Hardwick backs in Rance comeback, except it’s in the ‘wrong sash’Damien Ractliffe

July 23, 2021 — 12.29pmRichmond coach Damien Hardwick joked he would have preferred Alex Rance’s comeback would be “in our colours” ahead of the premiership defender’s return to football with Essendon’s VFL side this weekend.
Rance, 31, hasn’t played since he tore his ACL against Carlton in the 2019 season-opener, but was named to play for the Bombers as a top-up player when they face Southport on Sunday.
“Wrong sash Alex! what’s he doing?” Hardwick, who won a premiership in 2000 as a player at Essendon, quipped at his press conference on Friday.
“Alex is a guy that just loves playing the game.
“He’ll probably enjoy the game, it will be interesting to see how he goes – he hasn’t played for an extended period, but he’s one of the greatest players I’ve ever seen play the game so hopefully he goes okay.
“I’d just prefer it was in our colours, not so much Essendon’s.”
Hardwick said he hadn’t chatted to Rance for some time, but added if Rance wanted to make a comeback he would back in the five-time All-Australian.
“He’s one of the more athletically gifted players I have ever seen play the game so if there was ever a person going to come back after a three-year lay-off, it might be Alex, I’m not too sure,” Hardwick said.
“What his mindset is, it is challenging. Has he had some time to freshen up? Once again I’m not too sure, but I’ll back Alex in whichever way he goes, to be honest.
“He’s such an incredible player to play the game and I think we’d all agree that he did retire early, but we understand his reasonings behind that. If he came back to the game it would be a good thing, the game would be better for it.
“The challenge is set for him, we’ll see how he goes on the weekend and how it transpires from there.”
