile Simmonds will still be unavailable to train in the early part of this week as he continues his recovery making it unlikely he will have recovered sufficiently to make the long trip west this week.

How many broken bones can one club have!  :banghead That's 3 ruckmen with broken ankles in the one season  :help.

Let's hope Gus doesn't have the same probs as the other two. The worst thing for Gus is he now misses playing finals with Coburg. Coburg will miss him too  :-\.

Ruck woes deepen for Tigers in the AFL
The Age
August 14, 2007 - 3:29PM

Graham had surgery on a broken bone in his ankle on Monday.

The Tigers revealed the rookie-listed ruckman bravely played through his side's win over Collingwood last Friday night with the injury, sustained in the opening two minutes of the match.

Hickey said Graham knew he had broken his ankle when he sustained his injury, but decided to play on.

Wallace praised the 20-year-old's courage to continue playing on Friday night and give much-needed assistance to Pattison in the ruck against the Magpies.

"I thought it was an outstanding effort for a young boy trying to learn his way in the game, to play with that sort of pain and gives us enough of a contest to give Adam Pattison a bit of a breather," Wallace said.
