Tiger's charge too late
By Nick Bowen
 Tue 25 Sep, 2012

PAST and present Richmond players at Monday night's Brownlow Medal count could not help but ponder what might have been if equal second place-getter Trent Cotchin had not left his run so late.

Despite heading into this year's count as one of the strong favourites, Cotchin did not poll a vote until his three-vote, 27-possession game in round seven against the Sydney Swans.

When eventual winner Jobe Watson stretched his tally to 29 votes in round 19, Cotchin's chances of winning were already over as he trailed by 14 votes with just four rounds to go.

However, the 22-year-old Richmond midfielder flew home in those games to poll 11 of a possible 12 votes to join former Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell as joint runner-up on 26 votes, four behind Essendon skipper Watson.

First-year Tiger Brandon Ellis and Richmond great Kevin Bartlett both lamented Cotchin's slow start.

"We knew he was going to finish pretty strong. I thought if he was in the top five with five rounds to go he was actually going to win it," Ellis told AFL.com.au.

"But not getting a vote until round seven really hurt him. If he had polled before then he would have come home with the bacon."

Bartlett said: "He just missed out I suppose in those first half dozen games of the season."

"He had a fantastic last four games and a wonderful season and he polled marvellously well."

Veteran Richmond midfielder Shane Tuck could not speak highly enough of Cotchin as a person, footballer and leader.

"I've known Trent since he's been at the club. I've seen him grow as a player and it's hard to come across a more genuine human being than Trent Cotchin," Tuck said.

"I've become good friends with him over the last four years and I'm really proud and happy for him.

"And I just think that to come second in the Brownlow when he's only 22 is a great accomplishment and I look forward to him leading the club in the future."

Cotchin early Brownlow favourite
Paul Gough, Betting Editor

Richmond young gun Trent Cotchin is the early favourite to win next year's Brownlow Medal but despite the Tigers also containing the AFL's reigning Coleman Medalist in Jack Riewoldt, punters believe the club will yet again miss the top eight in season 2013.

... while the Tigers are again tipped to miss the top eight, 22-year-old Cotchin will start 2013 as the man to beat in the Brownlow after finishing runner-up to Essendon's Jobe Watson this year.

Cotchin is the $10.50 Brownlow favourite at Betfair with Gold Coast's Gary Ablett - who won in 2009 with Geelong - second pick at $12.50 ahead of this year's winner Watson at $14.50, along with Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield.

However at sportsbet.com.au - Cotchin, Ablett and Watson are all $8 equal favourites to win next year's Brownlow ahead of Collingwood pair Scott Pendlebury and 2011 winner Dane Swan at $11.

The Herald-Sun loves Cotch though ...

2012 will be remembered as the year two footballers came of age - Cotchin and Hawkins.

Richmond star Trent Cotchin, long-touted as the next gun midfielder, arrived at that destination. The silky game-breaker won the AFL coaches award, was equal-second in the Brownlow and was Tigers club champion.

The scary part is that i think he has loads of improvement left in him.I noticed towards the latter part of the year when he was resting forward ,he was backing himself, attempting to take screamers. My prediction is that cotch will take mark of the year in the not too distant future

So true. He is only one player but if the Tiges can't win a flag with Trent at the heart of this team, one wonders if we ever will again.

The rise and rise of Trent Cotchin

By Tony Greenberg

After a breakout season of league football in 2011, culminating in Trent Cotchin capturing his inaugural Jack Dyer Medal, the young midfield star took his game to an even higher level in 2012.

Cotchin did it in a manner befitting a player of his all-round class, racking up career-best numbers, maintaining an excellent degree of consistency throughout, and reaching truly breathtaking heights at times, with his vast array of football skills thrilling the Tiger Army.

The 22-year-old managed to play all 22 games, for the second season in-a-row, averaging 27.6 disposals per match. He had 20 disposals or more five times, 25 or more on nine occasions, and 30 or more seven times (four of those coming in the final four home-and-away rounds).
