Foley and Newman to share captain’s duties

CHRIS Newman and Nathan Foley will co-captain Richmond in this week’s match against Adelaide after Kane Johnson was ruled out.

Johnson is expected to be sidelined for up to four weeks with a strained medial ligament from Sunday’s loss to the Sydney Swans.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said the captain’s absence gave the chance for his deputies to show their worth as leaders.

“We won’t differentiate between either Newy or Nathan,” Wallace said.

“It is a great opportunity for those guys. Others aspiring to leadership roles [will have] to take up a bit of slack. Kane’s been good in that area of driving the boys forward.”

But Wallace said the caretaker captaincy was not necessarily an audition for Johnson’s eventual successor.

“Who knows where your next captain comes from? We’ve got a leadership group in place and they’re running it well.

“We’ve picked two vice-captains for a reason so those two blokes will lead the side on the weekend.”

Looks like some one with brains has hit the floor at Richmond for once. I was gunna pick against us this week but now with this info I will be going for us. Even if we do lose it will be a fairer fight. A bloody good desision has just been made.

It will be an audition if we win a few games in the next couple of weeks.

cant wait till sugar goes. since he arrived its no coincidence we have gone from bad to worse.

goodbye and good luck to newy and foley.

newy had a few bad games early this year but he has certainly the corner.
his courageous acts is what a leader should possess and is something our current captain wouldn't know how to spell.

lol @ bagging suger. He was a 1/2 decent footballer at Adelaide when he was 4th string midfeilder.

Its not his fault he was traded (for top 2 pick :( ) to a crap team.

However, lets be frank. Him getting injuryed is not a bad thing in terms of our long term future IMO.

true true.
look we have gone backwards under his reign lets be honest.
your right its not his fault he got traded to a crap team but its time for some tough decisions.
we need to take some chances as a football club like release him at season's end and instill one of the above 2 immediately.

Make a decision Wallace - either one or the other !

My personal preference would be Foley because he has developed his game further than any other player on the RFC list and has set the standard over the past 30 games.  Reward him !!

Foley

I think we have a winner for the most unneccessary post of 2008.

Who would've thought that WP would go for Foley instead of Newman!!!  :o

For mine I think sharing is a good option for a 4-5 week vacancy.

Just to clarify...

Actually I didn't get time to finsh the post as we had to rush one of the dogs to the hospital last night.

Clicked on post, shut odwn the computer and left, didn't get home until after 10.00pm but I digrese

What I was going to say was.....

Foley for mine simple because he seems to embraced the leader role he nows has and doesn't seem to be burdened with it. At times Newman seems to try to hard to be a good leader and makes some gaffs  :thumbsup

Not a very good audition first up although Newy was good in parts. No one stood up when we needed someone to make a stand and we can't blame Sugar for yesterday.

both are not leadership material

it is time the tigers thought outside the square and picked a young kid that oozes confidence and class

i will get blasted for saying this but jack riewoldt and connors should be our next captain and vice captain. during this time develop cotchin to be a future captain

we need extraverted confident people who can do thos special match winning inspirational things that lift the the team.

i know that we lost v the saints, but that last mark that jack took was all leadership and class. next time he will kick that goal!
DELEDIO FOR CAPTAIN ASAP!

doubt that very much but carlton if anyone.

sometimes big decisions need to be made.

the blues feel they have all positions covered except a player like newman.

would they give up a top 10 pick, i think they would.

guess who is newman's best mate.. fev!!

Some so called better players must have their names put on the trade table for an early draft pick within the first 3 rounds. If Newy has to go then so be it.
