The Burgers faced up against Geelong on Saturday and had the privilege of playing on the MCG. Unfortunately the weather didn’t play its part as it rained on and off throughout the match. It was the first time this season playing wet weather footy, and similar to round one when the two sides took on each other the Burgers came out on top in flying colours.
The match was the curtain raiser for the Geelong-Richmond AFL match, and by the end of the game quite a largish crowd had gradually gathered. Had it not been for the miserable weather an extra couple of thousand would have been in earlier to see last years Grand Finalists slug it out.
As expected on such a cold, miserable day the scores were lower than average. And the first quarter provided only one goal apiece. Andrew Collins strives in the wet conditions and made the most of it on Saturday slotting through three creative majors for the match, the most of any player.
¼ Time: Coburg 1.4 (10) Geelong 1.4 (10)Greg Tivendale didn’t lose any of his skill in the wet and continued on his great form for the year with another fine display through the middle. Tristan Cartledge helped give the Coburg midfield first use, but with such a slippery ball it was pretty scrappy out of the middle. Paul Shelton was as hard as ever and was often found picking himself up form the bottom of a soggy pack, his ball use was also better than most.
½ Time: Coburg 4.11 (35) Geelong 3.7 (25)Jarrod Silvester’s last month of footy has been top class, and again this week he controlled what happened in the backline. Along with Andrew Horne, the two cut off many Geelong forward surges and followed it up by clearing the ball from the defensive fifty. Kayne Pettifer was also classy in the wet gathering many possessions through the Burgers half forward line, but with six shots on goal only 2 made it through the big sticks. Coburg kicked 3 majors and kept Geelong goalless in the third, although both teams struggled in the conditions kicked 13 behinds between them for the term.
¾ Time: Coburg 7.18 (60) Geelong 3.13 (31)The Burgers 29 point lead at ¾ time was more like a 45 point margin in the wet conditions, and to put the result beyond doubt the Tigers added another 4 goals in the final term.
Coburg were the harder and more disciplined team on the day, and deserved the win. There were a lot of sore bodies after the game, but the Burgers third win from as many games softened the pain. This week Coburg return at home on Sunday at 2.00pm against the Bendigo Bombers.

Cam Howat and Glen Carrick were the best for the Burgers, whilst speedster Damien Rayson also collected plenty of the ball.
