Players' mark of respect for Rite of Passage
Natalie Tkaczuk Sikora
June 12, 2008

RICHMOND captain Kane Johnson's earliest football memories were with his dad watching the Tigers claw their way around the MCG.

But it's his mum Jeanette's constant support through good times and bad that he credits with actually getting him on the MCG.

"My mum drove me everywhere as a kid and was the reason I got to play on the G in the first place," Johnson said yesterday.

"To have your mum support you through your whole career means a lot, I wouldn't have got the opportunity to be in this game if mum hadn't been there for me."

But for Jeanette Johnson just being there to back her son's dream to play the game was all the drive she needed.

"As a parent you've got to keep the tradition of footy alive," she said.

The Herald Sun and the MCG are offering 550 children and their parent or guardian the chance to take part in the Rite of Passage. On June 28 the MCG is honouring the tradition of parents and grandparents introducing their kids to Australia's most important sporting stadium to watch Richmond take on Carlton.

The offer includes a free child's entry to the game (with a paying adult), child-sized football, the chance to have a kick-to-kick on the MCG before the game, an MCG show bag full of goodies and the chance to meet AFL players.

To be part of the action, parents and guardians must register their details on the MCG website. Registration is open from 9am until midnight on June 12, 2008.

If the Cheats beat the Bummers tomorrow will be a huge crowd for the mini elimination final next week and even if they don't I still believe there will be a crowd of 80000 at least especially now that our season has a pulse that is actually beating hard. :thumbsup  :gotigers

The team has done the right thing by the club to set up this game. It's going to be massive. It's the only game in Melbourne on the Saturday and with it being a split round and a few Vic clubs playing interstate we may get a few neutrals along too to bump up the crowd even more.

No excuses now. Be there!  :gotigers

Fevs has kicked 15 in his last 2 games. Keep Fev down and we will win. Hopefully Thursty comes back in to strengthen our backline.

That jumper is horrible.

Fair enough we wore that jumper 100 years ago, but for the vast mojority of that time, including all of our successes, we've worn a yellow sash. Seems cheap to wear this striped jumper.

the should have made a jumper with a much skinnier yellow sash even a 1/4 the size of the current sash and put the centenary logo on the front. that may have been quite a good jumper.

I bet that the AFL would approve it as an away strip against the Hawks. After all, many years ago they approved the Hawks to play an away game against us in yellow shorts, when we had yellow shorts as our home colour.

I agree Jake, not that long ago people were wearing blue safari suits, flaired trousers and platform shoes. Just becasue they were worn in the past, doen't mean they have to be revived so we can relive the horror. I say keep the traditional sash. after all its the only season proper jumper I've ever known. For a bit of nostalgia, I wouldn't mind seeing a few of the players wearing the old yellow and black adidas footy boots!  :thumbsup

i neither like or dislike this jumper. if anything its great we're respecting our past by wearing our original colours.

forget that it looks like hawks or doesnt look right, just be proud people, be proud!

I don't mind the jumper as a one off. As long as we win that's all that matters  :thumbsup.
