December 26, 2011 10:53AMIndian batsman Rahul Dravid with Richmond vice-captain Trent Cotchin at Punt Rd. Herald SunWITH batting maestro Rahul Dravid on board, Richmond is hoping to tap into India's large supporter base as part of its broader plans to take AFL to the subcontinent in the coming years.
Dravid is a patron for the new Richmond supporter group, the Indian Tigers, which the club believes is an important first step in getting the Indian community involved in the AFL.
"Sport brings people together, I have seen that all over the world. It's great that Richmond is connecting with the Indian community," Dravid said.
"I like the idea of the Indian Tigers supporter group - it will give Indians another team and another sport to follow.
"I have watched some games on television - it is fast and very physical. It would be great to see a game played in India."
The Indian supporter group will receive free ticket offers and clinics for young fans, while the club also plans to have a dedicated match day next season.
Richmond has already taken some steps to forging a relationship with the Indian community.
Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale hoped the supporter group would forge a link. "It is fantastic to have someone of Rahul Dravid's standing support what we are trying to do with the Indian community," Gale said.
"We started to engage more significantly this year - hosting the Indian team during the International Cup and having a presence at the Diwali Festival."
The Tigers hope to play an exhibition game in India and have started investigating facilities.
