I'd give it all back.... Hypothetical
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:05:35 PM »
Saw this on bomberblitz. Which would you honestly choose?

------------------------
It's an often used cliche by a lot of players when they achieve an individual milestone that they would give it all up just to win a premiership medal. It occurs to me that is an incredibly easy thing to say when it is impossible to 'give back' the 300 games you've played or the Brownlow you just won. The question i have is, if a 17 yo kid gets drafted and you give him a choice of:

a) play ONE year ONLY of AFL and play in the premiership team. Then your career is finished.

OR

b) play 14 years, 300 games, Brownlow medal, 3 club best and fairest, career earnings $7+million plus lucrative sponsorships, post AFL career in media, but NO PREMIERSHIP.

Which would you honestly choose?

A 300 game player would be a good player, so 15 years at $500,000 or thereabouts - yep, no brainer.

B, The desire and the capacity to play the game itself at the highest level is the basic on the chain.

Could a player give up three best and fairests in exchange for 1 premiership season and STILL play for 15 years, yes I believe he could, but take the 15 years of playing time out then B has to be your answer.

Nathan Ablett obviously chose option A although he had 3 years or whatever it was. Buckley took option B  :shh lol.

Option B would set up for life financially but you play footy to reach the summit and win a premiership so I'll be stupid and go for A.

B ... can someone find out all 300 match players that have or haven't played in a premiership ???

off the top of my head ... Robert Havery, Paul Roos ... No Premierships ...

my point if i am correct is that when you play more then 300 matches ... the chances are you play in a premiership ...

if i am wrong ... my guess was wrong and the Hypothetical is a good one !!! he he !!!

Barry Round was another.

I'll go for option A.
I'd go to bed every night knowing I'd reached the footballing nirvana that champions like Skilton were cruelly denied.
I would be sleeping in a much smaller and less comfortable bed because I didn't pick B though ;D

For 7 million + in earnings it would have to be B ;D
