Adelaide forward Taylor Walker has narrowly escaped a sanction for questioning the match review officer’s decision to fine Trent Cotchin for kicking when he claimed he would have been likely to receive a greater penalty for the same action.

Walker was speaking on his regular spot on breakfast radio on Triple M with hosts Mark Ricciuto, a Crows’ board member, and Chris Dittmar, when they began discussing the round five incident that led to Cotchin being charged for kicking Walker.

He described Cotchin’s act as deliberate before going on to say: “I tell you what, if the shoe was on the other foot I would have been missing the next month.”

The AFL took a dim view of his comments which, although delivered in a light-hearted fashion, with the AFL contacting Adelaide CEO Tim Silvers to ensure the club understood Walker’s remark fell just short of a sanction.

The league provided The Age with a statement indicating the action taken:

“The AFL has spoken to Adelaide today and reminded the club and the player of their obligations in relation to the match review process.”

Cotchin had told Channel 7 he pushed his leg out as he fell on his back when the ball went out of bounds to protect himself although the AFL match review officer found his action intentional. He was fined as it was categorised as low-impact and body contact, which only incurs a financial sanction.

Walker has been in fine form in his two matches back after being suspended for six games at the end of last year as part of a raft of penalties for racially vilifying a player at a SANFL match in July 2021. He went through a conciliation process and apologised for his remark.

He has kicked nine goals and provided leadership inside the forward 50.

You don't lose your footy smarts as you get older. It was those little moments that were so crucial from Cotch today. His vision and execution in and out of traffic was brilliant. Just kept finding and hitting teammates out in space that set up goals. Even the goal he kicked himself was clever too. Didn't overkick the footy and slotted it home.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick paid a glowing tribute to Cotchin during his post-match press conference.

“It was an unbelievable act, and it probably sums him up really. He was always going to go,” Hardwick said.

“People can look at kicks, marks and handballs, but you look at things like that, it’s what makes him the great player he is . . .

“It was a very solid hit. He did want to finish the game and contribute as well.”

Cotchin again was one of the Tigers’ best in last Friday night match, with a team-high 26 disposals, team-high 13 contested possessions, an equal team-high six clearances, four inside-50s, four tackles, two goal assists and seven score involvements.

"There was an incident near the goal square where Trent had to try and lay a tackle, and he ended up coming off quite sore through his clavicle, the bone through the chest. He's had some scans and it's showed he has a little crack in there which needs surgical repair and a plate put in there. So, he's having that done in the next day or so. He'll miss this week and we'll reassess beyond this week as to what that means. It's a little bit unfortunate, but we'll get him back as soon as we can."

Collingwood legend Mick McGuane believes Trent Cotchin's AFL career is approaching the end of the road and has urged Richmond to move on from their star.

The former Tigers skipper won three premierships with Richmond in four years, before relinquishing the captaincy after eight seasons at the end of the 2021 season.

Cotchin turned 32 in April and is one of seven Tigers stalwarts on the wrong side of 30, along with Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards.

McGuane believes Cotchin is not quite the dominant player he once was and persisting with him could hinder the progression of some of the talented youngsters the Tigers have in their ranks.

'As a three-time premiership captain, Trent Cotchin is a revered person at Punt Rd and has still played some reasonable football this season,' he wrote in his column on the Herald Sun.

'However, it looks like we are watching the last few months of his decorated career.

'The Tigers need to move on and give some of their younger midfielders some more midfield minutes, with a large crop of players having been starved of opportunity in recent years.'

Cotchin has played 280 games for the Tigers since he was selected with the second overall pick of the 2007 national draft and was the Brownlow Medallist in 2012, earning his only All-Australian nomination in the same year.

A three-time Richmond's best-and-fairest, the star midfielder was an instrumental figure of the Tigers team that ended a 37-year drought-breaking premiership in 2017 and then triumphed again in 2019 and 2020.

Cotchin averages 21.7 disposals, 10.4. kicks and 2.7 marks per game this season, with all three figures below his career average.

McGuane added that while Martin and Riewoldt show no sign of slowing down with age, Edwards should also be phased out by the Tigers.

'Shane Edwards has fought back from a slow start to the season but it would also be right to call time on his illustrious career at almost 34 years of age,' he wrote.
